Canon / Re: Canon Announces EOS 7D
« on: October 10, 2009, 11:58 »

Sorry I was asking Holgs if he was interested in switching (he's an Olympus guy now), but you shouldn't need to great of a computer to handle the video.  I have a 5D mark II and am using my laptop to edit (basic editing only) while traveling, when I get home next year I'll get a new pc to try my hand at more in depth editing.  I love the video so far it's much better than my HV30, I just need some sales to justify it.  The video also looks great at higher ISO which I would assume is pretty similar on the 7D.

Oh, right, now I get it  :D

Yes, I've heard great things about the 5D mkII's video  8)

I reckon I'll give it (video) a more serious shot once I'm comfortable with the 7D as a still camera. Hmmm... I wonder what type of video sells  ;D

Thanks for all your views everyone. Really appreciate it.

In terms of buyer behavior and preference, what would a buyer be thinking if they specifically wanted and RM image instead of a similar subject/image sold as RF? Since RM does not necessarily mean exclusiveness anyway.

traveler1116, I'm not exactly a video person, but the 7D, comes with very impressive video features that I will probably be tempted to start to dabble with it, once I get a better desktop PC to deal with the post processing.

I'll probably be taking some 'lessons' from a friend who is a video expert, and has taken top quality video with his 5D mkII.

So I'm not sure if I'm the right person to recommend you to switch systems, but if video is what you're after, the 5D mkII should probably also be on your radar.

cclapper, according to Canon, the sensor on the 7D is an improvement over the 50D, in that the distance between the microlenses to the photodiode is reduced, so light focuses better on the photodiodes. So noise 'should' be better controlled. In any case, I would usually shoot at ISO 100 for MS, esp when I'm shooting (desktop) studio shots, landscapes I would usually use a tripod and opt for low ISO as well.

Noise is an issue for birding, esp where I come from, the birds are found in the dense rainforest, under challenging light conditions, we'd be lucky to be able to shoot at ISO 400, and to be able to shoot at ISO 1600 while keeping the feather details as shown in my Tiger Shrike shot is really great!

Thanks holgs. I've the 40D for birding, and always longed for better AF and more AF points for BIF shots, and Canon answered with the 7D, on top of that the 100% viewfinder is an added bonus. I'm surprised that Canon is able to pull off a usable (I wouldn't say miraculously noise free) 18megapixel 1.6x crop sensor, so I can crop and still easily retain over 10megapixel of useful data with details that the 40D has.

In terms of lower ISO noise (eg ISO 400), I've read some feedback that it's not good though, which is ironic somewhat, given that everyone has been looking at it's ISO 800/1600/3200 performance. I'm still testing out the camera under various conditions as they come (I don't do specific tests), and initial thoughts about the ISO400 noise isn't too bad, but not much to cheer about either. AF is great, some in flight shots were done with decent results, and the zonal/AF expansion is something I've started using and starting to get use to.

Overall, I think the 7D is much what I hoped for in a wildlife/birding camera, without the hefty price tag of a 1D mkIII (or mkIV if it is to be launched soon). Still have one gripe about AF ability with an f8 lens (eg a 1.4x TC on a, say, 400mm f5.6L lens), but that can be 'solved' with taped pins and good light.

That's my initial thoughts, I like the 7D for it's on-the-field usability (better AF, faster frame rate, 100% viewfinder), noise issue the verdict isn't quite out yet, but as long as I can keep it under control with NR filters, I would be happy. I don't expect a miracle in the noise department, 5D mkII is still the benchmark, and I doubt if any crop sensor can compete with the FF sensor of 5D.

For my MS shoots, it probably won't make much difference to me, for birds and wildlife, and probably sports, 7D would definitely be quite useful.

I'm pretty happy with mine. The features are pretty much what I wanted from a bird photography point of view.

Here's a shot at ISO1600 with some cropping (maybe about 10-20% cropped off). NR done on the background, but not on the bird.

Success in the stock image industry (by whatever measures) doesn't happen overnight. It takes hard work and dedication over a longer period of time.
Walk this road for 3 or 4 years with consistent new imagery and you'll see what I mean.

You also will always improve your quality and style - things you can't do without.

Most importantly: Use correct keywords. Buyers/researchers are (mostly) not idiots. If they have a concept in mind they also know how it could be visually conceived so they can come up with some keywords on their own. Stupid example is not to use the word "friend" in an image of a dog (although he might be man's best friend...). The buyer would know to look for a dog...

I'd suggest not to mix RF/RM of one subject like you did with the Hoover dam. I'd leave them all RM unless you have the RFs on the Micros.

That's just my opinion and some might suggest otherwise.

Points noted, and many thanks.

Some things mentioned here about RM/RF sales ratio and series do not apply - at least for me.

So far I'm selling far more RF at Alamy than RM maybe 10/1 ratio. So to say that RM is the way to go at Alamy is nonsense. It only depends on your portfolio - not the agency.

Screw their ranking system. A buyer is looking for an image and will look as long as necessary until he finds it. If you have that image with adequate keywords you will get the sale period.

I sold abstract images where it's sometimes hard to find keywords and yet buyers found them.

