General Stock Discussion / Re: getty ESP royalties update delay
« on: September 16, 2017, 08:30 »
On or before the 20th of September, the August Getty reports will get published. It has always been that way as long as I have been a contributor. iStock just recently moved to the same schedule/system.

It's not the 20th and there they are. All my contracts and earnings for months.
Are you looking at Getty or iStock ESP? Getty info has been available on ESP forever. Nothing for iStock yet (at least for me).

Off Topic / Re: antivirus reccomendations
« on: December 15, 2015, 08:43 »
Never used an antivirus. I use a computer since 1982 and I never get a virus.
The best antivirus is to not install nothing you are not sure and don't open any mail you cannot 100% trust.

That is very risky. When using Google image search, I have been led occasionally to sites that dump viruses/malware. Norton has warned me not to go there. Absent those Norton warnings I would have been vulnerable.

Getty now requires drone pilot license and permits for any drone footage...
What happens if you don't have the appropriate documents? Could the FAA fine Getty? The UAV operator?
Google FAA drone fines. There are reports of fines up to $10,000. In one case they deemed posting a drone video on YouTube commercial use because of an ad linked to the video. In another case selling stock images of cityscapes was deemed commercial and a heavy fine was assessed.

5
In the U.S. Getty now requires proof of an exemption granted by the FAA for your commercial use of a drone.

6
An example of what I meant is if you placed equipment in a place where it was a tripping hazard and someone was injured you could be personally liable.   The LLC may protect you personally from copyright claims if the LLC owns the disputed image and is registered as the owner with agencies selling it.
ETA: I may have misread your statement that forming an LLC places all potential liability on the LLC. If limited to copyright or contract issues I don't disagree.

7

In case you wonder, yes, it places all potential liability on only the assets of the LLC.
Forming an LLC does not shield you from liability for your personal negligence that causes harm to someone.

They could and still do use regular channels but I think they must view this another use of current technology.  It sure grabs my attention when I get a push notification on my phone that Getty is looking for a certain type of image. I just don't go to their normal "needs lists" very often. Also, a lot of their requests are time limited, e.g. Mardi Gras or Carnival images.

9
The editorial requests have been for both hot news and more general topics. For example, there was a request for photos of flooding in the U.K. during recent storms.   A more general "unhot" editorial example is the request for unreleased photos of U.S. suburban homes. They are being classified as editorial.

10
I don't know that Getty is requiring a higher level of quality for images submitted to Moment that are produced on a DSLR than those produced  with an iPhone.

11
Submissions are made to very specific topics to fill editorial and creative needs in those areas so it really doesn't matter what kind of device is used. That's only my guess as to the thinking behind "Moment" (I may be wrong.)  In other words, the emphasis is on filling current needs and not on the equipment used.  I think this may be a significant part of the future of stock and editorial photography.   For example, if there's a significant storm somewhere send out a request for photos to the large number of photographers you have enrolled in Moment and you are bound to get some excellent photos. In fact, that's what happened with the last large snow storm in the Northeast U.S.

Download photos to the iPhone's camera roll and then use the APP to upload. I originally thought they were only taking photos shot on the iPhone. After reviewing some accepted photos it became obvious to me they weren't shot with a telephone. I have since had images accepted that were shot with a DSLR.

But presumably from what you've said, you'd still need an iPhone.
I have no intention to go out and buy an iPhone when I haven't even finished paying for my Samsung yet and am in a contract until November!
I have uploaded using both an iPhone and an iPad

"OTOH, how many of us would rush to join a totally unjuried stock agency?"
Great rhetorical question!  Certainly not me.

I think it's an easy bet that additional instruction/information will not be free.

I agree.  If they are as successful as I suspect they will be, it will benefit many of us who don't become members.

Nikon / Re: Nikon D800 36MP coming?
« on: February 07, 2012, 08:08 »
Nikon's site warns of moire without an AA filter on the D800 and shows examples of moire generated with a D800 without an AA filter. Problem seems to be significant enough that they are shipping a new version of Capture NX with a moire reduction tool.  I don't want to have to search for moire in every image I generate and then have to spend the time processing in, so it will be D800 with AA filter for me.  Here's a link to the Nikon examples:  http://imaging.nikon.com/lineup/dslr/d800/features01.htm
