Since iStock changed its Asset page, it no longer shows file Download count - which I used to research images and concepts.

Are there other sources for researching image downloads or popularity?

thanks :)

Thanks for coming here to answer questions - it's appreciated. I did get the e-mail and obviously will be very happy to see things pick up.

I had suspended uploading when things appeared to stall, but obviously have a lot of other stuff to upload if that makes sense (I'm on vacation at the moment, but once home again).

Good luck with relaunching the agency

You guys should hire this woman as a strategic consultant. Trust me on this.

look at the list on the right. ImageBrief is not even on it and for good reason

This definitely seems like the lead-up to the release of iStock September Self-Destruct v3.0, as they drop everybody's royalty rates to the flat Getty 20%.

I have been anticipating this for years. But wondered if they had the balls to do it. Lowering all exclusives to 20% will kill or greatly damage this segment for them. When they use the term "unification", it implies 20% for all...well, to me. I hope I am wrong but locking down accounts is an ominous sign.

From Getty website...

How Unification impacts contributors
Unification may affect parts of how you work with us, because it touches almost all of our systems, including content upload, statistics and royalties. We will contact you in the coming months when specific changes affect you directly, but were sharing the background now so youll understand those changes in context.

...royalties? uh oh.

generally it is best not to over-grade or over sharpen your footage.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Getty Portfolio Review?
« on: July 12, 2016, 03:03 »
I got an email for a portfolio review from Getty.

It would be helpful to know how big your portfoio is and in what collection are your images on getty?

Why would that be helpful?

iStockPhoto.com / Getty Portfolio Review?

I got an email for a portfolio review from Getty. But I am always wary of ulterior motives with this company.

Has anyone participated in this review? Was it beneficial?

email reads in part...

Hello there,

We wanted to share this feature with you first, as your relationship with us is special. It would be a pleasure to work closely with you to improve your craft, increase your potential, and benefit from the tremendous creative research that is at your fingertips

General Stock Discussion / Do you archive your RAW files?
« on: April 04, 2016, 20:09 »
I have always archived my RAW files as well as my uploaded JPEGS to a few hard drives. But I have been thinking if I really need to keep both since I cannot recall using my RAW files for anything after uploading as JPEGS.

I had a guy really get in my face when shooting a home for a RE agent with my drone. I was over the listed property but he was the neighbor. I was calm and professional... but he kept playing tough guy...

then i snapped and started screaming in his face and he freaked and turned into a kitten and apologized so I would calm down LOL

this if from a friend who has worked for this company...

I have done business with this company in the past. They are legitimate in the aspect of being an actual company who will pay you the amount stated for the work described. On the other hand, you will mostly shoot very low end properties and you have to constantly badger them to get paid (they promise 30 days but average 120+ days). The photographer turnover rate is very high due to the way they run their business (which is probably why they have resorted to recruiting on a micro stock site). I would describe my experience with them as negative.

Should you work with them? As long as you never give them priority over any other job on your calendar (they cancel/reschedule a lot), you don't take any job that is more than a couple of hours away from you (reduces out of pocket gas & food expenses where you wait forever for reimbursement), and you absolutely would not have to depend on this income to pay your bills (because you won't get paid on time).

somebody needs a hug  ::)

21
that day rate is very low. does it include just shooting days or shot and post processing days? how much are you charging the client for a shoot? how long is a typical shot list. you really should put a FAQ on your site

22
you should post that on flikr sites

23
Well, it's a derivative work of your own files. Good question. I think it's not allowed but it's a question for IS.

I thought about that but don't want to get on Getty's radar. Never good thing. My contract is for exclusive photography not video so i don't see how it would violate my contractual agreement but Getty makes up rules as they go along  ::)

24
This raises a question... Let's say you are Exclusive for photography at iStock but you take your stills into FCPX and do the Ken Burn effect on them and sell them as video to Pond 5 and SS... would that be a problem?

25
for stock, the equipment, settings and post processing learning curve is not too steep. a few online videos tutorials will do it.

but be prepared for LARGE files and LONG uploads unless you have HIGH SPEED upload bandwidth. most uploading will be running while you sleep at night.

it can be fun but unless you master smooth camera moves of unique content shot very well you will not earn much. it is not like photos where even mediocre stuff can sell.
