General Stock Discussion / Re: Timing of Holiday shoots
« on: November 18, 2006, 07:20 »
I sent in some Christmas shots, no tree yet,  in October and sold a couple.  I would guess on the purpose of the publication.  Some start their holiday stuff a year in advance.  I plan on taking pics all through the holiday season, that way they would be available all year long.  I took some shots of shells and posted in Oct./Nov. and they are getting more views.  Maybe they are getting started on summer/beach stuff.

Hey Ian!  Bought a book yesterday called "2007 Photographer's Market", 30th Annual Edition, Published by: Writter's Digest Books, Editor: Donna Poehner.  This book is full of businesses  that uses photographs that you can submit to. I saw one, and I just started looking at this book, that you may be interested in.  It's called  "Cruising World" (magazine).  You may have heard of it, since you sail.  Their web site is: www.cruisingworld.com. Check it out, might get some sales there.

This book is so cool!  It tells you who the companies are, their contacts, addresses, web sites, what their needs are, how to send in your submissions, specs, Approx. how much they are will to pay.  Gives Consumer Publications, Newspapers, Trade Publications, Book Publishers, Stock Photo Agencies, Advertising Agencies, Galleries, Art Fairs, etc.

Welcome!  Newbie here also.  Finally come out of the guest login like me? ;D

Wow, Chellyar! Busy, busy, busy man.  If you have delusions of wanting to write, then why don't you tell a story with your photography?  Pick a topic that you know well, take the shots and write the words.  I know sounds simple, right?  I couldn't do it.  But I don't want to write either.  Wouldn't know where to start.

Saw my cousin yesterday who has the cutest kids. I have none, though I have (3)cats and (1) big dog.  I told her that if she would let me take portraits of her children for her to keep in exchange of signing a model release.  She was all over it.  She is a single mother.  I am thinking about going into portrait photography.  But I want to use family members first, just to see if that's the way I want to go and to also start a portfolio.  I am really trying to find something with a twist.

where do you get the snapshots thread thing from.

This is the 'get to know you' thread, so what you are writing seems to be quite on topic, and interesting for a jealous fellow like me :)

Snapshot here. Leaf is right.  This is exactly what I wanted!  So don't apologize.  I'm enjoying it, as well as others.

There is a lot of threads on the SS forum about resubmitting some of your original ten to find and the general advice there is NO-NO-NO! Btw It took me also a second round to get accepted. Another idea is posting the pics you plan to submit on the SS forum or a link here and we can all give our opinion. SY

That many people can't be wrong.  We need to listen.

I've reached my 200th download at iStock - 300 more and I'll be a bronze canister! :)

Here is the milestone image, a recent upload that I like so much: Phone closeup

Congratulations on the 200th!  Just got my e-mail yesterday on my initial application and submissions.  They didn't like one of them and asked me to remove it and submit another one.  Now it will probably take another 2 1/2 weeks.  But at least I'm not locked out for a month!

unless those ones they liked are border line. You can get different reviewers with different opinions and they might reject an image they accepted earlier. If you think you have better other images, I wouldn't hesitate to submit them instead. On the other hand, it isn't a bad idea to submit those ones they liked either. If you are unsure of your images it is probably the best plan.

Feel free to post thumbs of your images in the forum and we can give you some opinions.

I guess we could say this, "If in doubt, don't."

I now sail up and down the eastern pacific coast, on my 55 ft sailboat, south in winter, north in summer, taking pics which are starting to pay for my lifestyle. Next year, I'm off to Mexico, down to Costa Rica, and then...??? should provide a goodly amount of shots to fill my portfolio.

Ian

Sheeeeesh! ... Lucky guy. What a great lifestyle. Congratulations on achieving it.

I spent 20 years working in Africa and amassed thousands upon thousands of colour trannies as I was a keen photographer and, for part of that time, I worked in a game park. When I got back to Europe I never knew what to do with my pictures except enter them for the occasional competition ... and look at them every now and again to get nostalgic :'( (I miss Africa)

Then I discovered these sites, started scanning the slides and submitting.

Then I got myself a digital camera and started shooting. Wow! Digital was a revelation after film. Got seriously hooked on that and I'm so busy shooting digital and processing them for submission that the scanning of the slides is on hold.

Now I do this about half-time. The rest of the time I'm a freelance writer/editor. But I'm hoping to build up the photo sales so that I can make it full-time. I really love photography ... and sailing ... and Africa.

It's so great that you are doing what you love to do.  You inspire me.  I used to get jealous of people when they achieved something great.  Of course, that has all changed. Age. Now it motivates me.

Not to hijack this thread, but I have a question about SS initial ten.

-If some (5) of my SS submission were good (5 rejected), can I inlcude those good 5 in my next ten (30-days later)? Or does SS frown on that?

I've been accepted and have portofios (roughly 30-50 photos, still a newbie) on Istock, Dreamstime, Fotolia, Stockxpert, 123RF, Canstock, Bigstock, LuckyOliver and featurepics. I'm averaging about 2 to 3 DLs per day now (via total of all sites). I've submitted to SS twice. All ten of first batch rejected (was the first site I submitted to, and the rejection was clearly justified). On my second swipe (last week), I was at 50%.

