I don't understand the map thing. What do I care in which country my stuff gets sold? It's ever changing so it doesn't do anything statistically, it's not useful for any market research...at best it's just a visual gimmick used as dashboard filler.

For those of us who live in countries which don't have an income tax treaty with the USA, having the map AND the last 20 sales listed showing where they were sold around the world is very useful.

For every image/clip sold outside the USA I don't have to pay 30% withholdings to the IRS, so it's a great resource to know how much I will likely receive at the end of the month as SS doesn't keep any info regarding sales in/out of USA in the earnings tabs.

Adobe Stock / Re: New design is confusing and awkward.

As a Footage only contributor, I have to agree with what's been said.

1) Views are our lifeline - without those, we have no feedback whatsoever regarding the clips. (yes, downloads are a nice statistic, but they are few and far between on footage - we need to see what is being looked at to help us determine what is in demand).

2) Ability to choose thumbnail.  Why this hasn't been a top priority for years I have no idea.  I have lost count of the number of pure black/green clips in my port due to the "3 second" still rule, or whatever they use - a good thumbnail is fundamental to selling a clip.

3) Layout - I don't need big thumbnails of my clips showing me my downloads. I need an easy to read columnar format (such as the old Fotolia dashboard or Pond5) showing me the relevant data such as views/downloads/review status etc.

Hope you can address some or all of these soon.

Yes, Baldricks Trousers  - exactly that.

I have contacted VB/SB about this issue as I live in a non treaty country and SB charges me 30% witholdings on ALL sales.

I have advised  them the following (initially 2 years ago and again last week):-

1) The IRS guidelines state that royalty payments are subject to 30% withholding if they originate from a US source (and no tax treaty exists).  All sales from entities outside the USA should be treated as foreign source and NOT subject to witholdings.
2) I also advised them that Shutterstock/Adobe/Deposit Photos adhere to this way of processing withholdings.

I was told on both occasions that their Tax Team would be informed, and "the team is audited by a top firm to make sure we are following within guidelines. We want to operate being as helpful as we can to contributors and will do everything we can to improve every area of the experience. However, financial and tax operations are more defined, despite how other companies may approach them, so this is an area which may not be as flexible."

The open ticket was then closed and nothing more was done.

As we do not receive any details on the sales, we have no idea how much witholding is valid and how much could be potentially challenged (sales outside US), so I don't if this would be worth doing.

Noticed the exact same problem myself today!

All clips from February 14th 2017 to today have had the thumbnails reset.
If you go into the edit page, it still has the blue rectangle over the correct thumb, but the image it uses for the display thumbnail has been reset.

I've emailed support and they are looking into it.

I've had the same problem as the OP.
I live in a non treaty country and VB/SB tax EVERY sale at 30% EVEN though it is ONLY US based client sales that should be taxed (I checked this on the IRS website).

I had an email conversation with Mike from VB a couple of years ago and explained that Shutterstock/Adobe/Depositphotos etc all charge only on US based clients, but he said there was nothing they could do! I imagine doing nothing now is all they can do or someone would be liable for a large refund to all the non treaty contributors who are being charged (and have been charged for years) this 30% in error.

So, no, it's not only you!

Pond5 / Re: Pond5 Limited Licensing Program

As I understand it, the LLP is as follows :-

1) It is NOT available to standard customer/clients/via the website.
2) It will ONLY be available to curated, selected customers who work in time sensitive fields (projects that have limited life spans - one day, a week etc)
3) The LLP is AUTOMATICALLY available to ALL POND 5 contributors AS STANDARD. That is, you don't have to do anything, you are opted IN as part of the new contributor agreement (which was linked to in the email sent today (Nov 8th)).
4) The prices for these sales have NOT been revealed.  Only that the Contributor will receive the usual 50% of whatever price they get. But, since these are one use sales, any further use (in a different project?) will require the client to make another purchase, giving the contributor another 50% of whatever the rate is.

In my opinion, since this LLP is NOT available to just anyone directly through the website and the new clients they are going after apparently don't use normal footage clips anyway due to volume and cost, opting in to this scheme shouldn't hurt anybody's regular downloads and may even be beneficial..

I will keep opting in and see how it goes.

Pablito - I was wondering the exact same thing recently.

I have sold 224 footage clips on Fotolia and still have to sell another 776 to move to silver rank !
I cannot believe that a Full HD or 4k footage clip download is the same as a photo download! (In the ranking terms)

It is absurdly unfair to footage contributors.

It is similar on Shutterstock - 30% flat fee for clips and NO increase in royalties no matter how many you sell.

General - Stock Video / Re: VB withholding tax
« on: June 13, 2016, 12:51 »

I noticed the same problem a few months ago and I contacted VB.

Basically, I live in a country that doesn't have a treaty with the US, so I pay 30% withholding on all US based sales (this is on SS, FT etc).  On VB, their policy is ANY sales, no matter where in the world the client is, is deemed to be US income and subject to withholding at 30%.

I did some looking around on the IRS website and it seems to me that only royalty sales where the usage is WITHIN the US should be deemed "US Source income", for sales originating OUTSIDE the US, the income should be "Foreign Source" and not subject to withholding.  This is the system Fotolia and Shutterstock uses (and some others).

I pointed this out to VB (and mentioned that if it is good enough for SS and Fotolia, it should be good enough for them) and was told they would speak to their finance department about it, they were very polite, but in the end, nothing changed.

So, for me,  I have to pay 30% to the US government for sales on VB, no matter where in the world the client purchases it.  This I think is wrong, but they will not change their policy.
