General - Stock Video / Stock animation newbie
« on: May 11, 2015, 08:14 »
hello,
i've been working with stock vectors before, now trying my luck with stock animation. So far it's terrible - about 100 works - zero sales on SS and pond5. I've started learning After effects just several months ago, and i know that my animations, gently speaking, are far from masterpieces so far and i perfectly understand that microstock is not the area where you get results fast...but still, i didn't expect so bad results. is it usual to not get any sales with more than 100 works online? so far for me it seems like waste of time, not a business.  Could anyone advice something - what am i doing wrong here? I would appreciate constructive critics.

hello,
I've heard that some microstockers are successfully shooting stock footage with their DSLR cameras. So far i'm complete newbie in creating footage, and i have no experience with it. But i'm thinking to try it. I have Pentax K-x with DAL 18-55mm lens. I know it is pretty amateur equipment .... But anyway, how do You think - can it create footage with enough technical quality for stock agencies?

Photo Critique / Critique needed - Istock vector test
« on: April 12, 2013, 07:53 »
Hello.
I've been trying to pass Istock vector test for a long time. I have two images approved and i need one more. I had lots of rejections already and since last rejection i had to wait 1 year to be allowed to try to pass the test again. If this image will be rejected i guess i'll then have to wait 2 years so its probably my last chance.  I'd be grateful for some critique.

« on: September 24, 2012, 07:43 »
Hi,
is there anyone who create and sell adobe flash designs in microstock? how is Your luck/earnings there?

hello,
One of my friend's hobby is photography. It is quite original type of photography he is doing because he is taking photos while flying with motor hang-glider (he is pilot himself). Those photos are really beautiful and artistic.

This photographer is currently interested in opportunity to start doing microstock . But he doubts about his photos potential in microstock because it is totally different then usual stock photos. I am vector artist so i couldn't give him much good advices. It would be great to hear opinion from photographers. What do you think about these photos? Is it worth to start seriously working in microstock agencies with this kind of photos?

GraphicRiver / Graphicriver looks good
« on: July 10, 2012, 04:27 »
I am a microstock contributor. I create and sell mostly vector images. Some time ago i was intensively looking for a new profitable agencies where i could upload my vector works. One day in one microstocker's blog i've found good responses about Graphicriver. I've never heard about this agency before so i didn't expect much from it, but anyway i've decided to try it. Now it's about a year when i am contributor in this site and i must say i'm really happy to be there :) Let me share my experience with it:

http://graphicriver.net/?ref=vecart - agency that belongs to Envato group, together with photodune.net, videohive.net, themeforest.net and other sites.

Advantages:

Good sales - probably the biggest and main advantage of this site. For me it is strong no.2 earner. Only Shutterstock does better for me.
Steady sales - different microstock agencies has different search engines. In this agency number of sales rises very significantly for several days after new works are uploaded. After that it falls down a bit but still remain good. Even if new works aren't uploaded for a long time - sales doesn't drop dramatically and remains steady.
50 USD payout minimum- small payout minumum is always advantage.
Good contributor support - some time ago i had some questions about using Graphicriver, so i wrote letters to it's staff. Staff was very helpful, polite and answered quickly.
Different format works - You can submit there not only vector illustrations, but also PSD works, also logos, print templates, t-shirt designs etc.
Great stats displaying - i like thorough sales and referral stats and anyway contributor account is easy and comfortable to use.

Disadvantages:

Time-consuming file submitting process - For vectors (i don't know how for other formats) You have to prepare three different files for each design: 1)  80x80 px size JPEG thumbnail image 2) 590 px width size JPEG preview image 3) zipped file with high resolution JPEG file, vector file, and some additional formats (optional) inside.
Preparing these files requires additional efforts and time.
High rejection rate - i don't know how about other contributors, but i get a lot of rejections there - more than in other agencies. Most common reason for files rejection - design didn't fit Graphicriver's high quality standarts.

Other features:

File pricing - File price is set by Graphicriver's reviewer. It is often 2-5 USD for RF vector work zip. Sometimes this price may be different. I get 33 percent earnings per sale. This percentage also depends on how many sales contributor made overall.

