DepositPhotos / Re: Keyword sorting on Deposit Photos
« on: August 22, 2010, 10:59 »
Agree...  It's really annoyin when we have to do that.. I too have often wondered just how much impact the sort order really has for the search engines.. ?

It would be nice to hear what the site reprsentative can say about that..  Depositphotos is a nice site to upload images at, but this tiny detail is some-what annoying  8)

Hi Linda,

That sounds good...

I have an additional small question for you...  Have you taken over a bunch of editors from Crestock?  The reason I'm asking is that I have recently had a bunch of rejections for "poor editing" !  Basically that's fine, but all upoloaded images are in fact approved by editors on several top and mid tier agencies... And selling as well...

Thanks

Off Topic / Re: Anyone else ever get an email like this?
« on: August 09, 2010, 13:45 »
This is a scam!!!  That type of emails always are!

Check this out!

http://alojedaphotography.wordpress.com/2010/08/09/photographers-be-aware-of-e-scams/

This scenario comes in many forms, whenever being in doubt...  Simply google a part of the main text and then google will return something like this:

http://www.google.dk/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=scam+I+came+across+your+contact+information+on+the+internet+after+a+search+for+a+professional+photographer+and+I+hereby+write+to+request+if+you+will+be+available+to+offer+4hours+of+photographic+services+for+the+celebration+of+our+5th+wedding+anniversary+on+our+arrival+to+the+States.+Myself,my+wife,my+lovely+daughter-Debbie+and+about+12+family+members+and+friends+will+be+present.

And basically... NEVER trust anyone who "found" you and offer something where YOU need to do any sort of payment / money transfer!   :D

I have been trying for several months now. If the response to half of my 10 images that are submitted is simply "Not Approved:" with no further detail, but the other half do have reasons such as "Compositon" or "Commercial Value" are the former accepted at first but rejected because I've had less than 7 in the batch approved?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, this is what counts:

You need 7 out of ten approved.

Read the comments... Those of the images WITH comments - are actually "rejected" - IF there's more than 3 images rejected for a solid reason, the rest with no comments, might be sort of approved, but since the number of Real REJECTIONS IS MORE THAN 3,  the whole batch is rejected.

Hope you understand the writing as English is not my first language...    But anyway, this is how I understand it :-)

Agree...

If it's anything like CRESTOCK - in review times - in hysterical so called "quality" level, then I'm not sure I will put in much time and effort in uploading and submitting..

I guess they are happy with the 500k :)

You could say that, at least it seems that they are not in a hurry expanding the portfolio by reviewing applications and letting in new contributors :)

Thank you for all your insight in this matter...

I have asked fotolia why they think that my images needs a property release, when they actually are selling these exact same motif's as royalty free without property release..

If I have luck and they actually do decide to answer, naturally I'll paste the answer in this thread  ;D

Thanks again all

Thanks all,

I fully agree about the laws and especially the photography in the sistine chapel.

However, the main issue for me is that all agencies, including fotolia are in fact selling a large variety of images from the Vatican museum. Images that are in fact, showing the exact same ceilings as mine are... Mine were rejected for the same reason - and NOT due to any technical issues...

So my main issue is really that fotolia seems to be very inconsistant, since they have accepted the "same" images from others without property releases... And rejected mine for not having property releases...

And yes, basically it really doesn't matter with these few rejections - to me it's just a matter of trying to understand the reason for rejection.

When I'm in doubt wether or not to upload "grey area" inages without property releases, I generally do a search to determine if they generally does accept such images..  If there are lots of them present, then I generally just upload, expecting that property release is not necessary...

But now...  To me, all logic seems to be missing  ;D

11
Thanks....

BUT!
out of 5 rejections, only ONE of them were from the sistine chapel...  The rest is from the vatican museum and fotolia has quite a lot of the "same" views already for sale.. so why does the same rules not apply to every image of "same" motif?

And by the way...  dreamstime had no objections about the ONE image from the sistine chapel...

12
... and to complete the confusion, dreamstime has just accepted several of the very same images that fotolia just rejected...

Guess that the laws of property rights are subject to interpretation ...?   ???

13
Hi all,

I have just recieved 5 rejections due to missing property releases...

The full rejection mail is here:

---------------------------------------------
We regret to inform you that photo 24654917 the ceiling in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican has not been accepted, due to the photograph containing elements protected by Intellectual or Industrial property laws. Please understand that we made this decision purely for legal reasons.

Perhaps you could view our bog 'Rights: Trademark Representation', which discusses trademark laws: following Fidelia article>http://bog.Fidelia.com/UK/legal/brand.HTML

To discuss any legal issues/concerns, feel free to visit to the Legal board of the Fidelia forum.

Additionally, your photo shall not be reviewed for the free section, due to the legal, technical, or offensive issues mentioned above.

We know that it can be difficult to have an image rejected but please bear with us and continue to upload your images.

Kind Regards,

Fidelia Team EU

-----------------------------------------

Basically I really do accept and understand the occasionally rejections and normally I wouldn't give it another thought.  In this case it really seems to be anything but consistant with Thai normal policy...

This is one of the images, showing the interior of the Vatican Museum:

http://www.mostphotos.com/1258140/

When I do a search on Fidelia or any other microstock site, I get huge numbers of hits, basically showing the same motifs, so why can they sell that "same" images from other photographers when they claim that mine are in conflict with the laws of protecting laments of Intellectual or Industrial property?

Thanks for your feedback guys,
we had a little update after that - check it out see what you think :)
www.avidimages.net

QR8Design: Please check this forum. There is a very similar alternative to yours, basically offering exactly the same functionality for the cost of USD 0,00 plus a small percentage of 12% of all sales!

That's more or less a fair bargain..  I'm sorry to say that yours is simply too expensive!

