Thanks, guys, for taking the time to respond. I'm not going to explain what you already know to be true -- that it's not always the most talented photographers or the prettiest pictures that make the sale.
Your competition has now grown to include soccer moms with entry-level SLR cameras and starving watercolorists who scrounge up enough money for a decent camera and know nothing more than how to shoot with it on Program mode.
And yes, it's true that we encourage those people to get involved in stock photography.
We believe the market is big enough for all of us. We also believe in paying it forward. Most of our instructors either had help getting into photography and so are willing to help others, or they had no help and a long, hard road ahead of them and so are willing to help others avoid their mistakes.
If it's not right for you, though, I understand. But the proof is in the pudding and the photographers that work with us love what they're doing.
We pay $150-$350 for tips we can feature in our free subscription newsletter. And the pay-rate for workshops and expeditions varies depending on what you can teach. We're currently looking for a pet photographer if you know anyone. Ren Netherland taught for us the year before last and he's the best. It's been hard to find someone that can teach pet photography (and, of course, how to make money as a pet photographer) as well as he did so now that our standards are so high, we're not settling for just an average pet photographer who's not making a lot of money at it.
