I do this from time to time, it's always amusing to see where your pictures end up!

Just found someone on eBay selling prints of one of my photos. I didn't even realise this was allowed?

I'm sure this question has been asked before but what's the strangest place you've found one of your photos?

iStockPhoto.com / just started with istock
« on: November 22, 2015, 18:18 »
well i've finally decided to try some other agencies instead of just ss and dt, i have a port of around 1400 on both and while ss does quite well dt is almost pointless- i stopped uploading there a long time ago.

How should i expect sales to be compared to ss once is once my port is fully uploaded? is it as simple as the poll results to the right, expect about half of what i get from shutterstock?

Also how long are review times at the moment, im eager to get my first few hundred reviewed

cheers, phil

General Stock Discussion / can i use the same model release
« on: November 25, 2014, 08:53 »
This may be a daft question but, i have several sets of images from various trips to the mountains with my hiking partner, would i be ok to use the same release for each shoot or do i need a different one for each time?

Thanks, Phil

Computer Hardware / Looking for a new backup system (raid1?)
« on: October 29, 2013, 07:28 »
Ok, well im looking to get a new system in place to backup my photos and get them all arranged as my files are spread across 2 hard drives, if one fails i loose half my shots since i started photography 5 years ago, if we get robbed or the house burns down i loose the lot!

i've been looking into a raid 1 setup for home and then using my current externals to keep at a friends or relatives house incase we get robbed etc...

i only need 3 tb of storage so ill be looking at a 6tb raid1 so 3tb on each drive as they are mirrored.

what could you recomend for around the 300 - 400 (gbp) mark, i dont mind spending a little more if it means i get exactly what i want...

i've noticed that western digital do one for about 290 but anything after that and it seems your looking at the 'big boy stuff'

Ps my computer knowledge isnt the best so dont want anything over complicated ;)

Basically it seems like its going to be something like http://www.amazon.co.uk/Personal-Storage-Mirroring-Western-Digital/dp/B006TD68GM/ref=sr_1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1383049210&sr=1-2&keywords=raid+1#productDetails

or the more expensive option of  http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-058-SY&groupid=1657&catid=2400

General Stock Discussion / UK contributors, tax question
« on: October 21, 2013, 07:06 »
I'm a little confused as what do do with tax etc.

I currently work a full time 'day job' as an employee for a large company and do microstock on the side as a hobby (between 50-120 gbp a month, though this is gradually increasing)

Now, am i supposed to declare it or not?

I'm a little confused on this matter and obviously dont want the tax man knocking at my door one day...

I've been into stock for 3 years on dt and 1 year on ss, finally on ss i've 'broke that wall' and the last 3 months (and already this month) i've smashed the payout threshold (probably not that amazing for some of you i know) but its a great feeling ;D

I've always kept my stock earnings in a seperate account and thought i'd spend a bit, splash out and upgrade from my canon 5d mk2 to the mk3

good decision! just need to keep at it now...  8)

General Stock Discussion / help with model releases...
« on: October 16, 2013, 06:12 »
right, i have never really had much of an interest in shooting people, though i have recently been asked to help out my friends other half with some modeling/ dance portfolio shots,

Being a good friend i havn't asked for any money (and the fact that i havnt touched a studio scenario since college 4 years ago so will be a bit rusty) i have asked in return that i can have a model release so i can also post them on stock which she's fine with.

So, i have a model release etc but do i need to get a scan of her driving liscence aswell?
any other things i need to do?

General Stock Discussion / more or less keywords
« on: September 28, 2013, 07:17 »
I'm not sure if anyone knows but what i'd like to know is for example:

1. i have 15 solid keywords for an image

2. i have 40 keywords including the 15 mentioned above with other maybe slightly less relevant keywords

If someone searches for one of the 15 keywords mentioned above, which image would appear higher in the searches?

I hope this question kind of makes sence! also how many keywords do you guys aim for per image?

General Stock Discussion / where to go from here...
« on: August 15, 2013, 18:07 »
Right, as it stands i've been in stock for about 2 years, i don't tend to shoot specifically with stock in mind, its my hobby so i shoot what i enjoy but its always a plus when i can make a bit on the side to fill the car with fuel for new trips or buy new gear...

I started off being exclusive on dreamstime then left a few months later to try with the highly regarded shutterstock where i am making a payout every 2 months with 700 photos and not making much at all on dreamstime with over 1000 photos

Now, i have 1000's of untouched photos which i am gradually sifting through and editing (over 1tb) but before i start on those do you think i should start uploading to the likes of istock photo, fotolia, depositphoto, 123 etc?

how do peoples sales fair to those of shutterstock? and also how strict is their reviewing process, i think i got about half accepted on shutterstock than i did on dreamstime...

