General - Stock Video / 4k in 50p
« on: August 31, 2018, 17:45 »
Hello, fellow filmists!

My latest camera acquisition allows me to film UHD 4k at 50p, here in PAL land, as opposed to the usual 25 fps. However, I am struggling to establish whether this is any more or less desirable to stock footage purchasers.

Anyone with any experience of selling 4k video at 50p?

Thanks guys. More power to your lenses.

Hi spudgun, may I know the 4K video quality is it the same when you shoot in 12mm and 32mm? or when shoot in 32mm quality will become badly? And how long the max length for 4k video? Thanks

Grace. The quality is down to the LENS, not necessarily the focal length. The kit lens, 12-32mm is excellent, in my opinion in, across all values. Here in the UK video time is limited to 30 minutes but is unlimited in US.
PS: Other than the lower light capabilities of Sony cameras, I consider panasonic to be FAR superior in image quality.

Yep, agreed. It's not so much a question of whether an agency would want to accept a slowed down version but more a question of whether or not a potential BUYER would want it. Certainly, if the original clip was shot at a high frame rate, 60fps or even more, any potential client would take that into consideration for slow-mo potential.

That said, if the clip is really only viable by virtue of it being slow motion, then that should be the only clip uploaded.

Grace, rest assured this is an amazing little camera for stock footage. I own it, as well as the GX80.

The point about low light is valid but at the end of the day, don't try and specialise in footage that needs to be shot in the dark! That said, there are workarounds and footage is usable with pretty high ISO's.

In my opinion there isn't another camera with these specs and ability for anything like the money.

Happy shooting.

Greetings, fellow shooters. Is anyone using Lumix cameras for 4k Stock Footage??

I have both the G80/85 and the GX80/85, which produces quite stunning MP4 4k video files.

This IS an acceptable file format for most footage agencies, but I know they do prefer .MOV files.

Is anyone uploading MP4 files or do you use software to convert? Is there a big, noticeable difference in file size or quality?

Big thanks, bug kudos and more power to your lenses!

i assume you all saw the IS admin update 18 hours ago? on IS forums?

Actually I didn't no.
Given that they hold my materials and make their living from it, (alongside everyone elses), it wasn't part of the deal that I had to go looking through forums, announcements and updates if and when they elect to stop telling me what my account balance is.

I might just tell them to f**k off and cessate my account. Only I won't TELL them, I'll make an admin post on my blog.

Sorry. So am I misreading the situation here?
I am unable to find my current balance anywhere within iStock or Getty Images. Not under My Account, Payments, Contributor Tools or anywhere.

Am I totally missing something, or is the company which makes its fortunes off the backs of others, for some reason electing to obscure or simply stop reporting sales?

Perhaps they're so hard up they've invested everyone's earnings on some 'get rich quick' scheme and will update peoples stats accordingly?

Happy New Year to all.

Except to istock.

They can get f**ked.

You're correct. Go-Pro image quality isn't that good but the VIDEO quality certainly isn't bad and I know of quite a bit of footage shot with this camera being sold on Stock sites.

If you're actually planning to merely SNORKEL, you're actually unlikely to get much saleable or usable shots as you will be predominantly shooting DOWN on top of any fish/fauna; undesirable shots.

Greetings, fine compatriots and fellow artists.
I like to think myself rather astute, alas; I am struggling no end to make out HOW, exactly, I have earned $105.00 from a single HD footage clip, apparently sold as a 'Clip Pack' sale?

Congratulations! :)
As far as I know it's extended licence sale, very nice thing :) It's either for some big project (movie, ad) or for sensitive use (tobacco, overweight). By the way try google image search with a screenshot in a month or two, we've found one of our clips used in Vodafone ad this way :)
Has anyone sold 4K with EL on Shutterstock?

Thank you Irina.
Amazing food footage, by the way!  8)

Thank you, kind people; yes I kind of suspected that there may be some element of extended license or something but Shutterstock certainly don't elaborate on this or make it clear in my sales advice; it merely says 1 sale 'Clip Pack'.

Thank you for your kind wishes, and I sincerely hope you guys experience the same good fortune very soon, (but don't hold your breath!)

Can't get to grips fully with Shutterstock's logic here. I KNOW that many, (including myself), have suffered the ignominy of earning only 4 dollars or so for selling a footage clip but talk about going to one extreme to another. Of course, it may well be an error and it may well be remedied.

Comments or thoughts hugely appreciated.

Kindest wishes,

Hoping you've sorted this out now. If NOT, the 'Local Tax office number', that Videblocks insists on having is actually your National Insurance number! It took me two days on the phone to the Tax Office and increasingly vexed emails to Videoblocks to resolve this!

I use adobe premier elements and have the same work flow as I used with HD.  I just save them at the 4k resolution.  Not had any rejections and they are recognised as 4K.  If MPEG Streamclip doesn't do 4K, there are other free converters out there.

Thanks for this, buddy. I will look into this. Most stock agencies need the file in Quicktime format. Do you do this straight out of Elements??

MPEG Streamclip has UHD parameters (3840 x 2160).  I shoot UHD, then downsize to 1080P Apple Pro RES in MPEG. Never had any 1080P rejected for not being true 1080P. I just converted 45 UHD's yesterday with Mpeg Streamclip.  Easy peasy.

Thank you very much for this, Mantis. But can Streamclip output 4K? I need he final material to be in 4k. What NLE do you use?
Best wishes

Greetings, fellow artists.

Would love to learn of any tips, hints that you guys are using regarding your workflow for 4k editing. Have successfully sold HD clips for several years and have been asked for 4K material.

My camera will record 4k in MOV (LPCM) / MP4 (LPCM) / MP4/AVCHD: AVCHD Progressive. I am planning to edit with Videstudio Pro, a product I have used for years and like.

I have hitherto used MPEG Streamclip to convert the rendered files into Quicktime MOV, as required by all my stock agencies, but this obviously isn't going to work with 4k files!

I know some people have been editing 4k files in a HD timeline, and whilst I appreciate this will produce  stunning HD files, I'm guessing the Stock Agency servers won't recognise them as 4k files!

Thoughts much appreciated.
