Shutterstock.com / I'm in !!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: February 05, 2009, 16:53 »
3rd try and I'm in. Woohoo !

My advice to anybody who want to apply there : go around the forum to get info about the submission process there. It's a bit particular. A couple hours of research can save you the 2 months I wasted (1 month delay between each "try").

I'm uploading right now, and hope I'll experience the famous "shutterstock newbie effect" !!!

Man, that was more exciting than an EL sale  ;D

New Sites - General / Conditions on pixmac keywords
« on: February 02, 2009, 13:45 »
Hi everyone,
I haven't read the fine prints of pixmac (I know, I know, I should...). I wonder if they have a policy concerning the keywords they produce for our images. If I want to reuse these keywords on another site, is it ok ?
I mean, they don't have a copyright of sort on the keyword, but if I upload 100 pix there, then embed the keywords they wrote on the IPTC of my files (without added value from my part), then upload these 100 pix to 5 other sites keyworded, do I infrige on some rule or policy ?

Newbie Discussion / Quick tip request...
« on: February 01, 2009, 11:37 »
I'm about to start my first shoot of objects on white background. I just assembled my "strobist" setup from different sources.
I have 3 speedlights, 2 shoot through umbrellas, 1 silver, 2 plastic diffusers for the flashes (you know, you plug it directly on the flash), 3 tripods. White seemless background rolled down from my mezzanine (from 2m high) and another couple meters on the floor.
I thought I could try and shoot big objects, cause less people do so when then only have light boxes.
As it's my first try, it would be cool to have some general technical guidelines as well as some suggestions of subjects.

I don't mean to steal your niches or ideas, just a few guidelines would be helpful for the beginner I am.

For example, I don't know if for some objects I should use some kind of stand, hang them from wires, whatever. Seems like only lying on the white paper might not be very flattering for some subjects.

General Stock Discussion / Signing a model realease to yourself ??
« on: February 01, 2009, 05:50 »
Hello, in case you take photos of yourself (timer or remote shutter) and want to sell them, can you sign a model release with you as a photographer AND model ?
Sounds silly, but without a model release the photo wouldn't get accepted. Or would it if you mention that in the "remark for reviewer" field ? (this field is not present in all site, however...)

Zymmetrical.com / Is Zym actually sometimes usable ?
« on: January 30, 2009, 13:10 »
Oh man, it was worse than being back to my first modem... (not talking V90 here...) I don't know how I even completed the registration. The site was so slow yesterday for my first visit (and registration) that I have big doubts I'll start upload there. Is it usually better ?

After registration, I was so frustrated that I couldn't find their upload page. Could anyone give me the ftp address ? Do we use the same user/pass there as in the site ?

Also, how bad is it to finalize an upload ? Clicking 20 times and going through 4 pages per photo a la IS, or is it faster ?

Shutterstock.com / SS initial evaluation
« on: January 30, 2009, 09:11 »
Hello,
I got rejected twice from SS, but will try again soon !
I gathered some interesting info about the initial submission on different posts here, thanks all.
I have a doubt though. On one post was written that the photo for which no rejection reason was given were in fact ok.
From the evaluation, I receive a table with each photo on the left (with an id), then status ("not approved" for all of them) and for 4 images out of 10, there is an explanation of rejection on the right. Nothing for the others.
Does that mean that the ones without reason were in fact ok, or does that mean that they were so bad they shouldn't even have to bother give a reason...

Featurepics.com / Requesting Pricing suggestion
« on: January 28, 2009, 06:50 »
Hi all,
I'm all new to featurepics. I uploaded a bunch of photos, and I'm happy to see that I can set my prices there. I don't have much experience in this though, so it would be helpful to have some suggestion.
What I uploaded is exactely the content of my freshly opened yay account (these guys accepted 100%!). I am "totony" there.
Could you tell me what price you suggest for this kind of portfolio / quality ?
I know it's not a one size fits all, and I should tweak the price per photo depending on its potential, but I'd like a baseline from which I can go up and down from for some photos.
Thanks in advance,
Totony.

Adobe Stock / Am I stupid ?
« on: January 26, 2009, 08:10 »
Hello everyone,
From the messages I read here about fotolia, it seems that nobody here has exclusive photos on fotolia.
I started stock photo by putting a limited selection (about 30 or so) in 5 or 6 sites, to see how it behaved. Left that simmer for more than a year. I like to think of it as a study period, although it was pure laziness not to upload for so long.
In that period, fotolia was the only site with regular sales (I was not on SS though), and seemed like a winner in my case. So I proceeded to upload exclusive images there. First, there was the immediate increase in revenue due to the more generous royalties (50% instead of 33%), and the anticipation of a quasi doubling with the bronze level, which seemed easily attainable.
Currently, my strategy is to first submit to fotolia (with exclusivity), and what gets rejected is submitted to all the other agencies. This way, I'm not upset with fotolia random rejections :-)
I've not shot photos with stock in mind yet, I'm only submitting a backlog of what I consider "sellable" photos. So my rejection ratio is high on fotolia (a bit more than 50%). So the approach is quite balanced for the moment. As I begin shooting for stock, I anticipate higher acceptance rate, and then I'll possibly have to change my approach.
I'm now at 99 sales on fotolia, meaning I'll reach bronze level quite soon. I'm a bit puzzled. On one hand, I'm happy to see my prices double there, but on the other hand seeing all of you choosing not to upload exclusive content to fotolia makes me think I'm on the wrong track.
Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp !!
Thanks in advance for your feedback.
Anthony.

PS : Sorry for the long post, next time I'll be faster, promised...
