Microstock Services / Re: Weekend With The Master III
« on: February 27, 2010, 05:11 »
Today was the opening day of the Vegas Vision Studios Weekend With The Masters 3 Workshop. Day 1 is always the staff shoot day of the weekend workshops as it gives us to make a run through the location and familiarize our selves with the peculiarities of lighting different sets at a new venue.

The beautiful Sarah M is a model I worked with about a year and a half ago that was very stiff and difficult to work with then. Now a year and a half later she has loosened up a bunch and really improved as a model. What a pleasure she was to shoot today.

I opted out as soon as it was announced. This really is looking like the year I will all but stop contributing to microstock and start seriously working the RM Agencies instead.

Adobe Stock / Re: FOTOLIA - NOW PAYING LESS THAN 16% !!!!!!
« on: February 03, 2010, 13:03 »
Anyone expecting fair and honest business practices in thier dealings with Fotolia has not been paying attention the past four years. They have a long history of self serving business practices that have shown little to no regard to the wlefare of their greatest asset (the contributor) and have always paid full service to their greatest concern (their greed)

Fotolia has always been known to bait and switch at the contributors expense.

I will be announcing models for this workshop soon. In addition to the plethora of beautiful women that you can always count on at a VVS workshop we will be adding 1 or 2 attractive males models to the group for the ladies as well. Can you say Abercrombie and Fitch style lifestyle stock images?

Hmmm. I wonder why would they risk alienating a lot of their existing contributors to go after what appears to be a fairly small group of new contributors?

And the fact that maybe only a small percentage of that small group will bite.

Why the would risk alienating ther existing contributors?
That's simple.
Because they have done time and time again in the past without any noticeable impact on their bottom line. Sure, there will be some ranting and complains in the forums, maybe even a few contributors may leave, but after a few weeks it's back to business as usual...

That's why they'll do it.

SOP for Fotolia is if you complain loudly about the way they treat you as a contributor they delete your account and deny you any further referral earnings even when you still have 2 years of referral earnings left from referring top contributors to them. Fair and honest treatment of the contributor base has never been part of the company credo. I spent many hours consulting (for free) back and forth with Oleg when he was first launching FT and in my personal opinion in the end as in the beginning he never showed any true concern for anything other then his own profit position in the operation. The contributors are simply a means to an end for him and that end is personal profit. Of course we all get into business with profit as the goal but in the case of FT it would seem to be the only true aspiration of the company. I expect that were I to sit down and extrapolate my potential earnings at FT over the past year had I not been railroaded off the site for standing up for contributor rights that I have lost out on $12,000 or more in royalty and referral earnings that would have come as the result of the elevated ranking which I was denied in the last ranking fiasco. Fotolia has a long and well documented track history of mistreating their contributor base yet the staus quo is maintained there. This change will no doubt go forward as has every other change in the history of the agency. In the end a handful will suffer the closing of their accounts and involuntary deleting of their portfolios and after a short time the roar will quiet and it will be business as usual at Fotolia until they announce their next scheme meant to further trample the rights of their contributor base.

14
Interesting, they threw me off the site a year ago when I objected to their moving the carrot 3 times further down the road when they changed their ranking requirements just days to weeks before about 200 of the original members (myself included) would have reached a sales level that would have elevated us to Emerald. Now they make it so anyone who has not joined them before this who has lifetime sales equal to mine would be able to come in at the top ranking level?

Such a fickle company and yet again it seems they are forgetting those who helped them become successful.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Shutterstock Guarantee??
« on: October 20, 2009, 12:23 »
The idea of guaranteed clear license on RF images is not a fresh innovative idea of Istock. Lawrence Gould launched VivioZoom a year or so ago. VivoZoom was the first RF agency to offer guaranteed image clearance. As usual IStock simply followed suit and made everyone believe they were the first.

