General Stock Discussion / Re: Cost per image?
« on: September 03, 2009, 11:47 »
although this is an old thread, i'm interested to restart the conversation as i couldn't find other topics on this issue that concerns me a lot - costs per image

based on my past works, i find that the costs per image for me averages out to about US$20

that's inclusive
(1) studio rental costs
(2) outdoor logistic costs (if not shooting in studio)
(3) post-processing costs ($$ spent hiring others to help with retouching and keywording)
(4) my own time spent (this is hard to quantify, but basically i attach a base price for my time spent shooting)

does anyone else has any useful information to share about this? are there any public information about costs per image for the top producers such as Yuri Arcurs or Andres ?

My take is this - photography as a profession is a glamorous job (to the non-professionals who don't rely it for a living)

Just like singers and actors (also glamorous jobs), there are too much supply and not enough demand.

Most singers end up performing for small pubs and bars. Only the top 1% record albums, perform in big concerts, make world tours and get fat endorsement deals. The rest struggle to stay in their dream job.

likewise, it's hard for a photographer to earn more than your average banker, accountant or lawyer. the top 1% earns millions and do dream shoots. the rest struggles.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Metadata missing on uploads on IS
« on: September 03, 2009, 11:29 »
from my own experience, istockphoto fails to capture my images' metadata only about 20% of the time.

about 80% of the time, they show up.

i realise that the metadata info goes missing more often when i try to upload multiple images concurrently. i.e. opening up mulitiple browser tabs or windows and uploading a few images at the same time.

if i upload the images one after another, it's usually OK.

anyone share the same experience?
