Bigstock.com / Re: BigStock 3 month policy and DT sell right
« on: June 19, 2008, 04:06 »
It is not a problem to remove a single image at BigStock if you sell the rights to it anywhere.

Hi,

It just happened to me that I had to remove one image from my portfolio yesterday, I wanted to send it for a competition and needed  to reclaim full rights in case of anything, so I tried to get it deleted from all stock folios.

BigStock reacted immediately, no problem at all.

Crestock is another story, they still keep me waiting.

Thank you all for your comments,

I agree, it should be DT whom I should ask first, plus I do want to be fair on this, especially since Dreamstime which I really really like.

cheers

Dreamstime.com / DT exclusive for photo contest
« on: June 15, 2008, 04:09 »
Hi,

I'd like to know your opinion on this; I'm trying to figure it out myself, but it's always good to ask..

I'm planning to send a specific picture to a photography contest at a local travel magazine. According to the rules, in case of going through to the finals, I give the newspaper the right for unlimited reprints + commercial use for promotional reasons only.

The picture is a DT exclusive.

Is it a legal and wise thing to do? Does "exclusivity" on stocks concern stock business only, or does it mean I can't use the picture anymore? Is it safe to remove it from my DT portfolio? If yes, better do it right now or wait until the results?

thanks in advance for your opinions, cheers

General Stock Discussion / Micro vs Macro: designers' choice
« on: June 11, 2008, 09:51 »
A colleague of mine, a designer, claimed in a recent conversation that she never visits microstock sites (the name Istockphoto didn't actually ring any bell). According to her, all the pictures and graphics her company needs is usually taken from Getty or Alamy. The reason: not enough variety in micro.

Maybe I should point out that what they do (as far as I know) are pretty specific projects for the Dutch market, concerning antiques, curiosa etc.

Still, it's been on my mind lately; do you have experience with the designers' side of stock? Is it possible to judge if the big agencies (which apparently don't mind the price that much) are moving toward microstock or staying with macro?

In any case, maybe it's a good moment to start shooting more "out of the box", niche images. Which reminds me, my bro used to collect snails :P

123RF / Re: New Reviewers or new Quality requirements?
« on: June 11, 2008, 09:29 »
Did 123RF get new reviewers or are they trying to get tougher than iS and SS?

They definetly decided to improve the quality by increasing the requirements. Which is good. What I do not understand though, are the unclear rejections for "composition" and "lighting" reasons; stuff which went through IS, SS and DT get rejected sometimes.. Well, I say, let's get over it and upload more. Maybe the reviewer just "didn't like it".

I think there should be a new category for such rejections - "sorry, I just simply don't like it". At least it would be fair. After all, they have full right to disagree on accepting my photos, same as I have the full right to upload some others, or to some other agency.

Well, maybe I'm too easy on them, but I do believe in their good will and I do think that sometimes they just know better.

PS. While mass rejections at 123rf never happened to me, it's quite common at Crestock. They usually take 1 or 2 out of a batch of 50. I figure I just don't fit their profile, so I'm going to stop

I'm near my first payout, things are better since my acceptance is better. I think it play a lot on the results in search and my learning period have played against me for a long time. I just hope it will continu that way.

Best thing to me: it's the most easy upload agency

I'm also nearing my first payout and I have to say, out of all the agencies it's mostly DT (and IS) that actually help me figure out my way in microstock. I find their expectations consistent and rejections just, so the more I'm learning the better the acceptance rate = better exposure and sales.

If I were to ever go exclusive it would be them.