Thanks for the thoughts...really enjoy this forum

I would include the five they liked.  If they liked them, they will like them again.  I know which ones they liked of mine and I plan to resubmit them when I am able to get back on, hopefully that will be this weekend.  Good Luck

Part time for me. I work full-time for a school district in the maintenance and operations branch. I love taking pictures and get a great deal of satisfaction every time someone downloads one of my pictures! I've been doing this since June of this year and have been lucky enough to receive a payout from at least one site each month. Love having a bit of extra spending cash (and a wonderful tax write off).
I also totally agree with Leaf. I love the satisfaction I get from stock photography and the fact I don't have to answer to or please anyone else.

You know what, I'm going to have to agree with you and Leaf.  I am in Sales and I am always having to put out fires, deal with people day in and day out.  It is nice to have an outlet.  To enjoy what I do and if the photo fits their application, then great, if not, then I will keep on shooting to find one that does.  I just love it.

snapshot,

I believe that to create some serious well done illustrations, it takes both a lot of talent and work (plus some software knowledge, of course). I'm jealous of some illustrations I see. I can do only very basic stuff, like this:

The best thing in terms of productivity is to create designs in which you can reuse elements in new designs.

I started with Canvas 8, now I use Illustrator CS2.

Adelaide

That's a very pretty design!  Maybe I should start with a cheaper software in the beginning to see if it would be something that I would want to really get into.  Looks like that what you did. I mean, I don't know how much Canvas 8 is, but I do know how much Illustrator is.  Cha-ching, know what I mean?  Thank you for your help.

Off Topic / Is it hard to create vectors? Does it take long to do?
« on: November 16, 2006, 06:51 »
I see a lot of vectors and I think they are so cool.  Looks like it would be fun to create.  Never done it before.  Looks like you would use Illustrator for this.  I have CS2, ImageReady and Photoshop.  Does it take long to create a vector? Is it very difficult to do?  Like I said, I don't know the first thing about it.

What a woman! You are beeezzzzzy. I admire you. Go for your dreams! I just turned 43 and now I know what I want to be when I grow up! Why do you think parents ask their kids what they want to be when they grow up....to get ideas :D

Hey Snapshot...I know exactly where you're coming from! I just decided what I wanted to do a few years ago, too...at the tender age of 40. But even though it takes time to get where I want to be, I know I did the right thing. Five minutes of time spent doing photography (which I adore) is worth more to me than the 20 years I spent as a legal secretary (which I didn't realize how much I disliked until I got away from it). Unforturnately, my husband is not entirely supportive of my decision, but for my own sanity, I'm sticking with it. It's too enticing to wake up every day knowing I get to spend it doing something I love for a change!

I look at it this way, if you do what you enjoy and that's what makes you happy then your husband & family will also benefit.  My husband enjoys his motorcycle and for years I wouldn't "let" him have one.  I gave in.  Now he is happy and in turn I benefit as well.  Makes sense?  Whenever I mention something that I would like to have for my camera equipment, my husband will sneak behind my back and get it for me.  It's nice to have support.

Yellow Dog, the attached thread described my feelings exactly.  Couldn't have said it better myself.  That's why I tell people that I don't do weddings, except for very close friends and family. I don't want that kind of responsibility!  This is their and your one time shot.  If you screw it up, you can't go back to the couple and oh yeah, the mothers-in-law, and say,"Hey, can we redo the wedding, I don't know, say next Saturday?"  Portraits, maybe I could do, a little more relaxed atmosphere I would think.  I would need to build a portfolio first.  Family members, yeah, that's it.

19
Oh Tom, how cool is that!!!!!!!!!!!!  Congratulations!!!!!  Do you have your e-mail available to view?  How did they know how to contact you?  What are you going to be shooting.  I am so excited for you and your family!

20
Leaf,How long have you been doing portraits and weddings? Thought about doing that myself. I have taken weddings for friends and family. Don't know if I want to deal with people I don't know, although; I know that's where the money is. Like a friend of mine says, "If it talks back, I don't shoot it." He is a commercial photographer for a frozen vegetable plant. Cauliflower is his game. Do you get a lot of hassle from you portrait and wedding shoots? Tell us a good story!

« on: November 15, 2006, 08:16 »
How many of you do this full time or part time?  If part time, what else do you do?
How long have you been submitting?
If doing this part time, is your goal to go full time?

Not being nosey. I just like learning about other people.  I'm Southern (Tennessee, US) I can't help myself  ;D

I have just started submitting.  I do this part time. My bill paying job is in sales, forklift parts and service.  On the road a lot.  I started my submissions in Sept.  My goal is to do this full time, if the money is right or continue part time but find other work in photography.

Oh, I thought that's what it meant.  Thank you.  No, I don't do that.  I'm all about competition and I want it to be fair.  So I'm not going to throw in a bunch of words that don't apply.  I have seen plenty on sites   that do.  That's just wrong.  Oh, by the way, BigStock just accepted 9 out of 10 this morning.  Woohoo!  Let me ask you this, I sent in my initial batch of photos to IS on Oct. 31st.  Still no response (11-15), does it take this long?

The wait used to be 3 months! Wow!  After looking at by photos better, I saw what they saw.  I have learned a lot in this month's waiting period.  I guess that's their point.  I have submitted to FT, BigStock, & Can Stock and was accepted and have sold a couple.  I don't have very many on each site as I work a full time job in sales.  But this is what I really want to do.  I may take me a couple of years, but I am working on it.  I have also learned that it takes forever typing in all of those key words, so what I do now is go to can stock first, use their keyword button, use the ones that apply, copy and paste them to a word document and I use those words on the other sites.  What a time saver!  I have another question that I see on these forums, what is "keyword spamming"?