Phil

well, i have always used each website to keyword each photo but now i want to upload to several i need to think about keywording in a program so i only have to do it once.

What do you use to keyword, and is it 'metadata' or 'keywords' is it possible using adobe bridge?

Cheers

General Stock Discussion / your model release forums?
« on: January 31, 2013, 12:19 »
Hi all, well so far i have managed to be in the 'stock circle' for just over  year now and with 1k pictures i don't have any people shots in there! - and with a friend just having bought a lighting kit i thought i may aswel give some people shots a go...

Now i know most of the sites have model release forms on there but is there just a generic one somewhere on the web that doesn't have dreamstime etc written allover it?

Cheers, Phil

General Stock Discussion / w-8ben help please
« on: November 10, 2012, 07:41 »
hi guys, this tax form thing on SS is mind boggling, and hoping you could help me out.

Stuck on sections 6, 7 and 8, to do with -

6. U.S. Taxpayer Identification Number ssn, itin, or ein
7.  Foreign tax identifying number, if any (optional)
8.. Reference number(s) (optional)

anyway not entirely sure on these parts, basically im just your average guy from the united kingdom with an average day job and doing this on the side for a bit of extra money.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Shutterstock.com / gutted by the appoval ratio - 3 in 94????
« on: November 06, 2012, 15:09 »
Well i recently had 90 images pending, and only 3 got accepted, the vast majority for 'poor composition', now i'm no professional photographer but im pretty sure i can compose a picture correctly and my acceptance has never ever been anywhere near that low.

Is there a way to flag it up so i can re-submit or do i just have to bite the bullet and move on (they have been accepted at other sites)

Phil

Dreamstime.com / anybody else having poor sales
« on: October 18, 2012, 07:00 »
Only 4 sales so far this month compared to last months 34 and the previous month 32...

I have not uploaded anything in 2 months as i have been putting all my time into other stock sites,

do you think the lack of sales is anything to do with me not uploading?

Shutterstock.com / opting in again
« on: September 17, 2012, 11:22 »
well my dt exclusivity ended on the 14th which is then i opted in on ss, i have 270 online with another 100 pending aproval at the moment and am yet to have a sale. how long does it normally take for the pictures to be listed in the searches?

General Stock Discussion / image resize...
« on: August 24, 2012, 17:34 »
well i am awaiting to leave dreamstime exclusivity and am looking at getting all/as many of my pictures accepted onto ss, they seem to be really picky when it comes to everything and had 56/154 accepted, a few were down to focus issues which i thought was crazy as i have reviewed them up at 100% and find them really sharp.

Anyway i hear a few people on here resize photos to avoid this so what kind of dimensions are we talking?

everything i shoot is on a 5d mk2 so the image size is currently at 5616 x 3744, what would you resize them to?

19
I am aware that there is a post already floating about regards leavving dt exclusivity but this is slightly different  ;D

I am currently with dt and thinking of leaving exclusivity, i have been uploading a few shots to ss (but offline) and it seems that about 50-60% of my shots are getting accepted there out of the ones at dt.

i have nearly 1000 shots at dt so in theory i should have around 500 accepted at ss.

with only half the amount there would i see any money gains over being exclusive at dt?

my current earnings at dt range from $25 - $60 per month plus my 20c per aproved image (not loads but i'm always uploading new shots, around 30 - 50 photos per week)

obviously over time i'd be going to several other agencys but for now i would be concentrating on ss as that seems to be the key...

General Stock Discussion / rejections at different agencys
« on: August 08, 2012, 07:49 »
I'm currently on the fence about leaving exclusivity on dt in search of more money.

i have around 870 images with them and 1140 in my 'stock folder' on my computer which gives a guide to my current acceptance rate.

i recently submitted 156 pictures at shutterstock and had 53 accepted, are all the other agencys out there as hard to get pictures accepted as shutterstock?

General Stock Discussion / Changing agencys
« on: July 30, 2012, 14:26 »
Hi all, I'm currently in the process of leaving exclusivity on dreamstime now i have 1000 pictures with them, and plan to upload that 1000 to other sites in the hope of generating more income,

Obviously asking peoples income is rude so would anyone be willing to give out percentages of which agencys earn you the most, as im currently deciding which sites to sign up for.

Cheers, Phil
