Alamy.com / Re: QC 5 days?
« on: March 19, 2011, 12:21 »
I was used to almost overnight turn around, then a spot check failed one photo.

I am used to 7 day turnaround if there is a failure.

Is there something unusual going on now, however. I have two uploads of 2 photos each that I have carefully reviewed and submitted. I submitted them on 8 March which is almost two weeks.

I thought I would take this forum's advice and run a couple of photos by you before sending them off to Dreamstime. What do you think?

Alamy.com / Re: Question about the Model Release
« on: November 29, 2010, 15:10 »
The Alamy form really does a good job of showing where the Model and Photographer's information goes. If the clause where the word Consideration is the place you are questioning then what I am saying about giving something of value to receive the rights to the image is what I am trying to talk about.

Put $1 and tell your friend you owe the money if there is a question. Buy your friend a cup of coffee or something. Put "one-cent" if or if you would like put "Nothing." Legally (at least according to what I knew as a Financial Services "Knowledge worker") A contract requires consideration (I will give you X) and performance (if you will do, or give me Y). Without both there is no contract.

Getty's release does it differently, but the result is the same. The first paragraph starts, "For Consideration herein acknowledged received..." and in definitions says "'CONSIDERATION' , means $1 or something else of value..."

The only person who would challenge the consideration in court would be your friend. It is old common law and I would doubt that there would be a challenge from a friend or relative in court. I would not know Alamy's stand. I would guess they have an attorney that would make you put something there, or they would not have left that part in. If it were me, I would put $1.

This question is why I don't do people. I hope there is a lawyer out there that can clarify.

And I didn't think I was going to have to use my left brain today. Oh, well...

The space you illustrate is for the "Consideration" you used to enter into a contract. In most contracts that is money, for instance you paid your model $20 for the model's time. It can also be something of value, such as "8 x 10 Glossy Print of the Image." At least in the U.S. you need to have paid some consideration in order to have a contract. As a Professional or Semi-Pro you can make it "1 hour of Commercial Photography Services." If all else fails, it has been common to place $1 in that spot if actually nothing passed hands.

General Stock Discussion / Re: I Give Up - iStock

Thank you everyone for your insight. I didn't expect this kind of response. Hidden deep within are some excellent ideas for any serious microstocker. I will be taking it to heart.

General Stock Discussion / I Give Up - iStock
« on: November 28, 2010, 20:14 »
I have given up on iStock. I was approved with them some time ago and was thrilled. I've since been approved by alamy and Dreamstime. I know the alamy story of only caring about the technical quality. Dreamstime seems happy with some of mine, we'll see how it goes.

My score with iStock is 2 approved, 7 rejected. I got a bit confused when I had to resubmit the images I had submitted to be accepted to iStock, and they only approved 2 of those. I know, there's no whining about stock, and I'm really not complaining about iStock. I just don't understand.

All of that being said, I'm still waiting out the 30 day waiting period on Sutterstock, about 3 weeks to go.

Where do I go from here, I'm going to run some of these images by you (the forum) so I can get some expert opinions and get the skinny on what I really can submit (and sell).

Cheers from a whiny,

Jim Adams

Hi,

Stock is such an interesting place to offer our works. There are so many opinions as to what not to submit, has anybody got any idea what is hot? In other words what would be a good subject for sales?

I choose not to make shots of things that require releases, therefore no people and no private or personal properties. Am I really missing the boat here?

Last question, RM or RF? I know the difference, is there a benefit to one or the other. I started with all RM, but I am rethinking that RF opens additional markets. True/False?

Alamy.com / My First Sale at Alamy
« on: November 21, 2010, 20:15 »
Hi all,

I'm a newbie and am so glad to find a forum topic that addresses alamy. I am with alamy and have been for about three months. I guess I should feel fortunate that I actually have had my first sale. I've only got 22 images with them now, so again I do feel fortunate. I read about the other sales and I do feel a bit left out. My first sale was under Novel Use and sold for $0.83 after the commission of $0.42 I will get $0.41. Oh well, I need to count my blessings, even thought I really can't count my dollars. I think I might opt-out of NU when I get the chance in April.

I do want to congratulate all of the other sellers, at some time I hope to join your ranks.

This is the reason forums are so valuable. I know I don't have to go it alone, there is a bunch of help from you guys.

The images on the JGAdams Photo Gallery (Zenfolio) are actually High res, but a better way will to do as suggested, show the forum the rejections for critique. That will happen. I just signed up for Dreamstime and uploaded five images, we'll see what happens.

A note about Nature and Wildlife, that is my passion, but I completely understand it is not stock fodder. There are a few of my images on the JGA site under other images, but stock is a different animal.

You don't have to go poking around my site, unless of course, you want to. I'm sure I will have plenty of discussions. What I have already received is very valuable.

Thank you all,

Jim

Occasionally I have my weak moments, like trying to submit a hand held 1/30 image at iso1600. I just need confirmation that I am not too far off track. I often think with stock agencies you just need to be persistent and they eventually accept you because you have proven you are serious. I'll keep plugging away and continue to be careful. I do need to remember to scrutinize the photos, I usually use 200%, if they pass my eyes at 200, they will pass their 100% hopefully.

I have had opinions from some very knowledgeable pros (took a couple of online courses) that the xsi is on the border and over iso200 you get noise. I just need to make enough to get my dream camera - 5D MkII.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Newbie Discussion / Greetings from a Newbie

Hi all.

I am new to stock and as most stock newbies I need all the help I can get. I am with alamy and have actually sold one image through them. I was also accepted by iStock, but I cannot seem to get them anything they like. I've been working at Shutterstock, same story, two attempts rejected.

I do love to make pictures. Whenever the world is trying to overcome me I jump in the truck and make some pictures. I have recently opened my own store online (this is not spam, you don't have to go there.)

I would appreciate the forum's opinion about my experience. Many of the rejections are "soft focus". I shoot with a Canon EOS xsi. I am aware of the limitations. When preparing stock images I use a tripod, ISO 100, I try to keep around f11 and over 1/100 or if I am using telephoto 1/400. It kind of limits my opportunities. I also use Canon L lenses. Is there something within this that I am doing wrong, other than the consumer camera?

I do want to run photos by the experts (you) before I try iStock or Shutterstock again.

I really am thrilled to be with this forum and hope I fit in OK.

Thanks,
Jim Adams
