Hi All,

If I ever have a question regarding the legal issues of stock photography I always speak with Nancy Wolff. Nancy is the leader in understanding how to stay safe when producing stock content. Enjoy the Vimeo Nancy is the bomb.

Hi All,

I got a message from Facebook yesterday that they would like to offer me the opportunity to sell my stock content through Facebook. They have also partnered with Shutterstock to be able to use SS content in adds. I disregarded the message and now wish I had copied it as many are asking me what is going on. I was wondering who else might have gotten the same message and what do you think about their offer? Here is a link I found on Google explaining some of the news. http://techcrunch.com/2013/08/22/facebook-shutterstock/

Thanks,
J

Hi All,

I wanted to send a word out to everyone here about some new changes at Spaces Images / www.spacesimages.com. We are now accepting location lifestyle imagery from our contributors. Until now our collection has not offered lifestyle but with our agencies asking for lifestyle location more and more we feel it is a good time to add this new dimension to our collection. We are distributed to over 90 of the very best Macro agencies in the world, you name them and we distribute your work through them. We offer a 50/50 split as well as free key-wording and small retouching done by the best services in the industry for both our RM and RF collections. We have just completed new contracts with all of our distributors offering the highest return percentage possible. If you want to give Macro a test we would love to take a minute to talk over the details. I look forward to any and all replies.

Thank you,
Jonathan

General Stock Discussion / Micro agencies breaking the rules?
« on: April 18, 2013, 11:06 »
Hi All,

I don't know more than what I just read but it appears that there might be some rather wicked things taking place in the Micro world. This is about the top Micro sites doing some pretty naughty stuff. If anyone has any information I would love to hear more. I don't want to jump the gun and say this is a fact as I only have this one source. If anyone can help add some insight I would appreciate it. Here is the statement and a link that has been added to join force against the issue at hand. The issue lies with Fotolia, Istock, and Shutterstock according  to the post on Facebook.

Russian service http://sellimage.org/ allows to buy images without registration in microstock. There are a number of people buying the image by subscription and then transferring the files to users who paid the money service. Sounds like resale of images already purchased but I am not sure.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Off Topic / 100 reasons to be happy
« on: January 06, 2012, 18:17 »
Hi All,

I spent a couple of days this holiday making a short video on the people that live on the streets of Seattle. Interviews with the homeless folks that are just trying to make it from one day to the next, shot on my Iphone. I asked 100 homeless people what they were happy for in 2011 I think you might find some of their answers inspiring. Please remember all the people you pass every day and what we might be able to learn from them. Thanks for watching and please share if you can this is a non profit project.

Hi Everyone,

I was curious if people are interested in sharing their sell through rate from Isotck. That is the percentage of your files that have sold at least once on the site in their lifetime. I have a 77% sell through rate if you want to share please add to the list.

Hi All,

I was wondering if any of you have had your credits dropped this weekend. I just pulled my page up and it says I am now getting 15% after I have already accumulated 40,000 credits which I thought was supposed to leave me at 18% for the coming year. Can anyone help out on this issue? I have sent Istock a message but have not heard back yet. Can anyone explain what happened did I not understand that I had a year to make it top 40,000 credits to keep my 18% but today I am at zero credits and a 15% return. Thanks in advance to anyone that can shed some light on this.

Cheers,
Jonathan

 Hi All,

Just finished reading todays post by Jim Pickerell. It is a strong well made statement on the future of Microstock. The story really focuses on how there is still room to be big in Micro and uses Daniel Laflor as an example. Great read to finally here that stock can still make you a strong living if you know what you are doing. Well done Dan my hat is off. I cannot post the letter as it is a payed site but maybe Jim will catch this and share the letter with all of us here. Great read Jim thank you.

