Twice now (and I had a tiny port on there), once in June 2016 and again today, I've received notification that a photo of mine was sold on 500px. I removed my entire portfolio from there well over a year ago now.

As I've closed my shop on the site, I have zero visibility of the sale nor any way to actually retrieve the money short of another email back'n'forth with them.

After the first sale, I emailed them and was told that this sale was via a Distributor and that they took longer to process which is why there was such a big delay. I'm struggling to imagine that there's this long a delay on this tiny sale (I made $0.90).

I don't believe 500px remove photos even after you've deleted your port. They can continue to make money but make it difficult for you to claim your share (I was eventually offered a payment after I emailed them). You lose control of these images entirely.

I originally uploaded a lot of my more "arty" less microstock photos to 500px back before they joined the microstock market. I removed them precisely because I didn't want these particular images on the microstock market. But be warned, 500px do not honour your wishes or your ownership of your photos.

Zazzle Content Review have emailed me saying that:

Design contains an image or text that may infringe on intellectual property rights. We have been contacted by the intellectual property right holder and we will be removing your product from Zazzles Marketplace due to infringement claims.

All my designs with this photo on it have been removed. The photo is absolutely mine (http://www.silken.photography/-/galleries/landscapes/-/medias/ecb52352-6ad2-4533-b60e-01211b9a5082-winter-sunset-in-iceland), taken in 2011.

Has anyone else ever had this? Any advice on the best way to prove that the image is mine?

I have responded to the email saying as much but I'm wondering what other options I have or if there's anything else I should do. I'm in Australia if that makes any difference.

Does anyone have a feel for whether sales on 500px are affected by how "popular" your images are?  Ie is an image with a higher current or past pulse more likely to sell?

I've been lax and it's really about time I put together my own photography website and gallery.

I work in IT and I'm perfectly comfortable maintaining a self-hosted website, however I'm no web designer and practically I think it'd make more sense for me to start with something on Wordpress or similar where I don't need to spend days setting up, and I can choose from an existing layout and customise from there rather than have to design something from scratch.  I don't mind paying for this.

Does anyone have any recommendations?  Or ones to avoid for that matter!

General Stock Discussion / Found a niche!
« on: September 25, 2014, 08:59 »
But as I generally don't shoot people I'm not really in a position to take advantage of it.  So for those of you who do, here's a niche for you to consider.

Feminism: http://www.womenyoushouldknow.net/feminism-looks-like-according-stock-photos/

And if anyone here took those photos, please re-evaluate (or research!) what feminism means before applying that keyword to your image.  Female model does not = feminism!  :o

I primarily shoot landscapes and wildlife.  I currently have a Canon 7D which I'm increasingly getting fed up with, and a Fujifilm x100s which I love and carry with me every day.  I want to replace the 7D with another interchangeable lens system, but I'm torn.  I always thought my next camera would be a full-frame but I want more fps than the 6D and I can't afford the 5DmIII and upwards.

My x100s has given me a taste for what some of these newcomers are capable of.  Focus peaking! I friggin love that.  Small and light - why carry around a beast?  A typical photography day for me starts with me standing still for hours following by a lot of walking around trying to capture the local wildlife - we get a lot of birds around here especially - so I like the 7D's versatility there.

The 7DmII is even heavier and has nothing that exciting apart from the auto-focus system.  Do I ditch Canon entirely and go with a newcomer?  My research a couple of months ago led me to the Olympus E-M1 but I really should have another look at what's out there.  Has anyone else done similar already?

Print on Demand Forum / Crated Discount - how it should be done
« on: September 19, 2014, 18:43 »
Crated are running a special offer for all customers at the moment, $10 off any print.  What's really nice is that they're not taking this discount out of contributors' pockets, but taking the hit themselves.  Refreshing change.

Cameras / Lenses / Fuji Finepix x100s - thoughts?
« on: July 29, 2013, 23:32 »
I got sucked in by my desire to have a top-notch carry-around camera and all the good reviews and my pre-order came in yesterday.  So far, so good, but I haven't had much chance to really play with it as I've worn the battery down twice already, and I have to do this other small thing called a paying job.  Anyone else looked at one or picked one up?

Off Topic / @earth_pics: Anyone know about them?
« on: March 24, 2013, 20:16 »
@earth_pics on twitter and pics_earth on instagram post many gorgeous and interesting photos from around the world every day, but I can't see any attribution given, and they didn't answer me when I tweeted them asking when the photos come from.

Does anyone know about these accounts and where they get their images from?

I'm not accusing anyone of anything, or trying to get my own images on there, I just find it weird that there's no credit at all given or much information about the accounts themselves.  I've seen images where I was genuinely interested to see who the photographer was but had no way of finding out.  You can save these images at about 800x600 too, not great quality but fine for web use.

Photo Critique / Request for critique
« on: February 24, 2013, 20:57 »
I don't know any other professional photographers so my feedback has come from lovely yet biased friends and family.  I'm learning a lot from MS rejections and reading critiques of others, figured it's time to grow a spine and ask for opinions on mine  :D

I'd appreciate any thoughts on my work, areas in need of improvement etc.  Thanks!

Canon / Repair or replace?
« on: February 07, 2013, 01:24 »
I'd really appreciate some opinions, I have no fellow photographers I know near me to chat with!

I have a beloved Canon 550D/T2i that I've put through the wringer since it was given to me about 2.5 years ago.  Recently the shutter died so I put it in for repair.

The repair quote has come back at $391 (shutter repair, and the whole outer body needs replacing as the rubber grip has almost completely come way).  That's such a big chunk of money that I'm wondering if it would be better spent on a new camera.

I think I want to stick to ASP-C for now, as I have a couple of EF-S lens that I can't afford to replace yet (although I dream of a full frame one day) and I suspect even the cheapest is out of my budget for now.

I have been doing some googling but I'd love some fresh opinions - would you repair or replace?  If replace, with what?  I'd rather not spend more than about $700 if I can help it, but could probably stretch to $900 or so if it seems really really worthwhile (and cash in some incoming birthday money!).

Print on Demand Forum / Brightening images for print on demand?
« on: January 19, 2013, 22:07 »
I'm sure we all know that images look brighter on our backlit computer screen than they do on paper.  When I print for myself, I often find I need to brighten the image considerably, so much so that it often brighter than I'd really like on my screen, but great on paper.

Do you brighten images before uploading to Zazzle or FAA, or do those companies take that into account when they print?
