General Stock Discussion / Re: To sharpen or not to sharpen?
« on: October 07, 2013, 14:20 »
dont sharpen, it makes sense only for prints or web size.

soft focus : maybe they mean there's a little bit of camera shake ?

2
so the crooks at Google/Bing/Yahoo aren't even making any money with their image search and yet their service is having a destructive effect on photographers, photo agencies, and photo archives.

3
If Google images wasn't around, there would be something else.

that's not the point.

the logic for which the music and movie industries are fighting Torrent sites is THE SAME for which  google images and any other similar service should be banned and made illegal.

new competitors popping up ? unlikely considering the huge costs of running a whole datacenter, how are they going to break even or make a small profit ? no one managed to monetize image search so far.

Use Google Reverse Image Search.

this will only work for images embedded using the IMG tag in HTML.

but i'm seeing lots of and lots of newspapers displaying images and especially slideshows using CSS tags, Javascript, and Flash.

none of these images will be indexed in google images.

5
There is something that can be done about it.  Something is done about misuses of downloaded programs, music and movies.

yes, shutting down Google Images, as that's the root of all evils.

but no, now google just recently launched a sort of media player too ... search for famous music artistis and you'll be offered with thumbnails and links to play MP3 and videos for free !

on top of this they take pride in operating in europe but paying a pittance of taxes in their HQ in Ireland.

this is the biggest mafia ever seen on the internet and no one is moving a finger, microsoft has been forced to pay hundreds of millions of $ in damages in the EU but google seems to be untouchable.

6
I don't think there is much that can be done. If they were, there would not be torrent sites full of pirated content.

it's just a matter of political will, if they can shut down Silk Road what's stopping them from shutting down all the public torrent sites ?

and here you can read their pro-piracy BS from the horse's mouth, basically a bunch of idiot teenagers and lamers :

http://torrentfreak.com/

7
It must be costing us and them a small fortune when people can easily obtain huge size images for nothing.

on the other side these crooks would probably never pay for stock images anyway.

if they feel free stealing RF pics do you think they're scared stealing hires pics with google images ?

just search "shutterstock <keyword>" on google images and set the search to "large" size, there are TONS of full size stock images.

8
so, is it working or .. ?

Photoshop Discussion / Re: Attack on Adobe Computer Network
« on: October 04, 2013, 16:09 »
because so many things we do are all online....

In the West, but in the rest of the world forget it.

Here in Asia it's all about cash $$, for online payments they use paypal, western union, moneybookers, and many others shady services i wouldn't trust much.

credit cards are also not popular at all in poor countries, and hard to get even for business, so banks will give you virtual credit card numbers to use online or prepaid visa/MC cards.

considering the astounding amount of scams occurring in asia i would NEVER ever consider using a CC in asia apart korea/japan/singapore/hongkong !

it's crazy that Adobe is now selling only online, this will be a disaster for their asian sales but after all their boxed products were always hard to find in stores as here piracy is 100% open air, in places like vietnam it's almost seen as fully legal, they just crackdown on vietnamese pirated movies or songs.

10
netbooks : yeah, i see new ones for less than 300$ and they beat tables hands down in any department in my opinion, they're a pc, you can do everything, but the keyboards are way too small for me.

11
many years ago already i used a pocket external hdd with a Copy button and memory cards slots, worked fine, i bought it in china for a pittance maybe 30$ without hdd ?, guess it's still on sale with different brands, you can connect it to any pc via USB.

THIS :

i had a different brand but it looks almost the same.
there's an internal battery and once it's fully loaded it will last a long time.

Alamy.com / Re: Alamy is going to sell VECTORS
« on: October 04, 2013, 10:55 »
I've also started with Vectors but telling me unless I have a huge portfolio you are not interested... that is a rather nasty backhand. I think I'll sell them elsewhere...

they should do the same in every other agency, it would quickly fix the oversaturation and oversupply issue !

after all if you don't have at least 1000 saleable images you're not a stocker so these agencies are not for you anyway.

vectors are a bit different as it takes a lot more time to make 1000 vectors, and same for videos.

what a pr nightmare for them. how can we trust them with ongoing cc subs payments? they need a paypal option.

considering how greedy Adobe is, they could make you pay a bonus to further "protect" your registration/payment data ! :(

these guys have no shame.

