As a Brit I'm very proud of the events that took place last night. I stayed up all night glued to the TV as all the results started to roll in. The people in the UK want change. We invented parliament and democracy in the modern age and yet the EU is the most antidemocratic system put into place. If Brussels and the EU parliament were more transparent and we could elect it's members then I think us Brits would have probably have voted to remain. The EU was initially setup for a free market but year after year they imposed new laws which didn't relate to each individual country.
Both my grandparents fought in the 2nd world wars for our freedom and democratic society. They would have been proud last night if they were both around. The EU is turning into a machine state and once again it's been up to us Brits to save the day for Europe once again. Other countries will go free soon and each country will get back it's originality and freedom.
Errr, EU Parliament is directly elected by the people. Last election was 2014. If you chose not to vote, that's a different issue. But then don't complain about the EU parliament you got.

In a German facebook group a team member said there was a bug they were working to resolve.
We had all noticed that suddenly files where no longer chosen for collection, one artist had 100 files without collection approval, so it looked weird, we couldnt all have uploaded lower quality at the same time.
Eyeem is working to resolve the bug and our files apparently have been approved in the usual way, they just dont yet show up under the collection tab.
I asked if I should delete and reupload files, but they asked me not too, better to wait for the tech people to solve the problem for everyone.

Has anyone noticed any difference in the manner in which images selected for the Collection appear in the Market Dashboard in the transition to the new terms of service? Normally, probably 80-90% of my images were selected for the collection - though some I couldn't agree to because of the exclusivity requirement. I uploaded a batch shortly before the official changeover in terms in mid-May, and I was surprised that none of that batch of images appear in the Collection tab. Especially so, since I have actually started uploading better quality images, and the ones uploaded recently were certainly better than many accepted previously. Is anyone noticing a change in selection criteria? Or is it a reflection that the 'collection' tab isn't updating now that images don't have to be approved?

is there a way to protect photos on eyeem because i there is no watermark there ?
Not that I am aware of - it is a reflection that they are a social media site first and market second. For that reason, I am selective about what I put up there. On the flip side, the collection gets high exposure on Getty, and I get regular reasonable sales for images that otherwise would not be accepted at Getty. Uploading via web is easy compared to other mobile apps, and auto keywording is pretty good.

Love Stocksy, but find it odd that they haven't updated the categories on their home page since around Christmas by the looks of it. Would have thought categories would now be more focussed on Easter, spring, etc. Minor point, but just looks a bit strange for an agency that prides itself on being on trend / ahead of the curve to fall behind in updating home page

(Oh darn, am I having a luddite moment - I was trying to reply to the quote about Klein's Tweet.) I suspect that the real reason he later deleted this tweet was not because he took on board any lack of sensitivity around his comments, but because his lawyers told him it was just asking for anti-trust authorities to take a look at the deal...if a transaction looks like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck (or in this case, a cow), fair chance it is a duck (or cow). Given VCG and Getty's already existing commercial relationship, this whole thing seems to smack of a way to ensure assets are held by a non-US company, to try and circumvent anti-trust laws,

Wonder how that will mesh with Alamy's Stockimo, which is already in the process of being mirrored at Shutterstock.

Ironically, I tended to only upload to EyeEm mobile images that had already been rejected by Stockimo. It seems that they will wind up on Alamy now anyway. Given that, as you say, the Stockimo collection is starting to be distributed through Shutterstock, I may rethink that approach. In theory, it would seem better to get 50% of whatever EyeEm gets from Alamy or Getty, than 50% of what Alamy gets from Shutterstock. Anyway, won't make any decisions along those lines until see how it all plays out over the next few months. Volume through Shutterstock may make it worthwhile. The kind of images that are on Stockimo, and now being distributed through Shutterstock, for the most part would never pass Shutterstock's QC process in their own right, so I don't feel that I am missing out on direct sales through Shutterstock. My concern is more that Stockimo sales (which have been quite good $$$) may disappear if the same images can be sourced from Shutterstock for a fraction of the price. Slightly off-topic I know, but it is an interesting move on Stockimo / Alamy's part.

Have you tried uploading through the website or from your phone? The website has an auto-keywording function. Normally, I don't think much of auto key-wording, but I have to say, I have been pretty impressed with how good EyeEm's is. Sometimes it is off the mark, but a lot of the time it's pretty good. And if images are selected for the collection, then any additional keywording for Getty (and Alamy) is done by them in the background somewhere. As others have pointed out previously, EyeEm is a community first and stock collection second, so I don't expect it to have all the functionality of a stock site. For me, the biggest drawback remains the lack of any watermarking for images selected for the marketplace, and for that reason it will continue to remain an outlet for images I don't care that much about, or which probably wouldn't be accepted on traditional stock sites.

