Shutterstock.com / Re: 2014 Design Trends from Shutterstock
« on: January 27, 2014, 16:55 »
Hi all,

The term "Instagram-esque" in the infographic simply refers to the basic filters that some creatives use on a daily basis.  The images can be created with smartphones, but many contributors use filter effects on images taken with professional level DSLRs.

As some customers look for images with a vintage or social media aesthetic, we have become more accommodating in the acceptance of filtered images, as long as images are executed in a creative manner and do not deteriorate the image itself.  Some customers prefer to add effects on their own, but we have come to learn that others appreciate a more refined (finished) style as well. Quality is still very important and excessive noise or artifacts can still lead to a rejection.

To clarify some points further:

1) "Instagram" can be used as a keyword on commercial images which appear to have been created using a filter, but it should only be used in those images that have an aesthetic or characteristics similar to Instagram.  Should you upload imagery with this "look", do submit keywords which are accurate, as this will help customers locate that "type" of image in our database.  We ask that you use this keyword sparingly and appropriately.

2) The word "Instagram" should **not** be used as a keyword in a commercial image which displays the Instagram trademark (unless it is an editorial image, which is fine), or any other image which is similar to the Instagram trademark (i.e.: combination of photo lens, camera and rainbow).

3) Filters are allowed for editorial images, but any editorial image that has been processed with filters should indicate that in the caption.  For example, "This image has been processed with filters."   Please note that documentary and news images must still follow guidelines for accurate and truthful depictions. Filters that are used to mislead or otherwise alter the content of a documentary or news image are strictly not allowed.

Overall, we are constantly working on improving our workflows to better reflect customer needs as well as cater to what our creative contributors submit for review. We also mature our standards over time with a parallel goal of creating consistency and clarity for contributors. Keep creating great material and we will continue to market your material to our customers as effectively as possible.  When you have questions, please reach out to us at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Anthony Correia

Newbie Discussion / Re: Shutterstock Application Review Process
« on: December 13, 2013, 12:49 »
Please could anyone tell me how the review process for new 'wanting' to be contributors to shutterstock works - or rather doesn't.
Whilst I understand they have to have a review process to set standards why when I resubmitted all 10 images that they said would have passed  did they fail 6 if the ones that had previously passed.
These same images are successful on other sites including alamy.
Thanks.

admin edit: changed to a more descriptive subject

Dear Sue,

I will be in touch with you via direct email to help with this process.

Scott,

I sent an email to [email protected] regarding rejections last Dec 2nd and have had no reply yet. What's the normal time I can expect I have a response?

Dear peresanz,

We normally answer questions like yours within 24hrs or less.  For your specific question, another dept needed to be engaged which caused the delay you experienced, unfortunately.  Please accept my apologies and know that a member of my staff is working on resolving your case immediately.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Poorly isolated elements
« on: December 04, 2013, 11:50 »
I tried some days ago to submit a raster version of an approved vector and today I got the confirmation email : "Image and/ or elements of  image have  been poorly
isolated." I don't understand what's the problem since I uploaded many rastered versions in the past that got accepted, and they were all isolated on white background. And this file is no different from the rest. It's just a flower isolated on white background.

Dear adrian3008,

Unfortunately, the image reviewer did not use the correct rejection reason for your image.  (Instead of "poorly isolated", the reason should have been "poor rasterization.")  However, in assessing the image with a member of the review team, we feel that the edge is actually acceptable since the aliasing is only minor.  As a result, it would be fine to resubmit the image for another review evaluation.  (I will email you directly with the specific custom note to use for the review team today.)

Tip: Resubmitting without a specific note to the review team explaining the resubmission (or a custom note) is not advised.  Always communicate with the team why a resubmission is occurring.  If you reach out to my team, we will help assess and create a custom note for you to use, if necessary.  If the image should not be resubmitted, we will let you know that as well.

For all reading this message, should a question come up regarding a review, feel free to contact us via email for assistance: [email protected].  We are here to help resolve your issues.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Inconsistent reviewing
« on: November 25, 2013, 14:50 »
Hello everyone,

If someone experienced an unjust review, we are ready, willing and able to help correct the issues directly with everyone.  We are here to help guide, correct and admit the mistake, whenever applicable (and if warranted).

Should you want to re-submit images that you feel were incorrectly reviewed or you feel that they may cause review issues for you of some kind (if a submission of new content), please feel free to add a custom note to the review team to let the team know some background on what you are submitting for review consideration (i.e.: this is a resubmission due to XYZ issue with image#1234567. Issue has been resolved.)  (Of course, if a resubmission, make sure the issue has been resolved -- do not resubmit without explaining or correcting the main issue first.  Also, excessive re-submissions will not be tolerated by the review team.)  If in doubt, email us at [email protected].

