Sales have been bad this year anyhow - down in the order of 50% from last year before these changes. Will remove 12K videos if nothing changes.

2
Hi Mat,
what about video?
Any plans to allow editorial it for footage as well?

Same question from me... are you doing editorial video too???

VideoBlocks / Re: How to leave as a contributor
« on: April 12, 2019, 00:29 »
I used to get a few sales each month.
But now nothing this year.

My sales dropped from a peak of $1500-2000 a month there to about 2 a month now. Really not worth continuing there.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Pond5 "Good News"!

Why do they think that giving us a title like "good news" is going to make us less angry when they're actually shafting us? They just proved that they're exactly like every other stock agency that's done the same thing.

Adobe Stock / Re: Editorial Video in Adobe?

Indeed. We are not talking about newsworthy stuff just non released people and property. Also trademarks. That sells a lot in SS...

Thanks everyone for chiming in on this important topic.  Love the feedback and do know that we're always evaluating what can be done to make our service and our contributors more successful.

Out of curiosity, how many people here are talking about video vs photos?

Thanks,
Dennis

Editorial video would be good from my perspective - its a huge part of sales on P5 and SS.

I got sale yesterday and the price still at $49.00!!!

I'm not sure what's more surprising - getting the sale or it being at the old price.

Rather than an increase in sales which Storyblocks suggested would happen though these changes, mine have dropped a further 50% from when we were getting 100%, so down to about 10% of their peak. The agency is now firmly in the "why bother" category. Seriously considering deleting my portfolio there.

7
So, have the buyers migrated to Adobe or is it 'just' supply outstripping demand, or ... ?

My impression is that there was some search change. The drop started suddenly this month, and may have finished on the 27th - seem to have had a few days of normal sales. Looks like August will finish at about 50% of a regular month.

8
It's been an absolute disaster for me this month, down more than 50% on any month in the last few years (and down something like 95% on my best-ever months.)

Just about sums up my month too. Terrible month on SS so far.

« on: August 17, 2018, 08:10 »
I think in August we are already at the point where we sold more $1.50 than regular video sales. GG SS.

Same here, August so far on Shutterstock is looking dismal. Have gone from very consistent sales to 50% below the worst month in the last 3 years. The last time sales were this low my portfolio there was only 1/20 its current size.

10
Got mine too - I assuming that after applying the code the normal billing is put on hold for a year?

. . . these clips are for web or mobile application only. They can only be streamed; downloading and broadcast usage isn't permitted. This restriction has been designed to protect your earnings and give you an extra chance to make money.

Thanks,

This is not true. Anyone can right mouse click on the website and download the master file. The videos are not protected.

See this:
https://forums.submit.shutterstock.com/topic/93927-150-video-sale/

The downloading is beside the point - how else have our clips been used in the past, other than for people to watch them? Streaming is just another technology for broadcast via the internet. A stream can reach millions of people - probably much more than broadcast, why should that technology get different rates?

12
Any updates on whether there are still packages available? I'm sure people would be more motivated to upload if they actually knew that they had a chance of getting something rather than all of them having been effectively given away before the promotion even started.

How come all the top stock footage creators I know of, don't seem to be blogging or vlogging, or on Instagram or anything else I know of.

Actually I think I know the answer...

Indeed - the vloggers are the ones barely earning $100 a month yet offering to teach newcomers their secrets. Great insights to be had there.

14
Still uploading but I'm in the same boat with sales.  None last month.  That's a first with Videoblocks.  Might have to do with the rebranding to Storyblocks.  They could've lost some SEO or something.

Could be that but sales seem to have been trending down for about 12 months now. For me they're about 25% of what they were for the 12 months before that.

VideoBlocks / Re: SB tries the 'ole "partner sales" game
« on: February 03, 2018, 15:01 »
It would be a bit cheeky using an example with the partner taking 20% if it's not physically possible for them to take 20% on whatever sliding scale they're using.

It would, but nothing in the history of this industry suggests it will be otherwise.

16
If you have very unique clips, one-of-a-kind clips, you may hurt your own sales. But most of us don't have that.

Some buyers shop around, absolutely, but far from all. If a buyer is very concerned about price, they will simply find a similar enough clip and not buy yours at all.

Buyers who are not too concerned with price tend to value their time more, and buy where they are already buying.

I have sold assets for up to 8-10 times the price on certain sites for years, and they outperform the cheaper ones.

---

You are very right about the double penalty regarding search ranking, but I still believe it pays off to spread your assets around as much as possible.

Another very good argument against selling to VB is of course that if EVERYONE would do it, and they would gather most of the good clips in the world, it might render the other sites useless.

If that were to happen though, their acquisition costs would be so high that they would have to charge $10,000 or more for the membership, and only big buyers needing lots of footage would go there.

---

I don't think it's an easy yes or no answer.

I'm not suggesting not selling there at all, at their normal price the royalties are competitive, I'm saying that selling the rights for the videos is a really bad idea, especially at the rate they're offering which is a tiny fraction of what buying the rights to content should cost.