I also received the email. I am pretty sure I read somewhere, either in the email or FAQS, that for the moment the relevant tab for the collection is still labelled "Getty", but it will be changed to "EyeEm Collection" soon. So the appearance of the website is just lagging a bit.

Interesting article. I was curious about this: "Unlike Shutterstock, Offset consumers aren't offered the chance to apply to contribute images to the site. Rather, the team at Offset have been reaching out to photo studios like Good Brigade, but also professional artists and successful features photographers."
Offset do have a link to apply to contribute on their website. I have not done so as yet, but I am in the processes of building a portfolio site to do so (at Offset and elsewhere). Given the comments in the article, what is the point of the "apply to contribute" link then? Has anyone been accepted by Offset applying this way? Or only by direct approach?

I think you can just add keywords to this search.
The eyeem collection is perfect as an example of unscripted/amateurish/overfiltered/instagram content. The crazy, ugly and all the overfiltering are a real bonus, making the content authentic. Artifacts are for smartphonestock, what film is for retrostock. It anchors the file in time.
But how can you predict what will sell among all this madness? I cant, so I just upload what is fun for me and enjoy any sales I get. But the majority of files only sell once, so I have no plans to organise a shoot just for eyeem. I really wouldnt know what would sell, it is really unpredictable.
However, I absolutely love browsing there, I have become totally addicted to the app and I am always experimenting with stackables and filter effects from other apps.
It is really very relaxing and the diversity and completley unscripted real world reality of the images is truly liberating after more than 10 years of stock photography.
I hope they are successful with their own marketplace, they do a great job at community building. The place is just never ever boring.
And finally I have an agency that I can recommend to all the friends and family who want to also "make money with pictures" but are completely overwhelmed with normal agencies and the professional requirements for stock. But eyeem can be joined by anyone, no special skills needed, just point your phone, take the picture and off it goes.
As you can see, I am a fan 
It is nice to have a place like this, in addition to all the regular stock agencies. Just browse, relax and play. Just dont expect too much and go with the flow.
I enjoy EyeEm as well. At the moment, I tend to be using it more than any other app for mobile images, as well as posting some older images taken with point and shoot cameras "filtered up", which might not pass muster on other stock sites. The web upload functionality makes it much faster to upload than some of their competitors. I'm also using their new image recognition software through the web uploader and, I have to say, I am finding it pretty impressive. I have used it on some other sites and its been pretty useless (and more time consuming to then unlike irrelevant keywords). The EyeEm software isn't perfect but its pretty accurate most of the time. My only hesitation in uploading more (or better quality images) is that, because it started as a photo-sharing site initially, large previews of the images are easily downloadable from your profile page. I wish that you had the option to add a watermark to images selected for the Marketplace.

Can someone provide a link to the provision that will take away our rights or changes the current laws. I'd like to read it?

STILL and Remove are apparently important words in the above quote.

This is a report to be provided to the EU Commission to feed into the Commission's own report into updating EU copyright law, due later this year. History shows that the last copyright directive in 2001 was only implemented in a patchy way, differing from country to country. It is also worth bearing in mind that "freedom of panorama" is already vastly different across Europe. It is very broad in Germany, at its most restrictive in France, and somewhere in the middle for most other countries. . For those who are EU citizens (I have dual citizenship so may do the same), and are genuinely concerned, I would suggest that it would be more useful to email, write or call your EU deputies prior to the 9 July plenary session. The irony that the petition, and the original report, were prepared by the German Pirate Party MEP, ought not be lost here
I can't find the original document where something has changed. It's more like they have refused to change and the standrd as we need permission. How is no change, against saving the freedom. Nice blog. You should promote it for questions like this. The pirate party wants no rights for all of us. When somebidy fights for free use of modern archeture and works, they are also petitioning for free use of our photos.
We want to use others design work for free, to sell commercially and at the same time want our works protected from free use? Seems like a contradiction.

