Photo Critique / Re: Isolation shot critique
« on: April 24, 2015, 01:15 »
- Different white balance is due to your flash tubes fluctuating in white balance; this is common for cheaper flashes. Pro flashes are much more consistent. Just put in a grey card on all your shots, do the white balancing automatic on that in adobe camera raw (og whatever you use), and clone the grey card out of the image once you've used it.
(Note: if you shoot in JPG, you need to lock your white balance to 5500K in your camera)

- Perfect white background requires post processing here. It should take around 1-2 minutes for each image with Photoshop. Using Photoshop CC, simply:
1) With Quick Selection Tool (shortcut: w) select the part you want to keep.
2) Use Select > Refine mask (shortcut: ALT+CTRL+r) and adjust radius until it looks perfect. Use this mask to couple a mask layer on to your background layer (unlock it first). Put a layer of perfect white underneath it.
3) If any trouble areas still exist, use a Wacom digitizer or similar tablet device, to manually take care of it.

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia views climbing rapidly
« on: April 23, 2015, 06:06 »
My number of sales on Fotolia here in April, are the highest for many months already. So I'm breaking my record on Fotolia in number of sales. Compared to the other stock sites my images are featured on (iStock, ShutterStock, Dreamstime, 123rf, deposit, alamy, pond5, bigstock, envato, canstock), Fotolia is in the lead for this month (in sales; not in income). All my sales on Fotolia this month are subscription.

My number of views though, are unchanged; but in the period 23. of February - 27. of February, I had 12 times more daily views than my average.

Veer / Veer contributor workspace and dashboard
« on: April 18, 2015, 03:04 »
Hey - all of a sudden, my workspace and dashboard have become inaccessible to me.

Veer just continues to show the page with informations for contributors; and yes, I'm logged in. :)

This sudden change happened 17. of April, late in the afternoon.

Anyone else experiencing this?

Sorry for asking a stupid question here; I'm a Shutterstock contributor, but I don't know what "facebook sales" are...? Can anyone elaborate on this?

I had 18 rejected abstract designs because 5 had the word ECRU to describe the color of the lace    so I am very puzzled as to the reason=Spelling / Grammar -- Image contains spelling or grammatical errors.
I have sent them the details etc and will be interesting to see  why ECRU is wrong spelling , grammar.
Very very frustrated !!!!

Maybe the reviewers doesn't have English as a native language...? I'm from Denmark, and I must admit that I had to google ECRU :D - I think I'd call it "dusty sand color" or something like that, and maybe in a partly drunken state (or if I were really busy) where I forgot that Google exists, I'd think that ECRU was the name of a corporation. Something along these lines could certainly explain why your images were rejected...

Print on Demand Forum / Re: Keyword Spamming on Skreened
« on: April 09, 2015, 14:23 »
I've never tried selling my photos or designs through shirt agencies; but your post here may inspire me to do so (just not at Skreened, after what you wrote).

Keyword spamming is a problem in general; I'm afraid that agencies (in general) don't take matters seriously, unless more than 1 member is complaining about the same artist/image.

What about your other cost? Studio rent, equipment rent, equipment purchase, travel cost, utilities, etc etc. You need to factor in all cost, not just the cost for a model.

I do not factor in much of this in stock; as I'm already factoring these things in to my paid sessions. I'm not a professional stock photographer; I'm a freelance photographer first, and stock photographer second. So I have the equipment anyway, and use stock to .... hmmm mostly because it's funny.

I usually don't rent anything, and being an ambassador, my newer camera equipment was for free. But I definitely see your point.

But it'd be a very complicated calculation; and I'm not sure that Charged meant we should go so precise, in his initial post...? I may be wrong though. :)

Canva / Re: Canva

Just wanna say I'm impressed with how Lee manages to answer all requests in this thread!  :o 8) Very cool!

I just applied for contributor on Canva - solely because of this thread. I don't know if I'll get through - but my point is, that Lee's support and writings here, are very reassuring and promising for how Canva is run.

I saw that there's a brand new update for Microstockr as of today; and guess what - it fixes ShutterStock and Colobox!! :D

123rf is not fixed yet - and I haven't been able to verify ColorBox as I haven't got any profile there - but ShutterStock works, and that was the most important thing for me. :)

So - thanks to the guys at Microstockr for a nice patch. :)

What you experience isn't exactly Microstockr's fault; your grip is with the Apple devices sync (or lack of). I only know the procedure for the Apple iPad, and it sounds like you have Android, which I tend to avoid.

But then again - is it that much of a hassle to put in your login credentials again...? I know your write it's 30-ish, but it's only that one time... It'd be much faster if you just did that, instead of trying to google a solution, or wait for others to give you one. :)

General - Top Sites / Re: iStock and Shutterstock web traffic
« on: April 09, 2015, 08:23 »
As fewer chooses to install Java, and more and more are aware of removing the Alexa toolbar, I guess traffic on all websites decreases (according to Alexa stats). The distorted image becomes worse, as the people who do have the Alexa toolbar installed, also are the least IT capable. Most of them are in no way in our direct target group, as most of the people who decides to buy (or not to buy) our images, are graphic designers.

Working with models, I pay them roughly 17.5 USD per hour. I usually shoot with another friend of mine, and we run for 2 hours. The model will thus earn 35 USD for 2 hours.

During these 2 hours, I end up with around AT LEAST 15-20 usable stock files, that are also accepted by all agencies. Often more.

Calculating pessimistic, let's say 15 are accepted; this means I have to be able to earn 1.17 USD per image, in average - combined for all agencies. I'm on 12 agencies now, so this means I have to make 0.098 USD per image per agency, in order to break even.

I think it's safe to say I can break even; but it takes quite some time before my own hourly wage is at an acceptable level; even in more optimistic cases.

I'm a contributor on ShutterStock, iStock, Dreamstime, Fotolia, BigStock, 123rf, CanStock, Deposit, CreStock, Alamy and Veer. I've been submitting to stock since 2007.

My experience with ShutterStock is that they hands down, by far, are the most inconsistent of all the bureaus, when it comes to what is accepted and what is rejected.

Noone are as inconsistent as ShutterStock - noone comes remotely close. It's absurd, but the trick is to not let the frustrations get the better of you.

On ShutterStock, I've tried to have 4 out of 10 images in studio shoot accepted - and the last 6 rejected becaues of noise. All shot at ISO 100, none of them boosted in exposure in post production. All 10 very identical in image quality, due to them having been shot in rapid succession (but very different poses and accessories for the model). Then, a week after, they accepted 4 out of 4 images, that were all shot at ISO 6400 with no noise reduction applied. I was like: What .??

If you get images bounced because of noise and/or artifacts, you can try to resize the images to fx. 4 - 6 MPixels size. That actually helps me most of the time.