There's a huge difference between being able to license an unlimited number of clips for $149 per year (or whatever discount they're currently offering - frequently free for 7 days), which is what VB gets the rights to your videos for the $25-$35 that they seem to be offering and a single license at $49.  It just takes a single buyer even through videoblocks itself to choose the free version of your clip (which by definition all buyers there have access to) instead of licensing it or a similar clip for the contributor to be worse off. Unless you think you're never going to sell the clip or similar clips on their platform, you're worse off by selling the rights at this price.

If you ever later want to sell the complete rights to your portfolio, having given away rights to some part in perpetuity allowing re-license will also significantly diminish the value of your work to other potential buyers.

I received an email from them:

"Thanks for reaching out. Were incentivized to sell the assets at a higher price since we share in profits, which means more money for you!

Content for the Consumer License will not be sold for less than 49$, which is the guaranteed price floor and you will make 60% after the platform has received their share. For example, if the Third Party were to receive 20% then you would receive $23.52 after a sale. If this were a Single-Use License you would take home $9.12. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!"

I followed up with another email asking if the third party's take is always 20%, or if it could be more. If it's only 20%, it sounds like an okay deal.

Third party: 20%
Storyblocks: 32%
Contributor: 48% of sale price

Edit:
Received another reply:
"The prices will vary for each integration, but our goal is always to offer competitive prices points to buyers while ensuring the majority of the revenue we collect goes back to the artists. We are always looking for new ways to drive sales to our contributors and that is something we are strongly focusing on in 2018."

Not the answer I was hoping for. If the percentage is going to be different for each partner deal, I'm not convinced to join.

Thanks for that, I'm also opting out.

These clips have made many times their offer at other agencies...

And they would continue to do so if you sell the rights to VB.

You're basing this on what data exactly? From my experience talking to buyers a fair percentage do shop around and those that do know where to go for the cheapest content. Sales lost on Pond5 or Shutterstock will hurt you double, because ultimately the sales there will also affect your search ranking on those sites. If as you say on another thread VB is outperforming pond5 and SS, its much more likely that your cheap prices on videohive and videoblocks subscriptions are eating up sales there.

19
I got a similar offer for a larger number of clips at a somewhat higher price, but also said no. Long term the offer doesn't make sense for the artist. Its a one-off payment that reduces your clips to virtually valueless elsewhere in a contract that you can no longer withdraw from. These clips have made many times their offer at other agencies, and even if its just a single license per clip that's lost, its a worse outcome for artists. At the moment much of their membership library is of poor quality, if that changes, then it presents a threat to our income from other sources.

Videoblocks seems to be struggling for sales recently. Possibly diversifying into photos has come at the expense of marketing video content. I'd suggest that its best to avoid these kinds of offers - video takes much longer for initial sales to come through, but long term sales are very lucrative, unless you cut them off at the outset.

I had 4 x 4K refunds lately. That was... well, a little disappointing :) Unfortunately this is not the fist time.
I guess there is still something to do about the hardest big refunds for stock sites.
There are number of indicators showing that the sale is most likely fraudulent, you can continue if you like:
- there are several sales in a row of a relatively new buyer on the same day, often within a few minutes;
- this buyer had zero to few purchases before (most likely);
- the sales are the highest resolution files available;
- the files have nothing in common (although the latest refund files did) and scarcely made for the same project.

I also just had another batch of 4x4k files. At the moment the indication of fraud is they're buying 4k files at all - the only "sales" are fraudulent ones.

21
Had the same thing happen several times. Seems to me they need a better system for authorising accounts if they've just signed up. Pretty obvious that its deliberate fraud to access our content.

22
In a case like this, the relevant artist shouldn't just contact Etsy, they should Seek the identity of the seller and seek damages for breach of contract & require an account of profits from them. This isn't just a DCMA situation - its a situation where Etsy has paid out royalties that should be due to the original copyright holder.

Pond5 / Re: The first Pond5 Global Partner is here: Adobe
« on: May 02, 2017, 01:47 »
"royalties comparable to selling directly through our partners"

Given that my only sales so far on Adobe have been for $7 and $2, which I didn't think was possible, then this is particularly unattractive.

Like others, I have a very bad feeling about this arrangement.

Dissolve / Re: Dissolve lowering price on my footage
« on: April 21, 2017, 04:37 »
Just got a mail from Dissolve-  that since my clips are solf for $49 on other sites (they obviously point to VB)
they are adjusting the prices on my HD versions to match the same price.

I wrote to them that the $49 price reflects a price for subscribers who pay a monthly fee.
Without that fee the price is the same ($79)

am i missing something or are they wrong??

What's more important - the price that the customer pays, or the price that the artist receives?

Dissolve is a third-rate agency with low sales that pays contributors a lower percentage than the leading video agencies. The bottom line is if they reduce your prices and you keep selling there, you only hurt yourself. Get them to delete your portfolio & cut your losses.
