3rd try and I'm in. Woohoo !

My advice to anybody who want to apply there : go around the forum to get info about the submission process there. It's a bit particular. A couple hours of research can save you the 2 months I wasted (1 month delay between each "try").

I'm uploading right now, and hope I'll experience the famous "shutterstock newbie effect" !!!

Man, that was more exciting than an EL sale  ;D

I also got your generic model release. The one I used up to now got rejected in dreamstime because it didn't have the phone number of the model  >:(

Yes DT can be very strict on that. I got a release rejected once because the witness name was not in print. Make sure all names are in print writing. For now, I fill out all myself, except the signature. Girls tend to have tiny handwritings and when you resize the MRF, it might become unreadable.

Good advise. By print, you mean capital letters ?
I thought about writing them myself too, but didn't cause I thought it would look fake (I write everything) and then make some picasso style signature...

Thanks for the keyword suggestion !! Feel free to make more. It is very appreciated. Seeing your portfolio, I understand that you don't do it for the 2c, so it's cool of you to help that way.
By the way, last week-end, I went on your website, and I really liked the way you give credit to your models, with their forte, etc...

Don't be shocked, I keyworded an image of yours on Dreamtime. You missed 2 essential things. I came up with 20 more. Sometimes I act like Mother Theresa  ::)
Just my 2 cents... literally.  :P

I'm not shocked at all, I'm a lazy keyworder. I read a few articles about keywording now and try to give it more attention, but I'm probably still quite bad at it.
I didn't understand your comment about dreamtime. From your message I understand that you changed the keywords of the image directly in Dreamstime... Is that possible ?

It's always good to have a mother theresa around   ;D
Could you give me the link or id of the concerned photo, and the modifications you recommend ?

New Sites - General / Conditions on pixmac keywords
« on: February 02, 2009, 13:45 »
Hi everyone,
I haven't read the fine prints of pixmac (I know, I know, I should...). I wonder if they have a policy concerning the keywords they produce for our images. If I want to reuse these keywords on another site, is it ok ?
I mean, they don't have a copyright of sort on the keyword, but if I upload 100 pix there, then embed the keywords they wrote on the IPTC of my files (without added value from my part), then upload these 100 pix to 5 other sites keyworded, do I infrige on some rule or policy ?

And I'm sure you have a bigger car than mine (I got a little fiat)    :)

More to the point : If you don't have umbrellas, here's a great place to get them. All prices include shipping. Unbeatable. Seems too good to be true, but I ordered many (too many) times from them. No problem.

Newbie Discussion / Quick tip request...
« on: February 01, 2009, 11:37 »
I'm about to start my first shoot of objects on white background. I just assembled my "strobist" setup from different sources.
I have 3 speedlights, 2 shoot through umbrellas, 1 silver, 2 plastic diffusers for the flashes (you know, you plug it directly on the flash), 3 tripods. White seemless background rolled down from my mezzanine (from 2m high) and another couple meters on the floor.
I thought I could try and shoot big objects, cause less people do so when then only have light boxes.
As it's my first try, it would be cool to have some general technical guidelines as well as some suggestions of subjects.

I don't mean to steal your niches or ideas, just a few guidelines would be helpful for the beginner I am.

For example, I don't know if for some objects I should use some kind of stand, hang them from wires, whatever. Seems like only lying on the white paper might not be very flattering for some subjects.

Yeah, tan doesn't look as fruity as in his profile picture ;-)

I'm actually in the middle the shoot. I'm very happy with it, good practice. Three toys, oops, sorry, strobes, some gels over black and now white backgrounds.
My girlfriend is here too, so I don't have to shoot myself. I might continue on my own later on, though !

While I'm at it, I'll shoot some isolated objects over white background. First time ever. Hope result will be usable for my third SS application on the 6th, they seem to like that stuff, and I have none.

Zymmetrical.com / Re: Is Zym actually sometimes usable ?
« on: February 01, 2009, 06:07 »
Making progress here... The site was much faster yesterday and today. Not lightning fast, but usable (for basic navigation at least, I have no content uploaded for the moment...)
I got my ftp login and password on the site, but tried for two days to connect with error 530 everytime (wrong user/pass). I tried typing the password instead of copy/paste, verified that I was on passive mode. Still 530.
Do I have to wait for a while to have my ftp account activated ?

14
Thanks a lot !
I don't intend to do it regularly, but I wanna test my new "strobist like" setup before shooting models. Even with friends, I don't wanna fiddle for an hour with balancing those lights. So if I can make it productive, it's even better.
I guess it also helps to be in front of the camera for a change, to understand how it feels like for the people you shoot ;-)

General Stock Discussion / Signing a model realease to yourself ??
« on: February 01, 2009, 05:50 »
Hello, in case you take photos of yourself (timer or remote shutter) and want to sell them, can you sign a model release with you as a photographer AND model ?
Sounds silly, but without a model release the photo wouldn't get accepted. Or would it if you mention that in the "remark for reviewer" field ? (this field is not present in all site, however...)

Finding that one was not such a warm feeling. I don't believe I sold a license enabling the buyer to put the photo on CD covers for that photo. Or maybe I didn't read the fine prints...
Photo found through tineye.

I've just started playing with speedlights, strobist style. Lots of fun. Got shoot through umbrellas and just got black straws to make snoots. A few DIY sessions in perpective !
Tomorrow, I'll try to "shoot for stock" for the first time. Seemless white hanging from my mezzanine and my strobist setup. Hopefully I'll get one or two uploadable shots !

No virus !
It's all around the news. No official statement from google yet, but it's a glitch on the server side.

Now you make me wonder if that was only a glitch... Well, at least I'm up to date now ;)

I had the same, and thought my desktop might be infected...
Grabbed my laptop, it was the same, at least infection was not the explanation.

Found the solution.

Sooooooo, I guess you use firefox, right ? and search via the search box up right ? Well the very, very quick fix is to not use that box, but go on google website instead and search from there. The quick fix is to update your firefox to 3.0.5. Search from the up right box will not provoke this behaviour anymore in google !

How about the quality of the keywording at pixmac ? Anybody uploaded there and have some feedback on this ?

I have to admit that after yesterday's very bad impression that Zym let me, the fact that you responded on this thread so fast is impressive and shows that you make effort to stay close to the photographers. Or should I say "artist", as on your site ?
 ;)
I think I will let the week-end pass and give it a try next week for some uploads.

Cool ! Combining my two rejections, I have 8 individual photos with no remark. And they are all full rez. On my next submission, I'll downsample them to the minimum 6MP (great advice I read somewhere else), so that noise / artefact rejection are less likely.
Also I intend to shoot some isolated over white this week-end for the first time. They seem to like that.
Next submission is feb 6th. Wish me luck !!