16
Just wondering....

How is it possible for the editor to determine, wether or not a certain image will appeal to the customers?  I really doubt that it is possible for the editor to know anything about what current and future customers has a need for  ;D

...Why not just be honest and introduce another rejection reason, witch could be:

Great image, nothing wrong, but we just don't want it, have a nice day!

Till now I have no complaints, my initial batch of 10 were processed within less than 1 week - 8 approved and 2 rejected. The 2 rejections were for this reason:

Composition, styling, and/or lighting do not quite reflect the aesthetic that appeals to Veer customers. Please review our Contributor Guidelines to get a better sense of what we're looking for.

Both rejected images has passed inspection in lots of other sites, but still....  It's just two images, and if veer decides that they don't want them, even though they are selling in several other sites, well, that's veers decision.

I'm resurrecting this old thread for some update - nothing to attract people, on the contrary. It must be their last sigh before death...

Dear Contributing Photographers,
I hope that everyone has being having a good 2010.  This communication to all of you is long overdue and there is many things I need to brief all of you on regarding the status and future of Absolute Stock Photo.
I first want to address the excessive downtime of ASP over the past month. We host our own server and have been experiencing Denial of Service Attacks which effectively clogs up the works and crashes the web server rendering the site unreachable. I have not been able to identify/implement a solution to prevent this from happening so we are in a state of restarting the server over and over again. I understand this is an unacceptable state of operation and I have ultimate plans for migrating back to a professional hosting service. Since the price of storage is so much cheaper than 5 years ago I believe this will be a viable solution.
Second, I'd like to let you know that after much deliberation, I've come to the conclusion that we do need to keep up with the (dream)times and implement a subscription and credit system on our site. I found a great prefab solution that will do just the trick. When I found it back in April there was only one problem that I found with its implementation unfortunately it was a deal breaker. The problem was that the architecture the software used limited the number of files to 32K files. The vendor was made aware of this issue and finally on July 7Th they released an upgrade which resolves this file limitation.
I'd love your feedback on this software solution
http://www.absolute stockphotos.com
http://www.cmsaccount.com/photostore/online_demo/
At this point our sales are so small that running Absolute Stock Photo and putting the time in just to keep it running at a basic level is a financially losing proposition for me. I do have a significant emotional and historical time investment in Absolute Stock Photo and I do not have any intent on abandoning the business.
What I do foresee is generating an option for photographers to pay a fee and Ill set them up their own subdomain at absolute (i.e. firstnamelastname.absolutestockphoto.com) and for a monthly fee they can have all of the profits to their sales and have exclusive administrative rights so they can configure the site as they/you wish setting your own pricing, terms, etc. Im interested in your thoughts on this offering.
Due to the late release of the softwares defect fix and the fact that I dont have any extra time this summer migration of the site to the new software will begin in September.

Many Thanks!
Julie Landman

Thank you for using Absolute Stock Photo.

To me, this sounds exactly like what we have already seen from photoshelter..  Pay for the usage of the shop and don't blame us for the lack of sales...

Lighting / Re: How much to charge?
« on: July 08, 2010, 18:33 »
It's nice to be able to help your friends....  Make sure that he really understands that you're not able to create professional photographers "over night" !!! Meaning that it is unlikely that his own crew with next to no training, would be able to come anywhere near the result of his compeditors...

In stead...  Maybe you should make him realise that he needs YOU to do the shooting and the post processing of the images..

What you charge is up to you... Maybe you can get a lot of free furniture for your home...  Maybe you can get a decent and steady income from doing this work for him.. And as already suggested...  Maybe you can get free access to use the facilities for your own shooting...? And why not just sell the pictures you create for him at all the stock agencies?

Panthermedia.net / Re: Well done PM
« on: April 01, 2009, 09:43 »
Yes, interesting to follow... Still have my doubts though....

... PM is event worse than alamy when it comes to upload / submission
... PM is more or less the slowest agency when it somes to review...
... PM images seems to attract next to ZERO clicks... And equally "many" downloads  :D
... PM is German based and my fear is that the system perhaps favour german keywordings...?

So even after this one nice sales, I still have PM on the same list as YAY, CRESTOCK and ZYMM  - Meaning that I'm expecting them to either die, og if nothing changes, I'll be leaving on my own free will.... ;D

Great news..
I was about to give up on PM, not too long ago... But suddently I reciewed a mail from them, stating that I have had my first sale... One poster, earning ME some EUR 8,71 !

So regardless the killing pain of uploading and editing details, I've decided to give them one more chance as well..

I believe that some agencies are more picky than others, but it's no problem to use just one simgle generic release for all agencies. The trick is to meet the toughest demands, then there's no problem...

Yuri Arcurs is kind enough to share his. It can be downloaded for free on his homepage.. All you need to do is to personalize it with your own name and address, then you're up and running....  You'll find it here: http://www.arcurs.com/category/downloads

Since the D700X is not launched yet, you might have consedered the "older" D3X in stead    ;D

That one was out from the start, moneywise. I don't pay 7000+ euro for a "new" cam without sensor cleaning and without video. It was born as a grandpa. It's obvious why Nikon is holding the D700x back... they want to milk the D3x-ers first.

That might be the case...  But what is it with that video thing?  If you want a videacam, why not just buy one that's build for the purpose?
Isn't it like the mobile phone thing?  - None of you guys are shooting pictures with your mobile phone...

So why shoot video's with a DSLR ?

I'm also getting a wandering eye for the 5DII so Nikon better get moving on a D700X.

I couldn't wait since half April I'm far away shooting for months. Ordered the D5-II. Nikon was too late with the D700X. Too bad.

Fleminsh,

Since the D700X is not launched yet, you might have consedered the "older" D3X in stead    ;D