@ Ron. They did get credit card details but in an encrypted form.

the CC numbers are just 0-9 numbers so they can be easily decrypted, for the customers' personal data it's harder but not impossible, not at all especially if they have access to the whole database.

besides, there's no guarantee adobe was actually using encryption at all, it could be pretty much stored in a huge uncompressed database file as far as we know, but of course they're in denial.

ohh and someone now will blame the NSA for that.

And the CEO says "You don't like it? No problem! We'll close the plant and move to another state with a thousand people willing to work for us. Or we'll just go to Mexico."

well, same with Getty and Istock ... in their eyes photographers are dime a dozen, guess they hope we'll be replaced by hordes of third world suppliers ?

however, unlike factory workers we cannot be easily replace with cheap mexicans or vietnamese, even indians and philippinos aren't invading the stock industry and they're the only ones in asia with good enough spoken/written english to keyword and all.

why they're not joining stock in droves ? i don't know but so far that's the way it is.
as far as i see only western expats here are into stock, reportage, newswire agencies, etc

as for america, they will certainly devalue the US dollar to stay afloat, little by little to avoid troubles, but for the local workers it's gonna be bad, very bad, just like it is in europe now, and even in parts of china they're moving out to cheaper areas or even to vietnam, laos, cambodia, myanmar.

Nikon itself opened a new factory in the Laos border and will probably close or partially close the other factory in Ayutthaya near Bangkok.

now, what's cheaper than Laos ? hmm ... Cambodia, but just a little bit, probably they skipped Cambodia because of the awful infrastructures and widespread corruption, same issues they would face in Indonesia by the way and what about Philippines ?

but this is the trend, china is now too expensive and many will move to greener pastures.

so we're already witnessing the second or third stage of global outsourcing :
the chinese are now complaining that south east asians are "stealing their jobs" !

Selling Stock Direct / Re: Self-Hosted at 14.6 - top 5
« on: October 03, 2013, 13:10 »
I think Xanox meant downloads.

well, just to have an idea, how many downloads vs number of images on sale for instance, and possibly in which industry : lifestyle, travel, whatever.

considering a Photoshelter standard account is 30$/month for 60GB of space or 50$ for 1TB  it's good to read many earn way more than the hosting costs.

the real issue is always the same : how can such a biz can scale further and how much it's gonna cost to acquire a new customer ? 10$ ? 20$ ? 100$ ?

Isnt it funny though, that every initiative is turned into a negative?

Symbiostock, Stocksy, ImageBrief, PicturEngine, etc etc, there is nothing save from being hammered on MSG.

Ugh.

not our fault if the industry is dominated by Getty, IS, and SS.

these newcomers have just no chance, it's too late now, and they've no money either to make a dent in the industry.

it seems they all downplay how much difficult and expensive it the stock industry, i think it's one of the most difficult nowadays to get the foot in the door.

19
yeah they blame it on the war but first of all on the president, now they will blame Obama as if replacing him with a fresh republican would make any difference.

and finally they will blame it on the americans, they will say americans waste too much, spend too much, do too many debts, consume too much, etc etc

if you're poor jobless and sick you'll be told it's only your own fault because you're a spiness loser and a disgrace.

20
Almost 50 million Americans are on what used to be known as food stamps.

that's 20% of the US population.

how many more millions will it will take to make the government rethink its welfare strategy ?

Newbie Discussion / Re: Where do you sell photos for big money?
« on: October 02, 2013, 23:28 »
the big money is only in art galleries and scandalistic/paparazzi stuff.

and by the way, the only ones doing billions with photography are Canon and Nikon ! :)

Their latest blog post tells you how to make $10,000 through them....good luck!

smoke and mirrors.

you could probably buy the whole agency for 100K $.

General Stock Discussion / Re: 500PX is it worth uploading?
« on: October 02, 2013, 23:24 »
OK thanks guys. Cant be bothered to upload to them then. :)

me too but i will try with a small batch just for the laughs, i want to read the flickr-style comments hahaha.
i'm going to put a big watermark right in the middle of the pics.

General Stock Discussion / Re: 500PX is it worth uploading?
« on: October 02, 2013, 12:36 »
No watermark protection of your images there. I decided against it since I fear 500px will hurt my sales on the micros.

i've read that it's up to you to add a watermark but it's not appreciated by the guys writing comments to each image so they will downvote your pics and writing BS.

you can sell both prints and downloads, but where are the sales ? if we look at their Sales page it's the typical stuff sold on RedBubble and similar sites, mostly about wildlife, nature, landscapes and i could be wrong but i checked the page a few times and they're always the same photos so either it's not updated or they're selling nothing.