@ OP - You're still far away from the photographers that upload 20 images of the same subject with minimal framing changes. I don't think it's too bad in your case.

You definitely need to get more images online. Come back once you have 2000 images with them, then we talk about sales.

Thanks for the input. So should I stick with mixing the RF/RM or decide on one or the other for each set of images?

Perhaps one can still find a 'niche' in RF or RM in Alamy. Are your sales mostly from returning customers?

2,000 images eh? The uploading and keywording is gonna take me a while, I'll try my best.

Adobe Stock / Re: Denial Before Complete?
« on: October 08, 2009, 05:51 »
I think it's probably their review process. The reviewers might have already have access to the images before it's completed.

A couple of times, I think they were just waiting for me to complete, as once I complete my submission, the approval/rejection comes in almost immediately  :D

When you go to the new 2.2 editor, double click on the first image, highlight the keywords in the Comprehensive box, Control+X, then move up to the main box and Control+V you're done. Good thing is you don't have 1000 images yet, so you can do that in a few minutes, cut and paste. Then you can click next image and keep going. Just click save when you are done and it saves all of them.

No you can't change a license type once it's set. Sometimes Alamy will adjust things if you write and ask, but they make it a point to say it can't be done.

Most of your mountains, highways and trees look like RF shots anyway. Keep in mind that the license type also makes a difference on whether someone may want to purchase the image. If they can buy it for $36 RF and it's $200 Licensed (and yes you are correct it's the same as RM, just a different name) they will go buy someones else RF photo and you'll get nothing. License the photos according to the type of content.

If it has copyrighted subjects or people with no model release or anything like that, just make it Editorial. You've done your job and the buyer is responsible for the end use.

Thanks for the editing tips. Would the extra effort of putting some in 'essential' keywords help a lot in the search process, or just copy everything across to main keywords? There's a tighter limit on the number of 'essential' keywords we can put.

By Editorial, I guess you mean applying restrictions on all but 'Editorial' use. Correct?

Thanks to everyone (Sharpshot, RT, Zues, Herman, Holg, melastmohican) for your kind advice and feedback. I really appreciate it. It has given me a better perspective of what Alamy is about.

RT, you raised a very good point about the RF & L images. I will be more careful at how I classify them in future. Don't think I can backtrack on the current RFs I have there, though they haven't sold any. By RM, would you be referring to Licensed, or the one with 'Rights Protected'?

Moving forward, I shall have a go at uploading a wider range of images, and the tough part of having to go through the keywords of my current images again.

I still have a number of images uploaded and as well as waiting on my harddisk, so I'll have lots to catch up on.

Anymore things I need to know?

Thanks Holger for taking the time to view the portfolios. Your comments are quite valid, I appreciate it, and understand your points.

I do note the emphasis on 'tight' keywording in Alamy, though I don't receive much 'feedback' in terms of zooms statistics, while I do see improvements, the numbers just doesn't seem significant. I've uploaded these images in the past few months, and perhaps I should be more patient.

I'm aiming to work with different set of images for MS & Alamy, perhaps I should include more 'landmarks'? Would that constitute images that people want?

I'm also exploring using smugmug, how is yours doing there?

I'm still pretty quiet on Alamy in terms of sales and zoom statistics. Was wondering if anyone can take a look at my images to see if there's anything I should be doing to help?

Is it ok to post my alamy link here?

Thanks.

I took this in Singapore, needless to say it's been downloaded numerous times. I wish I could get it on DT though.

« on: August 11, 2009, 04:57 »
Here in Singapore, there have been 75 admitted to the ICU due to H1N1 (influenza-A or 'swine' flu) infection, 9 deaths, and 1 in 2 cases of reported flu cases is due to the H1N1.

Of the 9 deaths, some have no other underlying medical conditions prior to getting the flu that could have also contributed to their deaths. There are signs pointing to the obese as in a higher risk group, but no medical proof.

I don't feel there is any widespread panic about, not now. But when it first happened, the media was all about it, and tamiflu 'flew' off the shelves.

I was thinking of giving Smugmug a go at selling prints of my photos. Maybe cafepress has a potential too. I guess the key is to be able to reach your target audience, marketing and making our site visible to potential buyers.

Haven't looked at zazzle though.

Looks promising, would consider putting my alamy images on their midstock range.

123RF / Re: Are 123 screwing us ?!!
« on: July 30, 2009, 18:18 »
Had a similar issue at 123RF recently, when some of my earnings went missing, resulting in a -'ve balance. Was about to write to them when a couple of days later it was back again. Wonder what was that all about.

To me, they are ok, with an easy submission process, I have no major complaints.

Cheers.

I'm in... better late than never  :)

Like what some of the others mentioned, I prefer shooting macro under overcast skies, as it doesn't give harsh shadows. Bit the lack of shadows may also make the image a bit bland, with no sense of 'depth'.

So I would use an off-shoe cord to get the flash off centered, plus a flash diffuser to create some shadows, but not too harsh, use the flash as a fill-in, not the main source of light (ie, -'ve compensation). Plus the fill-in flash light could help bring out a more vibrant colour.

A reflector may also do a similar job, but I'm more used to using a fill-in flash approach.

Hope this helps

PTLee
