Dreamstime.com / Re: Dreamstime Upload Issues
« on: July 23, 2012, 13:51 »
Don't know about upload problems, but I uploaded a single image on 1 Jul.  It went online on 2 Jul, but to date has has no views at all.  This seems a bit strange.  It hasn't happened to me before.  DT may be having database problems.

Newbie Discussion / Re: Alamy vs microstock

^^Mine's bigger than yours.  I think so anyway,  stomach in the way.

What I find amazing is how McD makes any money at all.  So many people you meet claim that they would never eat in such establishments, would never let their kids in etc..  Do you think a few porkies are being told?

They're just vending machines on the web.

Excellent analogy.

Yep.  But what do you expect for the prices you get?

General Stock Discussion / Re: Selling Flowers
« on: June 07, 2012, 16:42 »
Do flowers sell.  Do they what!  Go to any marketplace.  Heaps of people buying flowers, especially around Valentine and Mother's Day.

Oh, you mean images?  Don't know.

6
Nope.  DT has absolutely tanked for me.

Very funny.  And isn't it the truth.  A bit like the Apple v Windows issue in some respects.

The problem as I see it is that most of the micros are applying. "more of the same" issue to selecting images.  This is stupid IMO. We have reached saturation of the "stock look" image.  When will the micros take a more forward looking approach and allow  different image styles?    Alamy is one macro agency that does not filter on content, but your technical standards must be high.  And it seems that they are doing very well with this strategy.  Yes, you may not  get multiple sales every day, but the sales you do eventually get return far more than micros.

shall one feather the selection first before saving it to a path? or save the path first then apply the feather option to make the outline looks more natural?

Do not attempt to convert your selection to a path. The path will be so inaccurate that it will be worthless.

Hi Rimglow.
I tried your workflow. It works a treat.  So thanks a lot for that advice.

And I can confirm your advice to mtkang.  Converting a selection to a path does not work. Been there, done that. The only way I've found to get an accurate cut is to use the pen tool, and follow the workflow above.

Thanks Guys.

That's a really good suite of advice.  I'll incorporate slight feathering on selection leave the path in the jpg.

I've just started doing isolations on some of my images (photographs not vector images and mainly inanimate objects.

Does anybody find it advantageous to include the path with the .jpg?

Also, most isolations are with white backgrounds but around 25% have black (on DT at least). I know it doesn't make any difference with designers as they can replace an isolated background with whatever they like. But it may impact on buyer views.   Any comment on background colors for isolations, mainly inanimate objects.

General Stock Discussion / Re: France - regulations
« on: March 26, 2012, 14:05 »
Thanks.
This would seem to be the relevant sentence:
"With the passage of the Presumption of Innocence and Rights of Victims legislation in 2001, the publication of any photograph of a person without their express consent is prohibited in France. This applies to all photography, and is irrespective of editorial or artistic or personal or advertising use."
Pity, I would prefer to go to the Paris Olympia; it's relatively small and many of the other venues are out of doors, and I'm not a great soaking-wet fan.
Thanks for the info; that is as I understood it, just needed confirmation.

Added: irrelevant to my question, but i see that 4020 source sees England and 'the UK' as synonymous, which in legal matters, they're not.

Seems a bit overly restrictive IMO, but every democratic country has the right to set it's own rules based on the wishes of it's citizens.

French newspapers and magazines must find it difficult on editorial matters. How does a French newspaper for instance depict a street scene with people  where obtaining consent is impractical or impossible?

They recommend your camera be at least 12 megapixels, and will accept jpgs no smaller than 26 MB "saved at quality 10 or higher in Photoshop". What 12 megapixel camera produces 26 MB jpgs, especially saved at quality 10?

None.  I think what is meant is 26MB uncompressed (such as a tiff file at 8 bits). The jpg compressed image of such a file will end up around 2 to 6 MB depending on content.

Are you interested in editorial stock?  If not, I'm not.

Sorry.  The question was meant to be posed to Alllyoucanstock, not other contributers.  A few too many wines before dinner I guess.

General Macrostock / Re: arcangel images
« on: October 25, 2011, 04:04 »
Around 200,000 images.  RM requires exclusive images (but not RF).  Seems it takes quite a while to get sales from a few reports obtained by Googling them.  On the upside, lots of art-type imagery which don't seem to have a market in traditional MS.  So for those so inclined it might be an outlet.  The 3 year contract though puts me off a bit, a least initially.

