Hey... Thanks for all the replies and tips. I'll get working on it.

First of all, yes, it is an image I got from google and I'm not publishing it, not selling it, not even using it on MY website. The only place I posted it was here and it is for me to practice. I have no intention of using it anywhere, AT ALL!

That being said, the hardest part for me it the light source and placing the shadows in the right place. I'll take all of your tips into consideration and hope to make a better final image!

Thanks a lot! :)

Photo Critique / Young Girl in Photoshop / Lightroom tryout.
« on: April 14, 2013, 13:31 »
Hey guys. I've been wanting to practice more in lightroom and photoshop so this was a good test for me. I have attached a screenshot of the before/after photo. What I want to know is more on the editing and not so much on the photo.. Does the background (I just googled a graffiti background) look real? If not, what can I do to make it better?

Critique and tips are highly welcome!

Thanks a lot,
Dan

Thanks for the reply.

I'm sure that I can make good footage with it, my question is about video quality. If it's pixelated, noise or something like that. I currently use a 5D II to shoot footage. I also have a compact Sony WX-10 but the footage has terrible quality, so it's useless for stock.

Seems like a very useful product, at a reasonable price. :)

Hey guys. How are you all doing?

I've been wanting to buy the new GoPro Hero3 Black Edition since it shoots 1080p at 60fps and 720p at 120fps. I would like to know if anyone knows about the video quality and if it's good enough for stock. I sure hope so, since it costs around US$1000 in Brazil (yes, we pay the highest taxes in the world in this * country).

I'm aware that it has almost fish eye lenses and as far as I know, there are no adapters. I don't plan on going sky diving or base jumping, but a bike trail or rollercoaster shot would be possible.

Anyway, that's what I wish to know. Do you think it's worth spending US$1000 on it, a bit for fun, but mostly for stock footage.

Cheers,
Dan

100% comission? That is very odd! Not much planning into that, is there?

If you've got time, you can get the Audio-Technica ATR6250 condenser mic which has a hot-shoe mount for less than $30 on ebay.

Yeah... I found it for US$29. It would be perfect. Shame the shipping to Brazil costs US$39. Why do I live in a third-world and far away country?

Quote from: MikLav
it will probably work but they don't provide enough technical details to say for sure.

Uhmm... interesting. I'll try to find the adaptor for my current Shure mic and check it, if that works, the other ones should too!

Thanks for the replies guys! :D Always nice to count on the good folks here! :D

Hey MikLav.

Thanks for the reply. I want the mic for simple things like shooting a simple "making of" interview and commentaries. The one I have next is on the beach and it might be windy, so I don't want all that wind noise.

Would something (VERY SIMPLE and cheap) like this work on the 5D II? - http://goo.gl/mTIa -

I don't need "CNN News" quality audio, but just something that would get fair enough sound.

Thanks again...

Didn't see Artmyth's reply, sorry!

Thanks as well. I had a look at that Rode mic but it's a bit more than I want to spend. I'm going to try to conect my current mic, but I need the adaptor first, so I'm going out to try and find it after lunch! ;)

Video Equipment / Sofware / Technique / 5D Mark II Microphone
« on: October 28, 2010, 07:55 »
Hey guys, and girls!

I own a Canon 5D Mark II and I'd like to start shooting video. Unfortunately I don't know much about it. A while ago I bought a Shure microphone to photograph and still have it. I'm wondering if I can use that with my 5D II (it's for an interview sort of thing).

The thing is that the cable from the mic doesn't fit the canon, so my question is, can I use adaptors to make it fit? Would that work?

This is the microphone:

The adaptors I think I need:

The blue (female) one:

and than this one:

Is that possible? I don't want to spend US$200 on a mic just now, so I'm just wondering if that would work at all!

Thanks!

PS: I just found out this cable here:

(told you I didn't know anything about this) :( Would that work? :D

Isn't it a bummer that everyone of the watermarks misses your illustration?  I have the same problem with my photos at fotolio.

True... I think fotolia should rethink their watermark. I have quite a few files that are unprotected there. At least it's the small version, so not much can be done.

Hey everyone..

As requested, my Evoluent Vertical Mouse has arrived and I've started testing it. My first impressions are: wow! Nice, well finished product. It's lightweight and really does keep the wrist in a much better position. It does need some getting used to but in the 10 minutes I've used it so far, seems pretty good.

I'll let you all know once I use it a bit more.. ;)

Thanks Maui... It's a shame it doesn't work, but thanks!

If you want to avoid this in the future, you can reload the .eps file into Illy and use my ExtendedSelect script to check for any embedded bitmap image:

Wow! Thanks as well! I was looking for something like this for ages. For some reason, the one that comes with Illustrator CS5 doesn't work with me (Select - Objects - ________) and yours does! =D

Maui. Here is the AI file - www.megaupload.com/?d=ZLHA780P

Cthoman - They are elliptical indeed. I just don't understand why round ones work and oval ones don't. Is it an Illustrator bug?

