General Stock Discussion / Does anyone submit to Snapwire?
« on: February 25, 2015, 12:25 »
Hi,

I heard about Snapwire recently, they're a royalty-free photo agency that sell your images for up to $100 with 50-70% photographer commission, but the main reason why they're becoming popular is because you can upload photos from your phone. In fact it's heavily pushes (obviously their USP). As a result photos on the site are normally pretty awful, in terms of quality as well as their visual aspect.

They do let you upload DSLR photos though, and with royalties so high, and some photographers listed as elite (with pretty poor portfolio's) I'm wondering whether this is an opportunity to get in early whilst the site is still growing and have a decent shot at earning good money.

I've sent them an email asking a few questions, but if anyone here uploads to them/has any experience I would really appreciate it if they could share this.

Thanks

I'm relatively new to Shutterstock (although not to microstock), and recently I came across the "On the Red Carpet" program. I was just wondering how successful others have been at using the program to gain access to these kind of events.

I've submitted my application for the 6 nations rugby tournament in the UK, so hopefully i'll get good news.  :)

Any experience with the program would be great.

Off Topic / New Zazzle Store! :)
« on: April 18, 2014, 12:36 »
Hi everyone,

I started my Zazzle store about 2 months ago and it seems to be coming together quite nicely. Any critique/comments would be greatly welcome- especially from those who also sell on the site.

Thanks a lot guys,

Cameras / Lenses / Slow VC on Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 VC
« on: March 01, 2014, 11:55 »
Hi,

I recently went on a trip along the garden route of South Africa with my new Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 VC lens. I didn't have a laptop out there with me so i couldn't see the photos at 100% after i'd taken them. I was happy with them.... on the trip.

When i got home a large % were slightly out of focus. Since i have been home i have found this review of the lens (http://www.kenrockwell.com/tamron/17-50mm-f28-vc.htm), where he said this:

"This Tamron's VR/IS/VC system works only if you have the time to wait a moment before you snap each and every photo. There is a huge flaw if you make a photo before waiting a second for it to settle down. If you snap a photo without waiting for the VC/VR/IS system to settle, it will blur your image worse than if you had no VC, VR or IS! This is because this Tamron's VC system jumps as it locks and unlocks, so if you don't wait a moment with your finger half on the shutter for it to settle, it will blur your photo in the process of settling! Nikon's VR and Canon's IS systems don't have this problem. This blurred a lot of shots for me before I figured this out. Therefore, this is a horrible lens for news, sport, action and people shots unless you turn off the VR/IS/VC system. If you don't, and if you shoot at a moment's notice, the VC system will blur many of your shots!"

I'm guessing the only thing i can do really is turn off the VC as i didn't specifically think i was rushing the shots.

Has anyone else got this lens? Any work arounds?

Cheers,

Selling Stock Direct / Photobox Gallery- worthwhile?
« on: December 30, 2013, 12:49 »
Hi,

I'm just wondering whether any of you sell via Photobox gallery? (http://www.photoboxgallery.com/)

I've been looking at putting my photos out a little further than just the standard microstock sites (SS, IS, DT), and was looking at a few other sites like Fine Art America, Zazzle and Photobox Gallery. Does anyone have any advice as to whether they are worthwhile?

Thanks

Shutterstock.com / Opting back in
« on: September 28, 2013, 10:20 »
I recently uploaded photos to SS, but i had to wait for my exclusivity period with Dreamstime to end so i took the photos offline (but still being on the database- opted out). My exclusivity has ended now, and i "opted back in" a few days ago.

It's still saying that i have 0 active files though, and i'm starting to think that i should probably contact support. Does anyone know how long it takes for these files to go back into the system?

General Stock Discussion / Waiting for 30 day period to expire?
« on: September 08, 2013, 06:14 »
I've recently asked to leave exclusivity at Dreamstime and i've just been accepted at Istock. I know that i have to wait 30 days (about 2 weeks left) before i can sell photos on other stock sites, but would this agreement be breached if i uploaded photos to Istock but didn't make them public during this 30 day period?

I've heard and read that this is possible to do with Shutterstock (where i should be hearing back from my application soon) but i can't seem to find anything related to Istock. I obviously don't want to breach my agreement with Dreamstime but 2 weeks is a long time to wait if it is possible.

Thanks

Shutterstock.com / "Trademark" rejection reason
« on: August 24, 2013, 06:54 »
I recently put forward my application to become a contributor for Shutterstock- i got 6/10 accepted ( :-[)

Anyway, one of the submitted photos (http://www.dreamstime.com/royalty-free-stock-image-map-tokyo-japan-image25564636), was rejected for "Trademark--Contains potential trademark or copyright infringement".

I can't see a reason for this from looking at the photo again, as there are no distinguishing features of this that relate it to a certain map/atlas organisation.

I have quite a large set of map photos like this and if each will be rejected for this reason that would be bloody annoying. Can anyone see any potential trademark breach that i am missing?

I also didnt realise that you needed credentials for editorial photos (one of a rally and the other of a ferrari flag- http://www.dreamstime.com/stock-image-ferrari-f1-flag-image15126821). Would i really need to upload proof to show that i had "permission" to take a photo of a ferrari flag? Surely, MS is getting a little too picky now...

Thanks for your thoughts

I'm thinking about buying the Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM Lens for my canon slr. It's got good reviews but i'm wary about buying a superzoom lens, as the image quality is often compromised with such a large zoom. The reviews kind of suggest opposite though so i just wondered if anyone had any experience with the lens?

Thanks
