iStockPhoto.com / Re: Amounts disappeared from Stats Page
« on: January 11, 2017, 09:38 »
Post I just placed on the iStock/Getty forum concerning the cluster over there. Only posting here since I don't expect it to stay there very long.

I have been on the Internet since before it was called that and have been on the WWW as a user and a developer since day 1. In all those years, I have never seen a single case, either as a user or a programmer, where an old site was crippled piece by piece, rendering it useless, before the new site was released. The way hundreds of thousands of previous websites have handled it is, the old site is maintained in parallel while the new one is developed, tested, then released. Only then is the old site taken down.

Failing that, instead of trying to find usable links buried in a forum on a different domain, minimally, place those links on the original pages where you users would look for the information.

The fact that emails were sent out telling us that the site would be snafu for some months in no way relieves you of responsibility for having done so.

I was confused by the thread on MSG of everyone, not only suspending their uploading, but actively deleting their accounts at iStock before I came here looking for useful information. I have never seen such a complete disregard for the needs of the users, partners and contributors of a website in my 25 years of being a part of this media.

This seems to be where programming in general is heading. Everyone has a cell phone and they are a photographer. Everyone has a computer on their desk and now the business community feels they should run/dictate the IT shop. This is not unique to the stock world, and the only winners are the hackers.

Not just you.. I tried several things - and while Ice Cream and Black Horse bring up some relevant ones, they bring in some not related stuff as well.

(Money? why would 'black horse' bring up money shots? or an Ant?)

I see there is 'black' in the description, so there you go. Quotes around "black horse" is much better for results.

this one for 'ship' though.. bizzar..

Wow. nice digs.

Is anyone else wondering if this embeding code was not compatible with Istock Monday?

Unless everyone pulls their port from Getty, they will not back pedal.

This will change stock. The days of shooting things isolated on white and making money will be over. Probably already have enough strawberries on white to last a lifetime. Agencies will evolve into those that support bloggers and the like with (free) images for the advertising $$ and those that support commercial uses with images for licensing.

At least I hope it does. If these two uses stay mixed, it is the end for the working photographer.

Out for 5 or 6 hours, they come back, but still couldn't manage to remove the Valentine's pic from the landing page.  :o

maybe the deployment didn't go well, and they had to revert??

pure speculation.

As a side thought...

I'm in IT, and lately it seems that more and more the business side of things are driving conversions from legacy (old ) systems to new (windows/web based) systems.

The one thing I have noticed on multiple projects is the objections of the IT people to slow it down or design some redundancy into a project are shot down by the business side.  Data clean up, parallel production, testing and correcting development before going live are things of the past in this new world.

The Project Time Line is KING - and all other considerations don't matter.

This has resulted in some interesting problems when they try to 'go live' with a project that has shown, in testing, to fail miserably but they go forward anyways with the "We Will Fix It Later" motto.

Makes me go hmmmmm...

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia Launches Dollar Photo Club?
« on: February 26, 2014, 15:31 »
Hi all,

I looked into Dollar Photo Club.  It is an affiliate site that is using the Fotolia api program.  The database on Fotolia is mirrored on this site as it is on many other partner sites.  The difference is that Dollar Photo Club isnt available to everyone.  It is an exclusive club (not exclusive content) that is going to be made available to heavy buyers.

The sales from Dollar Photo Club take place through Fotolia (as do all api sales) so your commission remains the same.  It is essentially a giant subscription.  You will receive the same subscription commission you would if the image were purchased directly from a Fotolia member with a subscription.

This is another way to drive traffic to your portfolios and should result in an increase in overall sales for each of us.

All the best,

Mat Hayward

I saw API here and I immediately think of Deposit photos/shotstop.

Are these 'heavy users' going to be allowed to resell the images, while the contributor gets only subscription rate?

edited - I went and looked  - Fotolia has a ton of partner programs.

After reading thru the thread on the DepositPhoto/ShotStop debacle. http://www.microstockgroup.com/depositphotos/the-german-shotshop-reseller-of-depositphotos/ I think it is pretty clear why there won't be any accounting of what was sold/what was paid by the buyer and what was paid to istock, and what was paid to contributor.

They are doing up front deals, and then giving out reduced royalties, and the fall out from the information would be even worse than a 'quiet' clawback.

Seems like the whole industry is just a nest of snakes now. Few exceptions. I would say the only agencies to trust are the ones who are transparent in their accounting.

what a shame.

I'm a total outsider. I wanted to get into the stock industry a couple 3 years ago, but realized I didn't have the skills. Been trying hard to become better, so I've been watching the whole IStock deal from an outside point for a while here.

I predict IStock will be sold again.

I think Getty is going to squeeze all the juice out and then throw the rest away.

They've tried to move buyers over to their other stock sites - how successful have they been? Is this why PP sales are up?

They've tried several moves that make no sense from an industry perspective, but I bet they look good on paper as a positive for someone to buy IStock.

1. no upload limits/quality or key word checks - it's about the total number of images.
2. rebranding so it is new and shiny
3. touting the cost cuts to look more competitive.
4. the amount borrowed against IStock.

Pretty sure those  that have been here forever could point out a ton more -  They may not have realized how bad the coding/infrastructure was and they are dumping money into it because then it will be another 'plus' they can show a potential buyer. They won't put a dime into any remodel of old code to help the contributor, more than likely.

So I think all will get to keep their rate - until the new owners move in.
JMVHO.   They'll do any deal with anyone's images that will gain them more money.  They will make promises they don't plan on keeping because they won't have to. They want to keep their contributors just long enough for the new owners to take over.
