Correct me if I'm wrong but you should be able to set up a USD account in your own bank and transfer to your own bank with no conversion that doesn't incur the 3% transactional fee.

As per the email it states is only on USD to EUR transfers

Hope what I'm saying is right and that it helps

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Revised targets
« on: December 23, 2011, 01:12 »
After talking with iStock about the RC targets, their announcement was a lot more generous than I was hoping for. Overall, 2011 has been a steady year with steady growth. Downloads are down 8% but overall revenue up about 15% and there was some good momentum during the last few months, I hope that is carried into 2012 and beyond..
Biggest change for 2011 has been the introduction of exclusive vetta & agency content to Getty which adds 10% revenue monthly.

I think (and hope) the old dog has some life in her yet.

I've been submitting some files recently for consideration to Flickr RM at Getty. It seems pretty random what they're looking for, but the more 'snapshotty' the better. I think its safe to assume that they will not be interested in anything remotely smelling of microstock. I've started taking my camera on holidays and travels to try and get some fun images. Honestly, its a nice break from micro..

I've got 9 files approved so far, only in the past week and a bit, but no sales yet. Anyone seeing any movement here?
I am interested- are you allowed to submit to Getty through two "doors" - Istock and Flickr?

Yeah it seems to merge together, okay. As far as i'm informed, its no breach of contract.

« on: February 18, 2010, 12:32 »
have you used any Wacom tablet before - so like, are you talking about upgrading or just using a tablet in general.

I used to have a tablet but it was a long time ago .. probably 10 years .. so the differences are like night and day Im sure. LOL

I have the wacom cintiq 21". Had it for little over a year now. This is the top tool to handle photoshop. Unfortunately it is pricey.

I looked at that one. It was pricey but awesome !! I might upgrade to one later once I get into the swing of using a tablet .. right now I have several other high purchases to make so I'm wanting to keep the tablet cost pretty low around $500

Hey Randy,

I highly recommend the Intuos 4, in at least a medium. There are a few varying opinions being put forward, but I think the responsiveness of both the tablet and the buttons is a massive improvement over the previous model. I had one, but never got used to the 3, it was good in theory, but now use the 4 every day. I use very limited functions in Photoshop and Capture One, so I can easily use the 6 buttons to avoid using a keyboard for shortcuts, thats very handy.

Also, big plus if you're left handed. I use the pen in one hand and the mouse in the other. Still like the 'click' of the mouse..

Josh

thanks will check that, should not have the same shoot uploaded both places. could you PM me what files you mean?

* The best way of submitting future images? The 'Call for artists' was a one time submission to gain an invite to submit, from what I understand. Do I just upload future images to flickr and hope that an editor sees them??

Just found the answer here http://www.microstockgroup.com/general-macrostock/getty-filckr-question/

For those invited, you submit to a private group a max of 100 per month to this flickr group http://www.flickr.com/groups/artistpicks/ The editors will pick from this pool..

Hey all,

I was invited by Getty via flickr a few weeks ago, and am finishing off a few submissions.

Does anyone know:

* The best way of submitting future images? The 'Call for artists' was a one time submission to gain an invite to submit, from what I understand. Do I just upload future images to flickr and hope that an editor sees them??

* Will it affect my Gettyimages account through iStock? Do they just merge? Is there any conflict in having both of them?

Much appreciated,

Josh

Photoshop Discussion / Re: Adobe Bridge CS4 - No refresh?
« on: January 19, 2010, 10:16 »
Thanks Richard and Tyler,

Unfortunately, it wasn't as simple as the 'export clipboard' as that has always been unchecked.

I also tried to purge the previews cache, where all previews are cached at 100% (must be a fair bit of buildup for some photographers). Anyway, that wasn't successfully completed as it couldn't find the folder to purge. Which made me remember I'd used CleanMyMac, in a rash mood of cleaning up, the other day. This seems to have changed Bridge to stop updating changes.

When using the CleanMyMac, it did find 10gb of Adobe related files to purge. I guess i should have checked what that was. Doh.

The F5 does work fine, but can take a while with a folder of up to 300 TIFF files.

Photoshop Discussion / Adobe Bridge CS4 - No refresh?
« on: January 19, 2010, 09:36 »
Hi all,

Hopefully somebody may have had some experience with this and can help me.

Usually when editing TIFFs I use bridge with photoshop, and after being finished in Photoshop, Bridge updates to show the changes. For some reason now, it doesn't update the folder contents or image changes, without going out of the folder and in again.

