Adobe Stock / Re: Subscription and extended licence?
« on: July 12, 2009, 03:56 »
I've never an EL on fotolia, probably the only site in the top 8 that I havent and I get a 2-3 per month on SS

I've never had an EL on SS, but have had a half dozen or so on Fotolia!

Perhaps some of what we see is just random fluctuation.

Shutterstock.com / Can I reactivate a deleted file?
« on: June 03, 2009, 11:57 »
Hi all

I deleted a photo on SS, but I now want to put it back in my portfolio.

Can I do that somehow, or do I have to re-submit it with a note to the reviewer?

Thanks

Hi all

I deactivated a file on IS, but I now want to reactivate it again and put it back in my portfolio.

Can I do that, or do I have to re-submit it?

Thanks

The six with no reason were good enough to be accepted.

So you're almost there  :)

Although note that the next reviewer may not definitely agree with the first that they were OK.

The technique is to upload images to all sites, then regularly visit FT to see what your best sellers are. You then compare the potential exclusive income of each best-selling FT image to the income it is currently generating from all sites. If FT comes out ahead you remove the image from all agencies and change it to be exclusive at FT.

This is broadly what I do - I have a lot of exclusive images on Fotolia from my early days, but nowadays I upload to various sites then go back and make a photo exclusive if either
- only Fotolia accepts it, or
- it sells more on Fotolia than all the others combined

So far only 1 image has outsold enough to delete it from the other agencies, but that one makes tons more on Fotolia and it's well worth it.

Exclusivity on Fotolia is a very difficult balance.

If you made all your photos exclusive, then opted out of subscriptions, it is true that you would not have to sell your work for 0.31c

However, it doesn't mean that you would get $2 for them.  The customer may just buy someone else's for 0.31 instead.  It could reduce your earnings!

However, I generally adopt a rule that if an image sells really well at Fotolia I delete it from other sites and have it exclusive on Fotolia (perhaps at 2 credits but sometimes just at 1).  For images with more sales on Fotolia than all other sites put together it makes business sense to make them exclusive.

Most images I now put up as non-exclusive initially, then  see how they go.

I only have around 180 images up, so I can't bring myself to delete any!  That said, 20-30 have never sold and are never likely to so I would be neither surprised nor disappointed if Fotolia deletes them one day.

In fact, they said they would delete ones with no sales after 18 months, but they don't seem to do it.

Hi Peter,

Yep, you need 4 subs ( it was three till last week, I think ) to equal one sale towards your sales count. So if you only sold subs you would have to sell 100,000 subs to become Emerald.

Best,
AVAVA

It has always been 4 to 1 - just not very well publicised

Looking like a very, very poor month developing - the worst of my 6 months on istock if this keeps up >:(

Shutterstock.com / I'm in!!! So - any advice for a newbie?
« on: October 05, 2008, 13:15 »
On my third attempt - after 0/10 and 4/10 I'm in with 8/10  :)

So can anyone give an SS newbie (but with FT and IS experience) some advice?

My reading of these boards is that at SS you benefit from regular drip feed uploads, but other than that I don't know any tips.

For example, FT basically doesn't take landscapes and IS is very picky over isolations.  What is accepted easily and what sells well at SS?

Also, one of the 2 rejections I had on entry was one of the 4 they said was OK on the previous try!!!  Obviously editors are only human and opinions vary etc etc but is it worth giving this image another go, since it was "accepted" once, or is that really frowned upon?

Anyway, many thanks in advance for any ideas.

My acceptance rate there is much lower than it was.  I was around 45% but now more like 25%.

For landscapes of any sort it is basically zero.

IS on the other hand seem to take most of what Fotolia rejects!

I don't know why the OP was surprised, as people are always complaining about istock moving the goalposts.

lol - although the issue of keywords is a serious one, this topic deserved a goalposts pun!

I wouldn't get too worried - firstly, it's only speculation.  And secondly, those gangs would surely be better to spend their time working on their own images, rather than clicking aimlessly on the remaining 4 million???