Yeah, it may be something else, but I remember reading someone else having the same problem on the Shutterstock forums. I assume the problem is that Illustrator didn't used to support those gradients in older versions. Adobe doesn't really intend for people to save in some ancient version disabling half the features they just created.

Yeah... What is up with that? What is the point of having new and magically amazing features if we have to use the stone age illustrator? When will  microstock agencies realize that this is the XXI century?

Hey there...

As some of you know, I'm starting with illustrations and I've been asking for help from time to time. Here I go again! I recently had this image rejected at Shutterstock because it contains a bitmap. After about 500 tests, I realized that the problem was in the 2 radial gradients. Although the file has more radial gradients, something in these 2 converted them to bitmap when I saved it as EPS10. The file somehow got accepted at Fotolia so you can have a look at the other radial gradients (middle top and bottom right)

I've tried to explain a bit better the situation bellow. It works fine when it's a linear gradient. My question is: why?

I've also uploaded the EPS10 file to megaupload if anyone wants to have a look.

Thanks in advance!

I just came here to mention their logo! I liked their old one! The new one is so amateur-like!

Now available as a standalone Firefox add-on. No need for Greasemonkey extension. All version still available.

Actually it's selfhosted,  it should appear soon on addons.mozilla site.

Any feedback strongly appreciated because it's a premiere.

Any chance of a Chrome Add-on? :)

18
Yup, it can be a pain, but you get used to it.

One other thing I have found, is that I have had vectors rejected because I have used 'vector' in the title or keywords and told only to add that once the actual vector file has been approved. Has not happened on all instances, but a real pain if you get a reject cos of that.

I got the same. The trick is to upload the eps as soon as you submit the jpeg, so they can see that the eps file is pending too! ;)

19
Wow. I wasn't expecting so many replies.

First of all, thanks to everyone. I'm trying to get accepted at iStock as an illustrator but it hasn't been easy. Once I do, I definitely intend on selling vector files there, so I think I'll have to learn a few extra things. I do know how to create shadows and all that on different colored surfaces link in this image (the tree shadow) -

Augusto, I always have a look at your portfolio and you sales on Shutterstock impresses me! That's one of the main reasons I'm attempting illustrations.

I'll now try to make some more challenging images! With me luck!

Ohh... can I use the Mesh Tool? Will it be AI8 ou AI10?

Thanks again!

Illustration - General / Submitting Non-EPS8 compatible files?
« on: October 05, 2010, 13:15 »
Hey there.

I'm starting with vector illustrations for microstock and I'm getting the basics. My (and everyone's, I guess) problem is that all microstock agencies ask for the Illustrator 8 .eps file. How can I submit something that has a transparency or ANY effects not available on Illustrator 8? For example, this image from Augusto Cabral must have some effects that were not available then:

How can I submit some thing with that sort of effect and still being compatible?

Thanks a lot!

21
Hey mate..

Indeed it's not the best vector uploading system out there, but there is something you can do.

After you upload the jpeg and submit them, go on the "pending files" menu and edit the file you want to send the .eps. You can send the .eps file from there even if the jpeg is not yet accepted. It will save you a few days! ;)

Heya...

My table is actually an L shape and I'm now trying to use the side so my arm is better leveled. Let's join that with the new vertical mouse (which will arrive next month) and see if it's all better!

I'll definitely let everyone know the results if the mighty mouse! ;)

I haven't seen the rejections you are talking about (I haven't been uploading much lately) but here is a positive thing that is NOT driving me crazy: I requested a payout yesterday morning and yesterday afternoon I had my money. I give a big thumbs up to that!

+1.  Payouts still coming in on time like clockwork :)

I requested a payout yesterday. I received it today! :D

Just to let everyone know, I just purchased on eBay the Evoluent Vertical Mouse 3 Wireless - http://goo.gl/uFJj

I'll give it a try and if it doesn't help, I'll try another one! But until it arrives (4-6 weeks) I'll have to use my left hand.

Thanks again for all your help.

Thanks for the replies so far!

A few questions:

ichiro17, I had a look at that tablet but is it only usable with a pen or by touch too?

Leaf, I have a tablet, but just works with pen. I need something I can use to do anything, surf the net, etc... I had a look at the touch tablets and they seem quite nifty. I'm just wondering if it's precise enough and practical to use.

PixelAway, I quite liked that SpaceNavigator. I would buy one but it's a bit pricy for me at the moment. I mean, I don't do THAT much editing to need one. I need a more "day-to-day" device.

Thanks again,
Dan