So i can conclude that graphicriver has it pros and cons, but anyway it is very professional agency with big potential and it is worth to try.

If some of other contributors sell works here, it would be nice to hear their opinion ;)

Off Topic / Wow, nice surprise :)
« on: April 07, 2012, 12:32 »
Hi,
recently searching in the web i've found something that made me smile :)

http://www.imdb.com/media/rm1224130304/tt1687277

it's a link to a "Insight" 2011 hollywood movie page in imdb. And i saw something familiar to me in the poster of this movie :) It's one of my first microstock vector illustrations, which i've created and uploaded when i've started working in microstock in 2009 december. My illustration:

General Stock Discussion / low earners - good income
« on: February 14, 2012, 17:07 »
Hello,
Which of "Low earners" category (in Microstock Poll Results)  sites brings best profit for You? We have quite long list there of "low earners" in the right side of webpage and probably most of these sites earns only cents for contributors... But for some contributors some of these agencies are good earners and even better then some middle tier or top tier agencies.
For example, for me (i create mostly vectors) good agencies from "low earners" are graphicriver, vectorstock (about the same earnings as Dreamstime). Graphicleftovers have some sales and are getting better.
Please, share Your experience: what do You mostly upload (vectors, photography, video...) and which of the low earners is best for You?

New Sites - General / Anyone selling in iclipart.com?
« on: February 07, 2012, 14:11 »
Hi,
Are there anyone who sell photos or graphics in www.iclipart.com? I noticed this agency in one of the microstocker's blog:
http://www.graphicgravy.com/2011/09/vector-microstock-power-rankings-%e2%80%93-august-2011/
It is described here as quite good earner. But i can't find many information and resposnes about it on web.  If someone of You are selling thare it would be great if You shared Your experience. Is it worth to try?

New Sites - General / How is Your luck with vectorstock.com ?
« on: January 30, 2012, 12:41 »
Hi,
Several months ago i started uploading vector images to vectorstock.com. The beggining was slow. But now it is getting better and better with earnings there. The commisions at first were 0,25 dollar for one image sale. But when i reached 500 downloads mark (bronze level) - commisions became 0,30. Sales aren't big, but stable and growing up steadily. i guess soon i will reach 50 usd/month mark there.
In this blog i see mostly negative comments about this site because of small vector price, small sales... But anyway i guess it is not so bad there because i see a lot of new vector artists in vectorstock. I even noticed one of the best microstock illustrators Anja Kaiser there.
How is Your experience with vectorstock.com? Are You happy with Your earnings?

Hi,
recently i've found on this blog very interesting site of one of the microstocker's - http://www.veoelmundo.com/ .  In this site photographer Holger writes about how he visits many different countries of the world and during these journeys he makes photos for microstock.
I think this kind of job - traveling photographer sounds absolutely awsome. Are there any other travelling microstockers? I've heard that travel photos are very succesful in microstock, but can this kind of bussiness payback - i mean  all travelling expenses should be huge - plane, train tickets, hotels or hostels, food, etc. Is it possible for those photos made during these travels to earn enough to compensate all those expenses?  Of course, i realize that it strongly depends from the skills of the photographer and from what countries are visited... But anyway, if You do this it would be interesting to hear something from Your experience.

Photo Critique / Portfolio critique
« on: December 11, 2011, 17:07 »
hello,
Could i get some critique for my stock works portfolio please?
http://www.dreamstime.com/portfolio.php?clientun=Archibald1221&pg=1&page=1&items=200
I'm working with microstock for about two years now. I have about 900 vectors in my portfolio but my sales are quite small. For example, Dreamstime with more than 900 works brings me only about 15-20 dollars in a month.  Most of other vector contributors have much bigger sales with even much smaller porfolios. I think maybe my illustrations style isn't professional enough, or maybe i'm choosing wrong subjects.
What do you think? I'd like to get some advices. :)

Shutterstock.com / vector submission
« on: August 10, 2011, 13:14 »
Hello,
I'd like to ask those, who are submitting vector images to shutterstock.com: Does many of You submit vector illustrations not only as vector eps files, but also are submitting the same illustrations as separate jpeg images? I personally used to submit vector only in eps format, but recently i've noticed that many contrubutors started to sumbit raster versions of vector file. Is it worth to do that?