In truth offering this guarantee is as simple as adding Errors and Omissions coverage to your personal liability insurance policy and I find it amazing that RF stock agencies have not been carrying E&O coverage right from the start. I would not even consider working in this industry without it.

What would be far more impressive would be seeing these agencies get more proactive on policing the EULA and protecting the contributors rights. Of course adding coverage to your insurance policy is a whole lot cheaper then adding a license enforcement department to your company. Besides we all know if a couple buyers get stung for using images that are not properly cleared all hell will break loose and Microstock would experience a mass dissertation of buyers who could not afford the risk. Contributors on the other hand accept that their images are being abused and used outside the bounds of the EULA on a daily basis and yet we all continue to silently contribute anywise.

Methinks Shutterstock will be paying out some nice protection money.  For example...

http://www.shutterstock.com/cat.mhtml?search_group=&lang=en&searchterm=harley&x=0&y=0

Sean if you actually look at the images in that search you will find that they are pretty much all listed as Editorial Use only. If a buyer uses them for a commercial use the problem would fall in their own front yard as they would be in violation of the EULA under which they downloaded the image

Edit: See what happens when I type before reading the whole thread ;-)

It definitely should be moved.  This is not general stock discussion

Really? I have 3 stock focused workshops coming up in the next 60 days and this information would be used to improve them and tailor them to the need and desires of this communities members.

Is this set of questions any less stock related then a demographic defining survey asking what is your day job? Had I said that the info was to improve my stock workshops rather then just workshops in general would the topic have been left where the general population of this community would have the best chance to see it like the demographic poll?

Thanks Nosaya, so if I am reading you correctly what you would really prefer would be organized and lightly structured shootouts where you would have the opportunity to work with pro models in exceptional environments to create unique content that you could use for stock. That you actually have no desire for the instructional side of it and would prefer to just be able to come in and start shooting?

Point #12 is what would be the optimum cost per day for you for an opportunity such as you outlined?

Albumo.com / Re: ALBUMO GONE
« on: August 31, 2009, 22:31 »
Yet another reason to do some homework before you upload to a site.  There are several threads here in this forum dealing with Albumo.  Just reading one or two would be enough to steer any contributor from signing up.
400 Day lock-in on images, lack of any response from Albumo representatives *whoever they are*, their *main* HQ located in a residential apartment complex, the inability to delete more than one photo per day, ... the list is endless :)
Good luck, I hope you find a speedy solution.

Some of us joined well before there were any threads here about them. When they first opened they paid a nice signing bonus for uploading 1,000 or more images. The problem is they never paid anything after the bonus.

In an effort to improve my workshops and make them events that offer the greatest value for the attending photographers dollar I am looking for photographer feedback from several different photography communities.

If you have a thought on the options offered below or thoughts on what would make the perfect workshop for you please share them here or send me an email. My email address is available in my profile here.

All who provide constructive feedback will be entered into a drawing and one respondent will receive a certificate allowing them to participate in there cohice of any one (1) two day workshop offered by VVS in the next 24 months.

So if you could custom order the perfect stock, beauty or glamour workshop experience what would be the key elements for you.

1. Ability to create unique content?
we already provide this in our glamour and beauty workshops

2. Group Size?

3. Model to photographer ratios of 1:2 or better?

4. Multiple Locations or studio environments?

5. Number of Days?

6. All inclusive pricing?

7. Guest Instructors who specialize in the field of the workshop theme?

8. Availability for personal instruction?

9. Weekday / Weekend schedule?

10. Availability to book private shoots with models before or after workshops with discounted studio rental rates?

11. Hard defined shooting structure or open encouragement of personal creativity?

12. Price point per day?

13. Other?

Welcome to the club. They kicked me out a long time ago for arguing against another one of their rediculaus and greedy policy changes that cheated all of us who helped found the site out of a significant raise.

Dreamstime has never been a place for discussion of topics that have a potential for heated debate especially when it could lead directly to them coming under fire for their own policies