General Photography Discussion / Re: Focus? Hocus Pocus!
« on: October 21, 2011, 22:05 »

This thread has themes last heard in the late 90s and early 00s, "digital will never replace film".

I wouldn't bet my testicales on any predictions that suggest "it" won't happen.  Nobody knows what sort of "its" are out there.  The only certainty is that we will be surprised.

This technology is very early days, just as digital camera were a little over a decade ago.  Look where we are now.

hi Collis

thanks for the conmunications, it's refreshing.

My main focus is editorial stock.  Are you intending to accept such imaging?  If so, I'd be interested.

Although I make my FT living from microstock, I voted for flipping cheeseburgers (actually, you don't flip them once you have added the cheese ;) ).

LOL....have you noticed McDonald's doesn't sell burgers without cheese (at least in the U.S.)?

Taste has to come from somewhere.

The US has exported many wonderful things to the rest of the world.  McDonalds in not one of them :-\

Back to the OP, only if Microstock agency site training has as it's last skill to learn being word perfect in "Would you like fries with that?".  (apologies to Fine Arts students - plagerised from the last area of study in your syllabus) :D

^^. and immediately covered by our universal Medicare, as Holgs would be if medivaced home to AU.  Not sure what would happen if a USAin was medivaced back to the US if the person was a photographer working independently and did  not have private and, seemingly, very expensive medical insurance.

Interesting discussion.  The US is a great country, and they have done wonderful things that have benefitted the wider world.  But on some things it is way behind the eight ball,a safety net type health coverage system in particular.  And let's not even touch on gun control, and export of McDonalds et al.

An opinion only, from someone who has a lot of affection for the US and it's people.

QWERTY above said it well for Australia.  But if I could add that in general our public health system (Medicare) is all inclusive (not dental though unless you have a chronic condition, when dental is covered in some circumstances). There is a 1.5% salary levy, in reality an extra percentage on tax to help pay for it with some additional top up from general revenue.

The end result, as QWERTY outlined is that if someone falls over in the street with a heart attack or equally urgent condition then there is no issue of delay for treatment or  the possibility that the citizen concerned has a sell-your-house moment or faces a bill of any kind.  This is comforting.  Most people down on their luck in this country are there through unfortunate circumstances. Of course there are people who simply will take all they can from other tax payers, but they really are in the minority.

Most here top up our cover with private health insurance.  I get top private cover for around $250 per month.  This is affordable for most people on the average wage or above.

The figures quoted above for the US boggles the mind.  How do lower paid workers afford that type of cover if not covered by their employer, what about if a worker is retrenched how do they get cover?

The issue of the million dollar treatment mention by some is a red herring.  Sure, a very minimal number of such cases would occur, but the vast majority of individual treatment costs would not come near that.

Is it true that up until recently, a health insurance company in the US could refuse cover for pre-existing illnesses, put a cap on treatment, or refuse to reinsure someone who developed a chronic condition?    If so, that such a wealthy country could allow that to happen is a disgrace.   There are ways to provide a safety net health care system without bankrupting a country.

Most civilized developed countries are already doing it.

So if I travel overseas to Australia as a tourist, will I be covered temporarily under Australia's health care system? I'm thinking no, but thought I'd ask anyway.

I never hard that a tourist had to pay anything in my country if he needs to go to a hospital. At least more than a national citizen.

In fact a close family member of a HUGE American politician had an health problem when visiting my country, it was taken to a public hospital and got treatment. And it seemed to have been good treatment since that very important American politician thanked a lot for the care given to his relative. Never heard they were requested to paid for a thing or have they offered to pay for it, since he belongs to a party fiercely against any kind of social medicine...

Despite neither of them haver contributed to my country's Social Security system, I'm proud that she was taken care without hesitation and don't care if they used my taxes for it. It's a question of human rights.

What is your country XPTO?

Depends.  Italy, UK and a few other countries do have reciprical arrangements but in general, no.  You will need your own travel insurance (check major credit card inclusions - some are very good, but you generally have to pay for the travel on the CC).

Instead of rejecting submissions for "Low Commercial Value", allow them to be added but with a probationary period. No sales after 60 days, and then they'll be removed.

This to me seems like a great idea, or some variation of it.