Thanks for the compliment. I have been reluctant to do so because don't want to hijack these forums is for, but will keep in mind. I'm very open to suggestions of what else to cover. I believe that the final version of the amended text has not been released. Julia Reda's website has a list of the amendments made, and says that she will post the final text of the report when complete: https://juliareda.eu/copyright-evaluation-report/ There is a map on this page on Reda's site which apparently shows the current position in EU countries, though I can't vouch for its accuracy: https://juliareda.eu/2015/06/fop-under-threat/ It shows that, contrary to what many people might be assuming, only very few EU countries have a broad freedom of panorama right. In many countries it is already limited: either just to buildings, and/or to non-commercial purposes. For those that think having copyright over buildings is something new, well, that horse bolted in 1886 when 3D works of architecture were included in the original wording of the Berne Convention on copyright. It has been progressively been incorporated into national law as countries have adopted the Berne Convention over the past 120+ years. Where the uncertainty and debate arises, and continues to arise, is what rights that gives the copyright owner, and what are reasonable exceptions to infringement. From what I have read, I believe that the proposed amendment came from the French members of the Legal Affairs committee, who are seeking to extend what is already the position under French law (pretty much no panorama rights) and to have that adopted EU wide. Reda was pushing the other way to extend what is basically the position in Germany - which arguably has the most generous FOP right - across Europe. Personally, I would be surprised if either outcome happens, and it is very likely that the status quo will continue in most European countries. The EU weren't able to get the original 2001 Directive on copyright adopted uniformly, so doubt they will succeed now. I think your point is well made that people ought to be a little circumspect and consider carefully the Pirate Party's manifesto. I must say I winced a bit reading comments saying that freedom of panorama ought to be preserved because (a) it is good publicity for the architects and building owners and (b) it is too difficult to enforce. Sounds awfully like the arguments used to argue that use of images should also be free.

I have been with Stocksy since 2013, and I am constantly amazed at their transparency, growth, and commitment to their members. I am making GREAT money with them, more than all of my other micros times 10. I am so happy to be a part of the co-op and I feel very honored that I was lucky enough to get in. I am a working professional photographer and not a teenager with an Instagram account.
Topol, I'm so sorry that you feel like Stocky is a fraud and is giving you smoke and mirrors. All I can say about that is that you should politely excuse yourself and take your work elsewhere. There are many that would jump for joy at the opportunity to be a part of the community.
Well, I love Stocksy. I'm not a contributor but would love to be. I recently needed some images for a website and didn't have what I was looking for among my own images. I contemplated converting some of my microstock earnings into cash to buy some images on mainstream micro stock. I hate to say it, but it was just soul-destroying wading through generic, plastic, and way too glossy happy people and office settings. I know there are great images on micro stock, but it was a very interesting exercise stepping into the shoes of a customer and actually trying to find something I wanted to use, before glazing over with the sheer volume. I wandered over to Stocksy and within an hour or two selected a small group of images that hit the sweet spot. Hopefully one or more of them were contributed by people here.

Another question for Mat. Will the Instant collection be included in Adobe Stock? I see existing Instant Collection images appear to be, but wanted to clarify if that will continue to be the case moving forward?
@KerinF yes, the Instant Collection is in Adobe Stock. As far as I know those images will continue to be added as they are approved at Fotolia.

Thanks Mat! One for the "suggestion box". It would be good if it was possible to access Creative Cloud library from inside Instant, so can upload images from there as well as the camera roll. I often find my iPhone get too full before I have a chance to deal with all the images, so often upload them to Lightroom for later (Snapwire has this feature ).

I noticed for the first time this morning that Snapwire have started distributing images through Alamy. ***There are 4 or 5 of mine that are also already for sale directly through Alamy, which I am not exactly thrilled about. Snapwire do have a "premium" collection which are exclusive and, in that case, I might be OK about the arrangement (although Snapwire are pretty light on info about how revenue is to be distributed in any partner arrangements, which is another gripe). But now I am effectively competing against myself by having the same images available twice (which must be annoyng for customers seeing the same images pop up twice)
I appreciate that Snapwire's terms allow them to distribute through partner channels, and accepted that because I was keen to support a new player with a fair revenue arrangement (50-70% depending upon type of sale). Frankly, I assumed that mainly was to allow them to distribute through Media Bakery which I think is related). However, I am surprised that they have not communicated anything to distributors about distributing through another agency as big as Alamy. It seem almost inevitable that there will be a reasonable number of people who contribute to both. Personally, I would just like to be able to opt out of the Alamy arrangement, but will remove the overlap images from Snapwire if that's the only option.
(I have some other unrelated gripes about Snapwire, but have been willing to put them down to teething problems.)
Anyhow, thought others may like to know
***EDIT - well, I'll be darned. Should have investigated more before posting. It seems that the images I am concerned about have at some stage been designated "Premium" (exclusive) at Snapwire, weeks or sometimes even months after initially uploading. In the meantime, or maybe even before submitting to Snapwire, they had already been loaded elsewhere. Or (bizarrely) there seems to be one copy non-exclusive (Select) and one exclusive (Premium). Since I had turned off notifications, because I just can't abide any more email spam, I hadn't noticed. So I guess this means that it must just be Premium images being distributed on Alamy, which removes my initial gripe. Still inconvenient and irksome to have to go back through images many weeks later and work out where there might be an exclusivity conflict. Since I am not at all keen on exclusivity, I think I will be going through and removing all "Premium" images from Snapwire and stick with Alamy, etc. And drop a line to Snapwire suggesting that give people the option of choosing in advance if they want an image to be considered for exclusivity or not, rather than trying to figure it all out weeks later

