General Stock Discussion / Re: Quality of stock photo

Would you advise a young photographer to join the industry?

Why not if you are young and have plenty of time to waste?

There are a few that come to my mind: Stocksy, Trevillion, Arcangel, Filmsupply.com, etc.....Everyone of them is focusing on a specific area of visual content. if they are going to survive in the long term is an open question. I hope so.

There are doing well for me. Much better than the big agencies.

.....Investing in adding new images would be a complete waste of time for me. Maybe other people aren't experiencing the downward trend.

If we look at new images at various agencies they are mainly submitted by bright-eyed newcomers who believe there is a pot of gold in stock photography.

I've been making more than a hundreds a month in Twenty20. :)

Submit enough materials it'll make money for you. YOu must have the stamina to last the distance.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Figuring out a way forwards
« on: June 06, 2020, 11:28 »
The best way forward is out of stock and into commission works if one has the equipments and expertise to do it.

This is like moving to another curve instead of still languishing on the same stock photos curve.

Go and read "Shooting for stock is overrated? A way out?" thread.

I normally charge headshots of 3 photos for $100. Shooting in the comfort of my home studio.

Product shots of 5 photos for $150 on white background.

Stock photos used to be $200 -$250 per photo. I was lucky to be in there at the right time. Now with $0.12 per photo. It's the love for photography not money that sustains the shooting.

Many enthusiastic beginners are still wearing the rosy color tinted glasses. They will be ones who sustain microstock. We have $250 per photo for historical reference. They only have $0.12 in their visions.

Except for the newbies with bright eyes who are flooding the microstock sites with unimpressive content some "veteran" stock stockers I know are finding a way out.

I started to shoot for local businesses mainly interior, headshots, food and commercial products etc. and had made $10,000 since late august last year. I leverage the photography experience I've gained from shooting stock. Haven't had much time for stock since then. Average job is around $200.

Those few stock photographers who lived through WFC would know it felt.  However this time around there are the e-commerce and online traders. Things may work out a bit different for non-stock shooters and freelancers.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Alamy - is it worth it?
« on: September 04, 2019, 05:02 »
A company in another city needed photos of a hospital in Sydney. They advertised online for someone to shoot the hospital by showing sample tumbnails of the hospital with Alamy and Getty watermarks. To get someone in Sydney to go to shoot the hospital was cheaper than buying 6 photos from Alamy or Getty.

Commercial shooters used to be expensive and stock has driven many of them out of business. Now with internet and free online job market sites, The companies get a commercial shooter to provide the most up-to-date photos in better weather conditions than those old photos in stock sites. I guess it's fight back time.

When I went non-exclusive four years ago I decided I'd upload my entire microstock portfolio to Alamy (including some editorial work) as a potential source of extra income.

The day I found out many contributors were uploading their microstock files into alamy especially the setup still life shots common in microstock I changed from a studio shooter into an outdoor editorial shooter. My income from Alamy has been better than those days of shooting studio tabletop setup shots.

I got into Alamy in 1917 which was still a golden era for traditional stock. With only 200 photos I started selling normally at $250 a photo.

Now? I'm not sure.

I guess with so many online job market sites many photographers are turning to shoot for commercial jobs instead of shooting stock. At least you'll get to see money faster and more consistent.

CanStockPhoto.com / Re: Upload Rejects
« on: August 08, 2019, 20:22 »
They recommend 5-15 keywords I'm not sure they have it as an actual rule. Canstock are well known for their bizarre rejections.

To auto reject uploads with more than 15 keywords is a cheap way. It would take more afford on the part of CanStock to hire a team of inspectors to go through every submission.

Wondering why they call themselves CanStock? We "Can" your stock? :)

Shame on you for castigating a photographer without more information.  CanStock has done the same thing to me, even though the description and keywords describe exactly and only what is in the image.  It is a glitch in their system or a problem with their reviewers - you should get the full story before pointing fingers.

Thanks. I do not sparm keywords.  I take pains to do my keywords making sure they are relevant to the subject.

Maybe Cathyslife should ask herself why all other sites accept my uploads? :)

CanStockPhoto.com / Upload Rejects
« on: August 07, 2019, 15:47 »
Recently I have on several occasions my uploads being rejected with message
"File contains invalid keywords, title, or description. Please ensure keywords describe only what is physically and prominently visible in the file."

The same files were uploaded to all other agencies with no problem.

I'm thinking of not to upload to them anymore because to delete those files one by one take ages. Better off spending the time creating new images.

16
Optimistically sites such as alamy, EyeEm etc. would be good for uploading if you have something different.

I enjoy significantly better downloads from my Australian landscape content than those I've taken in USA and Europe. I don't think they are better. It's mainly due to little competition. Australia is a bit too far for photographers to get to.

iStockPhoto.com / How to specify if a file is editorial?
« on: January 17, 2018, 05:58 »
At the moment whatever I upload via Deepmeta becomes royal free images. I want to start to submit editorial files and how do I specify them as editorial files? I can't see there is a selection for it in Deepmeta.

Hi, i'm new in this business, i wuold like to know if it's possible to live only selling photos in microstock site?

Yes you can if you're prepared to spend time, energy and expenses to shoot what is in demand and patient enough to wait a year for the money to coming rolling in.

For examples istock/getty regular shooting briefs in their sites and those emailed to the photographers are the gospels some successful shooters avidly follow.

Best of luck.

PhotoDune / Re: Submissions and access gone at Envato
« on: November 27, 2016, 20:42 »
I have just uploaded 47 images on Photodune (by ftp and then on the site) without any problem

That's a good sign. You may be a among the small selected group of high quality content contributors.

They used to give a top authors list. I last looked a few months ago I was just hanging on 100-ish position. I'm not too sure I could make it.

Veer / Re: Veer dying ?

Corbis still owns veer? I understood many Corbis executives are leaving the company

Don't think Getty will be hiring them if Veer is the best they can do. :)

Photos do not have previews after uploading with DeepMeta to istock.

Anyone has the same problem?