« on: December 02, 2010, 16:54 »
Hi All,

I have just seen work done by a photographer that uses the Sony AIFA 55 for all his HDR work. I was blown away, 14.4 cmos sensor 10801 video with jack for extra mike and a 5 frame HDR option the lens is interchangeable and shoots raw files. Check out this link and if anyone is using it please chime in on your experience. Here is a B & H link http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/692508-REG/Sony_NEX5K_S_Alpha_NEX_5_Interchangeable_Lens.html

General Stock Discussion / HDR: Why all the controversy
« on: October 18, 2010, 11:50 »
Hi All,

I just read a big article in PDN this month about " The Controversy over HDR'S " Maybe I am missing something here but what is the worry. It is a new tool that can and cannot be used depending on the persons interest. It was painted as being gaudy and useless by some as well in some other articles I read. This is a great tool and if you don't want your HDR'S to look surreal they don't have to. We use them a lot for interiors but we keep the image looking photo realistic because that is what I want.
Michael james was quoted in the article and I think he makes wonderful very salable images, for his clients or stock.
Trey Ratcliff makes images that push the limits of the software and I enjoy looking at his work as well and he has a strong following. You can just ask him or check how many hits he gets on his site. I just purchased his DVD series to see if I could pick up some nuggets of wisdom and sure enough I have. Can someone explain to me why it is any different than all the other changes in photography that have helped enable photographers to create what they desire over the history of the invention of the camera.
New bee's do have some pretty horrid stuff out there but so did everyone when Photoshop first hit the market. Now all these years later some still don't understand the use of PS but they are learning. Am I missing something here or do some people just have a tough time excepting new information and change. I made a post on an ASMP blog the other day to answer a17 year olds question. I explained he might try HDR to solve the problems he was sharing and I got hit with several statements about how it is ruining our art. I don't get it. What do you all think?

General Macrostock / Big growth in my sales at Getty
« on: May 20, 2010, 15:34 »
Hi All,

This entire year each month is getting better and better at Getty RM/RF. I have not added anything but some motion clips in over a year and I just had one of our biggest months in two years. Sales are growing rapidly I sure hope it continues. Does anyone else see their Macro work increasing in sales? Love to hear if you have.
This past 2 months in Micro my sales have dropped for the first time since I joined. I hope that doesn't continue.

Best,
Jonathan

Hi All,

My company has just launched a new Macro RM/RF collection titled Spaces Images. You can find it at www.spacesimages.com to see a portion of the work. We are excited to start this collection with the support of Corbis for our launch. We are however multi ditributional so our RM and RF will be carried by many distributors across the globe.
The collection is much different than my usual lifestyle work actually there is not a person in any of the work. The collection is based on the environments where people live, work and play. After spending 12 years analyzing our personal sales of now 15,000 images we realized by far our best sellers were locations without people that were Property Released when need be. That was the birth of the concept and after a year and a half of work we are now representing 40 wonderful photographers and are launching with 4,000 images.
We offer all our contributors a 50/50 split so that photographers can continue to be able to afford making stelar photos in this tightening economy. If anyone here is interested in being part of the team please contact us throgh the web site. We already have a couple of MSG members signed and they are exceeding all expectations making the collection stronger every day.
If you are interested in just learning more please drop me a PM and we can discuss in more detail. No cost to the contributor, we cover all key wording and distribution and you provide us with the finished image and a Property Release where needed, simple as we could make it for the contributor. I hope to hear from some of you, there is a great deal of talent on this site and it is a way to break into the Macro market if that is of interest. Also no expensive models to deal with :D

Jonathan

Image Sleuth / My images being sold on Flickr for wallpaper ?!
« on: January 19, 2010, 17:24 »
Hi All,

I found our images being resold by another party on Flickr for wall paper is that allowed?. They even changed one shot just a little bit by adding some window blinds. One Photo is of my two dogs laying on my couch in my living room, so I am pretty positive it is mine. Found it through Tin Eye.

General Stock Discussion / The use of a square image
« on: August 20, 2009, 11:54 »

Hi All,

We have spoken in the past about using the square format to offer your buyer a vertical option or a horizontal option from the same image. Less work on your end, higher sell through rate, largest thumbnail on the site and lots of copy space. here is an example of one of my square images that I think covers all those needs. Hope this helps.

General Stock Discussion / Question about traffic to blogs
« on: August 16, 2009, 19:07 »
Hi All,

I don't have a Blog but I have noticed many of you do. Cheers to your efforts and sharing of info. I was curious if you could tell me how many hits a month is good or standard in this photo blog business. Is it a million hits or 10 million or if there is any expected hit ratio you guys hope for. Anyone that can offer any advice I would surely appreciate the feedback.

Best,
Jonathan