Make sense to anyone? Thanks!

One unavoidable truth about image inspecting is that there are only 2 options. Approval or rejection. Its one or the other, with very few grey areas in-between. Unfortunately, one of the biggest factors in deciding whether to approve or reject any certain image is the strength of your previous uploads. Ie. if you have a proven track record of approvals and/or sales, the inspector will most likely be (much) more inclined to approve those borderline images when the decision to do so is more objective. So, if you have a 80-90% approval rating and an ok sales record then you will experience much fewer rejections, even if the composition or lighting of certain individual (or even series of) images is questionable.

if that's true it's sad that reviewers rely on reputation rather than actual quality of submitted images

but in my case, i was getting 70-80% or more acceptance at 123 until this mass reject mode began,  so by your theory i shouldnt have been affected.  also it's highly reviewer dependent it seems -- an occ'l batch still gets reviewed by someone who actually judeged the images submitted

Yes, it probably is new inspectors or even more likely, new standards put forward by the agency and poorly executed by the inspectors. I hope they aren't one of your main earners..

12
True, there will always be different 'standards' across the agencies. I think in the future we will see increasingly objective standards with creative content, styling, overall production values being some of the main factors determining an approval or rejection.

Its always helpful to produce a surplus of images and then split them up into weekly (or fortnightly) batches. With a surplus, you can be more selective at least on the first batches. Also, you can then mix them up from different shoots and avoid similarity rejections.

Having been an editor for a few years I know that there is a lot of talent out there. One mistake is to start off by uploading too much and degrading the overall quality of your port, too early in the game. On top of having to improve your skills and tricks, you've got a massive approval deficit to improve as well. Remember, you start at the top with a 100% approval rating.

My point is that there is a 'tipping point' where if you can maintain quality over quantity for an extended period of time you have a much higher chance of getting the better of those borderline inspections.

Not preaching, just saying. I do consult a few successful contributors about these things, so if you've got any questions, drop a PM. Peace ;)

Off Topic / Re: Opening gym, doing research need help!
« on: December 14, 2009, 11:38 »
Hi all

As some of you know on here im opening a new gym in London, England early next year and am doing a bit of research so if any of you have a couple of minutes that you could answer a few questions id be really really greatfu. ideally people who currently go to gyms or have done in the past would prefer to answer but anyone is welcome

Firstly could you write how long you have been using gyms for and how often per week you go

Questions

1. What to you are the most important factors in joining a gym?

2. What would make you cancel your membership and leave?

3. For you personally say you could choose 10 pieces of equipment for a personal gym what would you choose?

4. have you used a power plate? If so do you like it and why?

thanks all and have a merry christmas

Ant

Hey,

1. Facilities and professional instruction. I joined a more expensive gym because it had a pool and good cycling facilities.
2. I cancelled at a cheaper gym because they started reducing costs in dumb ways to afford unnecessary renovations. ie. removed sauna, soap dispensers and code lockers so that you needed to bring your own lock. Its the little things that can make a gym far less convenient.
3. Body bikes, free weights and a sit-up benches. Having a pool is great, but maybe not straight-forward.
4. Nope and no idea what it is.

Thanks for the 5 min break from stock ;)

Software - General / Re: capture one pro 5

Thanks, D ;)

I was working on some files and turned on the focus mask. It shows only her hair as sharp in all the images... Its weird, becuase it doesn't make sense only the hair is sharp here.

Thanks, Diego! I read about it here first.. As far as i can see its a whole new purchase and not a free uprade, right?

The focus mask looks handy! Capture One crashes often for me with anywhere between 500-4000 RAWs loaded, i hope they've worked out some of the performance issues there..

Canon / Re: my first lensbaby attempts
« on: October 30, 2009, 08:47 »

I often use a lensbaby on some shots, adding instant variety to the selects. I find by using live view at 10x and manual focus, with a mono or tripod, the focus on the images isn't completely off either.

I do believe it have a use in stock photography, although I'm yet to upload any lensbaby shots.

Josh

General Stock Discussion / Are your images for sale on eBay?
« on: September 16, 2009, 02:49 »
Hey all,

Yesterday, David Hobby twittered about the criminal sales of 3000 stock photographs over ebay on DVD, sourced from Micro with the most recognisable images coming from Yuri Arcurs. The DVD was being sold for $US4.99 or thereabouts, and this is in direct contradiction to the allowed usage of microstock images. Ebay has now removed that posting and is hopefully tying up any loose ends there.