Hello,
recently in Ebay and Amazon.com i've noticed graphic design stuff cd packs for sale - photo textures and various theme vector elements collections.
Are anybody of You selling Your designs there? Is it succesfull?

Computer Hardware / Laptop for work with graphics.
« on: June 07, 2011, 09:14 »
Hello,
I usually work with graphics  - mostly with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop new versions. A little bit with adobe flash. I'm looking for new laptop. i'm interested in this one:

http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/vostro-3750?c=us&l=en

How do You think - is it powerfull enough? will it work well with earlier mentioned programs. Even when artworks i'm working with are quite complex?
My budget for this computer is very limited, so i'm not looking at more expensive computers than this one :)

Hello,
Microstock sites are good way to earn money from design, but nowadays there's a lot of other alternative ways to do that. The mots pupular alternatives for microstock agencies i've found already discussed in this forum were:
Zazzle.com/Cafepress.com
Earning from design blog
Selling stock directly

But what about other ways and sites? For eample:
deviantart.com - way to sell your artworks
99designs.com - design marketplace
crowdspring.com - designer's competitions
brandstack.com - design marketplace
redbubble.com - sell canvas prints, t-shirts, other designs
spreadshirt.com - create and sell t-shirt's designs
threadless.com - sell t-shirt design

There are just several links. Are anyone working with these mentioned above or other similar agencies? Are You succesfull there? What are earnings there comparing with microstock agencies?  It would be great to hear some opinions :)

Illustration - General / problem with eps scaling
« on: May 04, 2011, 17:25 »
Hello,
If we place vector illustration, (EPS) to Adobe Photoshop as smart object - we can scale this illustration to any size we wish without quality loss and then save it in jpeg format, in desired resolution... This is great Adobe soft feature and it usually works fine, but recently i've faced a problem with some of my vector illustrations there - when i place those vectors to photoshop, it looks awful - iillustrations are jaggy, pixelated and very low quality... I'm using Adobe illustrator CS3, Adobe photoshop CS3, vector format - eps10.
What could be wrong there? Maybe i've made some mistakes drawing vector?
Example of vector with this error:
 http://www.freevectorsonline.com/2011/05/messy-background/

I'd be really grateful for some advices.

regards,
Lukas

Illustration - General / What is wrong with this vector?
« on: March 08, 2011, 01:44 »
Hello,
I'm a contributor in microstock sites. I'm working mostly with vector graphics. The problem is that Shutterstock quite often rejects my vector drawings for this reason: " This file is damaged. Resave from the original and resubmit." Sometimes there's another similar reason: "Glitch--File is corrupt or will not open properly, or there was another technical problem". Other agencies (fotolia, dreamstime, 123rf) accepts these files without any problems, and those files files in my computer are working perfectly well. I'd like to know, what could be wrong with these vector illustrations? maybe i am doing something wrong - for example i'm using too many transparent objects, effects or is it something else?

Download this vector file from my webpage:

http://www.freevectorsonline.com/2011/03/abstract-background/

Does this eps work on Your computer well? can you open it with Your software?
I'd like to hear some opinions :)

hello,
It's already about a year when i'm working as contributor in microstock sites. I'm mostly working with vector illutrations. Everything is going fine .. but i have one problem - i still didn't pass istockphoto vector exam. I've failed multiple times. Two my vectors were accepted, so i need one more vector to be accepted and i will become istockphoto contributor. But also i know that when my vector illustrations were rejected last time, i' ve had to wait 6 months to submitt new works. So if i'll fail again, i guess i'll have to wait one year till i'll get another chanse. This is very important to me, so could You please advice me  - which of my works has better chanses to pass exam? What other advices could You give?
