General Stock Discussion / shutterstock
« on: July 31, 2013, 13:57 »
Thanks to all the people who have vested interests with  shutterstock or work for them and disrupt normal discussions and add  negative voting.

I understand some here make a bit of money with these clowns, others are working there and some have marketing interests with them.

Have fun and continue to send pictures for few dollars a year to crook exploiting your work to make millions. They need the 99% of idiots who will never make a living out of it.

From their FAQs -

"You can disable all files approved more than six months ago at any time. You are allowed to disable 30% of files uploaded in the recent six months however 70% must be kept online for six months from their approval date. You can disable the remaining 70% after six months pass. Once the files are disabled, nobody is able to view/access them, except for you. The files will remain in our offline database for 12 months until all liabilities (refunds, potential copyright infringements, etc) concerning them are cleared off, then they are automatically deleted.

The account cannot be closed until the above requirements of the contract expire. Accounts with activity (license/download) cannot be deleted, as they can be referenced internally in regards to past licensing. However, they can be blocked from public access.

More account closure details can be found in our Terms and Conditions."

A real screw up, worse than Telecom operators. And people sign that without reading...

How much a stock contributor makes by month

And then compare with the one who make the most monthly.

 8)

How much do you make monthly (stock only) ?

Another theory: cooking the books (Enron style)
Another theory: Sales are up (SEC report) but your sales are down or they don't report your sales. Or they do it later that allowed for treasury purpose.
Another theory: People (meaning buyers and creative) are fed-up with this cheap low quality model.
Another theory: The hype is down, new websites will take their place in the short term.
Another theory: Buyers realize they don't need anymore stocks, they buy directly from us at double price  :D :)

Selling Stock Direct / Re: Right use of photos by buyers
« on: July 31, 2013, 13:26 »
It depends what you want to do with your website.
There are grossly two models:
Right managed: You set-up price, size and conditions of use of the picture by buyers. You can limit it by country, region, number of use, support etc.. Look at Getyy or Alamay to see how they licence their right managed images.
Royalty free: The buyer can do almost anything he wants. The model itself calls for low wages and copyright abuse.

If a buyer doesn't respect the license model he agreed with you (like using a image twice while it was contracted for one use), you have to pursue him, otherwise you will lose a lot of money. Some buyers do it by negligence, other know perfectly that they are cheating.

Most of time  the wrongdoer will comply if he knows copyright laws are on your side. An email is enough in 90% of the cases. However, if you sell your pictures as a business on your own, you have to be prepared to use a lawyer for those who abuse and violate your copyrights. Here too, with time, you can make money.

The positive thing is: You are not protected more on Getty, Alamy, i-stock or others than on your own website. You have to defend your right and wages in any case.

Instead of a rant full of sweeping statements, maybe you should try to explain rationally why you feel aggrieved. Wait until you're in a calmer frame of mind. (Do as I say, not as I sometimes write.)

Calmly :

1. Shutterstock displays a privacy policy on its website -stop.

2. They don't respect what is written in this privacy policy-stop.

3. Therefore, this is a mock-up privacy policy-stop.

What else could be said ?

Again, too many vested interests in this forum (too many people getting money from some dubious stocks companies) to be objective with this type of complaint.

If that was aimed at me, I have no connections with SS. I don't work for them, I don't submit to them, I have no shares in them. I have no axe whatsover to grind on their behalf. TBH, I'm always interested when someone says they are not the most fantastic thing since sliced bread. But you need to provide concrete facts.

Sure, it makes sense but I will give the same answer, please try it for yourself to see how they handle your privacy there. I don't want to write a very long story here and also, legally I am not supposed to write about it in case of lawsuit.

But please, don't take my word for it, just try it and keep us posted after your experience.

Most of them have this policy of keeping image for a very big amount of time. And yes, for Alamy it's even 6 month as well !

The general excuse is to have the time to negotiate for an image that was in the process to be sold  :P ;D !

Ridiculous, as if 10$ images on sites like shutterstock or panthermedia (sic :o) would need 6 month to be negotiated for sale.

Of course, because you quit them , they won't pay you. This is when your sales start to go up  :) ;) :D ;D

Got 9 sales this month so far at Photokor. Incredible increase! Unfortunately nearly all at 18 cents to me. Hate to see more of them selling!

Decision time: Is it better to get a few cents from a low earner with very low rates, or nearly nothing from one with a more decent contributor deal?

If you absolutely need to do micro stock, I would recommend Fotolia. You will get more and at least, contrary to i-stock, shutter... and others, they do have respect fro their contributors.

Well, Ernst, I (for one) am still waiting for further details on how SS has violated your privacy.

Please either explain or quit complaining. Like others here, I don't particularly care for wide, sweeping accusations with no specifics to back them up.

Hey Martha,

Why don't you try for yourself ? Contact these nice people at SS (remind me of some other organisation of the past) and ask them (as a test) to delete your record from their systems.

After, please come back here and tell us in details what happened.

Cheers  :)

We can't know it. This is why some stock sites have become so rich so quickly perhaps  ;).

However, not possible with thousands of images, you can double check with Tineye or google image where your work is online (if it's online).
Only issue: with royalty free, no way to know if it's legitimate or not since most microstock won't give you the name of the buyers...

This problem is solved with Right managed libraries like Corbis or Getty. But even there, you can't really know if they don't trick you...

Again, the microstock model gives all the advantages to the microstock company and  buyers, almost none to the essence and fuel of the system, the contributor.

They can boast to have millions of images because of you only...

The only way to get out of it is to sell your work directly. Then you control price, distribution , and copyright. It would also send the right signal to some market idiots who think a picture should cost 10 cents.

Happy suing.

No vested interest here of course...:-)

Shutterstock displays a privacy policy on its website BUT it's onle there for the show. They scorn your rights, your privacy and your confidentiality. Once you have made the mistake to send information, to register, send in data and details, they won't let you remove it, access it, delete it contrary to what is written in their mock policy.
Not only they clearly abuse the current legislation but they abuse their users, clients and contributors.

They feign not to read or heed your mails, warnings and requests. The only way to deal with these people  (and they are used about it), is the lawsuit.