However, I went on to ebay and did a quick search for 'stock images' and this came up: http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/digienlight

Not to start a witch hunt, but this seems ridiculously cheap, and why sell them on eBay??

General Stock Discussion / Re: Where did she go wrong?
« on: September 11, 2009, 02:47 »
I didn't read it, but watched the video (i'm young, short attention span, 21st century fried my brain etc.)..

Every now and then when dealing with certain modelling agencies, stylists or location people, i come across this sort of wishy-washy unproductive, don't-really-want-to-commit-or-care-about anything, attitude. Is she surprised things went badly? and then seems to really making a real drama about it now.

Its different in stock, the successful ones are committed and have a lot of energy and burn for what they do.

Bit of a rant.. just glad not to shoot fashion.

Thanks for sharing!

General Stock Discussion / Re: Cost per image?
« on: September 03, 2009, 14:00 »
Hey Asiaphoto,

Thanks for sharing, and of course one thing that really affects costs per image more than anything is your shot count from a day. We really try and optimize (i mean really) a day of shooting to get the absolute most out of it.

For a single model, studio 300 shots @ $4-5 per. Other end of the spectrum, location, 5 models and 200 selects @ $22 dollars per image.

From discussions with Yuri his shot cost is roughly the same, but he does really optimize his shooting to get a lot out of every day.

Hope that gives some insight.

Computer Hardware / Re: which wacom intuos to buy, 3 or 4
« on: September 02, 2009, 09:09 »
Hey, I just today got my second Intuos 4 replacing an older intuos 3 i was using at home.

For me the Intuos 4 was worth not only twice the price, but I needed two of them as well! Highly recommended. You spend a long time with whatever pointing device you use, and the Intuous is so much more *intuitive* and comfortable to use that i would suggest getting the 4 or biding time with a mouse until you can.

Hope that helps!

I'm very glad I haven't got 'friends' like you.

ignored, life too short.

I spot more than a few diffences, not least of all in sales ;)

I did the same search on Istock's artist of the week from this week or last. http://bit.ly/2Y3Kwr or countless other examples. 'Business team' is a specific term, so that may do more to explain similarities than anything else.

I am a good friend of yuri's but have been on set with him less than 3-4 times with him. Maybe not enough to be described a monkey. Easy there, tiger ;)

Having seen how he works in his own studio you guys appear to be just reproducing his stuff as closely as you can __ monkey see, monkey do.

What sets you apart is your research and creativity.

Great statement, could not agree more. But, this for me is why its okay to share. Research and creativity come later on in the process.. and not so easily shared or explained.

Plenty of scope for lots of football pics - youths on Capetown beach at dusk, couple of silhouetted goals etc, etc..

haha this is too specific to share ;) i've planned some shots of this with my favourite ethnic model. shooting it in cape town would be a bonus... this kind of thinking is lacking in micro, i think. current affairs conceptual images, done well. I've seen some images for 2010 on getty, and have seen mr. locke shooting for swine flu (?) another area to expand into.. often doesn't need a shoot dedicated to it, rather just a few extra props..

Hey Laflor,

I know we're friends off the interweb, as well. I hope i can still comment here.. Actually, i wrote a long post and then lost it when I for some reason decided to refresh the page. doh!

Disclaimer: These are general concepts and personal obsversations. I would not mind if a million owners of highend DSLRs read this, as there are too many factors that affect a shoot to worry about competition from sharing concepts. I shoot one way, laflor shoots his way and so on.. we produce very different images, and ultimately all we can do is our own interpretation of concepts, for better or worse.

1. Business teams/people. Always needed, and props are always changing. New setups, new angles, (new concepts to think about with an economic crisis). Have been thinking that the number of 'Happy smiling business people' in the world is maybe on the way down.. Perhaps its time to reassess what we shoot there. More casual business, more working from home.

2. Diversity, across all subjects (family, business, school, teens). Inside micro, this can definitely be better represented. Even my low-budget shots of African americans are selling.. Definitely room here.

3. Seniors. Maybe a smaller group, next time ;) (inside joke, laflor shot 30-odd senior models in a group on his last shoot)

4. Better youth culture. A lot is lost in translation when adults are shooting this. There is room for a re-look at this..

5. Medical professionals.

I've got lots more, maybe we can talk off the interweb soon!

Good luck with the shooting..