Custom Note (a note that you create)
Using a scenario of an image of our moon, the custom note should simply reference that the image is your creation, not from any third party (i.e.: NASA); Reference that it is your own creation.

Alternate Idea (custom note that we issue to you before you submit)

You may also write in to us via [email protected] to request a custom note for the review team at any time for any image you feel may not be reviewed correctly (yes, before you submit! Simply send us a low-res version which will help us assess the image before you submit (keep the file attachments to under 20MBs, please)) or, if already reviewed/was not reviewed correctly (already rejected so, need to explain for a 2nd review consideration).  You may consider this a pre-screening of your content to ensure a seamless review process.  (Note: Some images may not be acceptable at all so, we may actually write back saying no custom note will be issued because the image is not acceptable due to XYZ reason.  This will save time for everyone involved and help with the processing of images through review which is great for everyone involved.)

Finally, should anyone ever have any difficulties, please reach out to us via [email protected].  We are here to help everyone be successful.

Sincerely,
Anthony Correia

Dear David,

I have emailed you specific instructions in order to correct this recent issue you experienced.  Should you have any questions, please do write back.

All: When submitting images that (you suspect) may cause review issues for you or have already been rejected, please feel free to add a custom note to the review team to let the team know some background (i.e.: this is a resubmission due to XYZ issue with image#1234567. Issue has been resolved.)  (Of course, make sure the issue has been resolved -- do not resubmit without explaining or correcting the main issue first.  Also, excessive re-submissions will not be tolerated by the review team.)

Today, my earnings, on the contributors home page, sign $0
And my last approved images don't appear in my portfolio
Yes thats normal, new month, reset of earnings to 0 and images can take up to 24 hours if not longer to appear in the search

Hello Beppe Grillo,

Yes, Poncke v2 is correct, in that earnings are reset every month, but only if you have achieved your minimum payout for that month.

When a payment is pending, your gross earnings will be reduced to zero and you will receive an email from Shutterstock on the first business day of the month. If you did not receive this email in your inbox we recommend you check your spam folder. (Note: It is not necessary to request your payouts, as they are made automatically by the 15th day of the following month as long as your minimum payout is reached.)

You will be able to see how your payout breaks down in your payment history after the payment has been processed: http://submit.shutterstock.com/payment_history.mhtml (must be logged in, of course).

All: We are here to help answer your questions so email us directly via [email protected].

I hope this info is helpful.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Change of Most popular
« on: May 12, 2013, 08:28 »
Hello all,

At Shutterstock, we perform regular tests of small modifications to search.   Those tests are typically released to limited segments of the overall customer population. If a test wins over time which typically means that the changes have demonstrably increased the total number of customer downloads then the resulting improvements are accepted and deployed.

Search testing and analysis is a continuous process of small improvements that generally wont result in dramatic swings in search. Changes are carefully tested and evaluated to make sure that the overall effect on customer downloads and/or purchases is a positive one.

Customer demand, content differentiation, keyword quantity and quality, global holidays, seasonality and other factors can affect an individual contributor's day-to-day earnings.  We recommend allowing a little time before evaluating the effect on your personal portfolio.

Sincerely,
Anthony Correia

Hello MisterElements,

We appreciate your questions and will do our best to answer them for you.

Please know that this policy has been in effect for some time now and is consistently applied across all vector and illustration submissions.  As you can understand, our reviewers only request reference images for vector or illustration submissions which appear to be similar to, copied, traced or recreated from a reference image.  Not all vector and illustration submissions will require a copy of a reference image.  This may account for why it appears that we apply this policy inconsistently, but please be assured that the same rules apply to everyone.

Our goal with this policy is to make the process of submitting vectors and illustrations easier for our contributors.  Instead of having an image rejected by the reviewer with a request for the reference image, the contributor can now upload both items to streamline review for that image. This, in turn, will reduce our review queues and expedite our overall review times.

Additionally, submitting a reference image will help protect you if there is ever a claim regarding ownership of your work.  While we can't go into detail about our internal legal processes, having a copy of your reference image on file will allow us to address these claims quickly without changing the status of your account.

Please note that a release is no longer required to submit reference images; you need only submit a copy of the reference image with your vector or illustration submission.  This means a scanned copy or clear photograph of the reference image will be enough.  For images created directly on a program, we would not need a reference image or screenshots of the process.

We hope this addresses your questions and concerns. We also hope that you understand that this policy is meant to expedite review as well as protect you from ownership disputes.  As always, please email us at [email protected] for any questions about your own submissions.

Sincerely,
Anthony Correia
