Off Topic / Shot lists?
« on: March 25, 2010, 18:15 »
Just curious as to how other photographers minds work  :)
Do you always use a shotlist?
Do you stick to your shotlist?
What do you do when things aren't going as planned? Do you move on to the next shot, or do you try to make the shot work by looking at it from another angle, or changing something?

Designing a shot in your head, or on paper does not always work when on location, for whatever reason. I started thinking about this while going through today's shoot. Oddly enough, all of my best shots were of variations of my original idea, not planned for.

So, I'm thinking of 2 rules here.
1. Make a shot list
2. Don't be afraid to throw out the shotlist and try not to get frustrated when things don't go as planned, something good might come of it.

Love to hear some opinions on how you approach your photography workday  :)

The Gynecologist Who Wanted to be a Mechanic!

A gynecologist had become fed up with malpractice insurance and HMO paperwork and was burned out. Hoping to try another career where skillful hands would be beneficial, he decided to become a mechanic. He went to the local technical college, signed up for evening classes, attended diligently, and learned all he could. When the time for the practical exam approached, the gynecologist prepared carefully for weeks and completed the exam with tremendous skill. When the results came back, he was surprised to find that he had obtained a score of 150%.

Fearing an error, he called the instructor, saying, "I don't want to appear ungrateful for such an outstanding result, but I wonder if thereis an error in the grade."

The instructor said, "During the exam, you took the engine apart  perfectly, which was worth 50% of the total mark. "You put the engine back together again perfectly, which is also worth 50% of the mark."

After a pause, the instructor added, "I gave you an extra 50%  because you did it all through the muffler, which I've never seen done
in my entire career."

Computer Hardware / Dead computer hard drive rescue???
« on: November 08, 2008, 12:33 »
I had a computer die with 3 Sata hardrives in it. 2 slave drives and one with the OS on it.
I was able to rescue the files from the 2 slave drives by attaching to the Cd rom cables in a new machine. Computer recognized them like an external hardrive, very relieved:). Bad news is, this isn't working for the 3rd drive with the OS on it...hmmm?

Does anyone know how to get the info off the OS drive? Using the above method the computer won't boot.

Any advice welcome.

I'm just curious as to why the default search doesn't seem to update much, or ever??
I see a lot of images sitting in the same slots in the search for more than a year. Sometimes entire series that still are not selling after a year or more. I have an image that sitting in the #3 slot under "beach" search  for about a year and a half now. I would love to replace it with any of 200 or more images that will certainly sell better. I don't understand the search at all? very confused. Anyone else baffled by the dreamstime relevant search?

Photo Critique / Rejection ?
« on: July 07, 2008, 14:20 »
I got this rejection today

"This file contains an excess of pixel discoloration when viewed at 100%, which we felt too severe and would affect the quality of print production".

First time seeing this reason, wondering if someone knows what it means?

Is this a result of the image being underexposured?

Have resubmit option, is it fixable?

Adobe Stock / Fotolia missing credits?
« on: June 19, 2008, 17:37 »
I had a 100 credit extended license sale today. Checked my stats page and saw that I was credited 37 credits. Went back to the stats page about an hour later and the credits were gone  :o  I emailed support and they said it takes a couple of days???? I have never noticed this before when selling an extended license on fotolia, usually the credits show right away and stay there. Anyone have any ideas or similar experiences?

I was thinking maybe the buyer changed their mind but I am still showing the sale.
I this some new policy that I am not aware of?

iStockPhoto.com / Which sites put a time hold on images?
« on: May 30, 2008, 17:22 »
I am seriously considering going exclusive with istock. Was wondering if someone can tell me the least painfull way to go about this. I have images on:

IS
DT- 6 month wait?
FT- ?
SS- ?
BS- 3 months?
123- ?
STX- ?
SV- ?

Do I understand correctly that I can still upload to the sites that don't put a hold on images while waiting for the 6 months?

Any advice would be appreciated  :) thanks.

I know Istock converts Adobe rgb to srgb for thumbnails, but how many of the other sites are doing that now?

Off Topic / Stupid things we do while shooting?
« on: April 01, 2008, 19:53 »
We are all human and everyone makes mistakes at some point.

With light fading fast, I ran a quarter mile down the beach, long lens and monopod in tow. There was an offshore breeze blowing and 8 foot waves, which never happen in Florida. I wanted to get some shots of a couple of guys surfing before the sun faded past the waves. Anyway, completely winded from the run I made it just in time. Checklist: check iso, check aperature, check shutter speed, check to make sure image stabalizer on..snap, snap, snap.....what!!! forgot memory card (card back at house quarter mile away) :P

Also, I was shooting a beautiful calm clear day at Bahia Honda State park in the Florida Keys. I shot for hours and  got some great shots!! to bad they were all at Iso 800.

Anyone else??

Even with the price increase, Istock earnings for this month will almost double my second place site this month. This is strange? was wondering if anyone else is experiencing this trend? or maybe just a fluke?

Off Topic / Model Mayhem Website
« on: March 29, 2008, 22:03 »
I just recently opened an account on modelmayhem.com to try and hook up with some models in my area. After browsing around for about a week, I noticed there are a ton of photographers shooting artistic nudes and beauty shots of T&A cropped at the Knees. Some of these photographers are quite good, some not so good. My question is: where do these guys market this material? is it considered stock? Are they doing it just to get women half or fully naked? Just wondering if and where the market is or if it is all just fun and games?  :)

I realize if your extremely good the big glossy's would pick up your material, but what if your work is somewhere inbetween or to edgy?

General Stock Discussion / Strange thing?
« on: February 15, 2008, 00:37 »
I had a file rejected 10 days ago on one of the big micro sites. Today a strange thing happened,  it miraculously showed up as being approved :)
How sweet is that? Is there a little mouse that runs around in the middle of the night changing rejections?

Has anyone ever had this happen to them before?
very cool indeed!!