The EyeEm Market is now working for the photographer side, and just end of last week I saw the first of my images showing up on the Getty Images site as part of the EyeEm collection.

Hello Michael, I know this is an old post, but since it is now several months since you posted this, wondering how you are finding the EyeEm market on Getty? I have some photos sitting in limbo which have been selected for the Getty collection, but which I have not approved yet. I was waiting for EyeEm to launch their own market, but this keeps getting delayed. Any updated thoughts?

Yes, similar number of images and just had first sale. As with general Alamy, sales are infrequent compared to microstock, but generally higher value. The image I sold was a pretty ordinary one of some cobblestones - sold for $36. My daughter also contributes but only has a handful of images for sale. She recently sold a beautiful image of a beach for about the same amount.

I had one of those awful moments last night: I had an external LaCie 1TB hard drive with 20,000+ photos on it (and some movies) attached to my MacBook Pro, when the LaCie failed. I was in the middle of cleaning up my Lightroom catalog, moving things around from my MacBook Pro to the LaCie, when it happened.
I have known it has not been an ideal set up for some time: I have a MacBook Pro with a relatively small solid state drive (256GB), hence having to periodically move things around between the laptop and external USB hard drives.
Thankfully, I have an Apple Time Capsule configured to run auto back-ups. Unfortunately, the external hard drive died just as the Time Capsule was mid-way through a back-up cycle. I have been able to recover the contents of the LaCie drive from the day before when it was last attached, and have copied these to a different external hard drive (it is taking an eternity).
So, upshot is, I don't think I have lost anything: the worst thing is my Lightroom catalog is now a complete mess because the recovered back-up does not reflect all the re-organisation just before the crash. Once all the images are received from the Time Capsule, I expect it will be a nightmare trying to re-link all those folders/image files in the Library, which reflect the changes made, to the recovered but old file structure.
Anyway, it prompted me to finally do what I should have done 6 months ago: I went and ordered a new 27" iMac with a 3TB Fusion drive, firstly, for increased storage and, secondly, to have a large screen to work on.
I also have a 100GB Dropbox account, but have not been making the best use of it because kept running out of space on the MacBook before I could fill Dropbox, so I mainly use for documents. In fact, had just moved some folders out of the Dropbox folder before the crash, so didn't have any backups there. I also have the free Adobe CC cloud storage, but don't really use that. Likewise, I have 20GB Apple Cloud, but I don't use that for photos.
Anyway, it got me wondering what others do about backup. Hard drive or cloud, or both? How many copies? How often? I was lucky this time, but I think I need to improve my recovery strategy.

I realise that the phrase is carefully worded - it doesn't actually say that you will find only images which you can only get from iStock when you search, but that surely is a strong implication. In the UK's ASA that would be down to what a 'reasonable person' would infer.

this is referring to the DMCA system I mentioned. It is the best cost-effective means of getting infringing content taken down, and partially address the cross-border issues. But you need to do that Whois search on the blogger's domain name, and then write the necessary letter/form and send to the ISP. They are the ones who will take steps to remove it because they have a vested interest in doing so to protect their immunity under the Act.. assuming you don't just want to write to the blogger directly.

Curious, if anyone knows, are whole batches reviewed by the one person or are the images just spread far and wide and then consolidated again afterwards to give the final feedback on the whole batch? Just wonder if reviewers are paid per image, then that may be an incentive to take shortcuts and just bulk code some batches? There does seem to be a remarkable similarity in the reason selected, even when the images are diverse (from completely different shoots and conditions)
