General Stock Discussion / Re: Royalty split feature
« on: February 04, 2015, 17:36 »
Thanks for your replies.

Sean, I'll try to make it more clear.
Let's assume that I'm planning a very complex shoot with many models involved, permissions to be obtained, equipment to be rented. I don't want to bear all the costs and I know a talented photographer that may add creative value to the shoot and share the costs.

Why don't partner with him on that shoot? Two brains and 2 cameras working creatively together may come up with great ideas and definitely have more fun. A contract would also help to make things clear from the start :)

Instead of creating a new account on 10 agencies starting from scratch, waiting for the application process, struggling with reviewers pixel peeping your images because you're a "new contributor", I'd rather prefer to upload contents under my account. I have a high rank and 99% approval rate.
I think this would give more visibility to these new pictures as well, since many buyers follow my work.

Let's say that I and my fellow photographer produced 100 pictures and agreed a 60%/40% share of revenues. Every time a licence is sold, the royalty would be automatically split by the agency with the percentage that we agreed. I would get my 60%, him his 40%.
If he lives in a Country which doesn't have a tax treaty with the US, he would get his royalty with the 30% withholding rate, as it would be withhold by the agency itself.

Jo, you're right when you say that I can work with someone on a project without get the agency involved. I've been doing it in the past on Cultura (now Imagesource) and Blend. But it's a pain. That's why I'm writing this post. Because I've been spending a lot of time reviewing sales, calculating shares, sending a statement to the other photographer (blurring and masking my own sales for privacy), making bank transfers, etc.

I wish I could do more teamwork, I do believe it's better than working on my own. But I think that photographers should focus on pictures, agencies on accounting issues.

I hope it sounds clearer now and apologize for my English as it's not my native language.

All the best,
Diego

General Stock Discussion / Royalty split feature
« on: February 04, 2015, 08:16 »
Hi all,

Recently I'm writing to all the agencies I'm working with to allow us to share royalties with other contributors who collaborate on specific projects.
Revostock already has this feature and calls it "Royalty split".

According to Revostock, "The Royalty Split feature will allow you to share your earnings from a particular file with another RevoStock Producer. This is useful if you work together with another producer on a media file. You will need to designate which producer to share earnings with when you upload your media.

Basically, to date contributors are very limited when collaborating with each other on a single shoot or a series of projects. It happened to me many times to refuse a collaboration for just a reason: ACCOUNTING and TAX ISSUES!
Sharing royalties with 2 or more co-authors is not an easy task as you have to either create new accounts for each different collaboration, or publishing co-produced contents under the account of one of the authors and rely on his good faith when he tells you how much you earned. Not to mention that if you work internationally, you should deal with complex tax issues when your co-authors leave in a Country which has not the same "withholding rate" with the US as yours.

The Revostock feature is just brilliant. No accounting problems, no math, no annoyance.

Why do I need to collaborate with other people?
Well, after 8 years in microstock, I believe that we are at a point where the return per image on simple and low budget shoots has diminished too much. I think it's better to partner with other people for sharing creativity, techniques, equipment, models and resources to finance complex and highly rewarding shoots.

If you think that this feature would help you as well, please feel free to copy and paste this message below and send it to the agencies you work with. The more we are the better.

"Hi,

I'm writing you because I would like you to consider a very convenient feature for contributors.
It's called "Royalty split feature" and has been already implemented by Revostock.

According to Revostock, "The Royalty Split feature will allow you to share your earnings from a particular file with another RevoStock Producer. This is useful if you work together with another producer on a media file. You will need to designate which producer to share earnings with when you upload your media.

I think this would be very simple to implement on your side because it's just a matter of sharing the royalties generated from a file between two or more contributors that are already registered on your website.
On the other hand, it would dramatically simplify our life, as we wouldn't be anymore involved in many issues, such as time-consuming reviews of our sales to make sure that any co-producer gets the right share, tax issues, creating different accounts for any "creative" partnership we want to carry on, etc.

I hope you got the general idea of this feature and to see it available in the near future.
I'm confident that many people would appreciate your effort and consider it very welcome.

Thanks for your kind attention.
Best regards."

I got around 200$ of fraudolent sales in Jan....at least according to istock as I have to assume they are not fooling me!
They didn't even provide a total so I had to do the math by myself!!

Count me in for an audit.

Other than wondering which action istock is taking against this fraud, what I really don't understand is why they take our money back! Aren't credit card companies and istock insured?
It's like pretending that Visa or Mastercard claims money back from a shop owner because his customer paid with a cloned credit card. I never saw this happening and in all honesty I can't believe different rules apply to istock.
Some years ago I had my natwest debit card cloned but they refunded me all the money that have been stolen from my account.

David,
Apparently there are new problems with bigstock. Images upload successfully but keywords, description etc do not appear on BS.
What's wrong with them??
Thanks

Each store has its own licensing agreement, we provide the starting point which each store owner can change or replace. That is the agreement buyers accept as the transaction is between them and the store owner direct - we just provide the software to do so.

Unfortunately I expect that buyers will get really confused by this approach.

The idea behind your site is not bad, but having a common framework for licensing (either RF or RM) saves time to people. What if a buyer is looking only for RF images? this very basic search is not possible on your website.
And even if he finds a bunch of RF images, then he should read all terms&conditions on each store because each artist may have changed the agreement and restrict some usages.
For instance, I've seen an image of a laptop computer with the windows logo on it. There is no mention if it's RM or RF. The title on the page states "royalty free image", but this is really confusing since there is no info about release!

Sorry to say it, but I feel that if something is not clear and easy to understand, people will shop elsewhere.

...and I have to pay you to upload ??? NO THANKS!...let me know when it changes the other way around... ;)
Its not a stock library like iStock, you get your own store, you set the prices and you get paid 100% of the sales. You pay us for storage, bandwidth, processing power and maintaining the software. Sign up for a day, have a play around, see how you like it and then cancel it - there is nothing to lose.

sorry, but what about licensing? I can't find any RF agreement, terms & conditions for buying images and permitted usage. Which agreement buyers are going to accept before downloading a picture?
Besides, I signed up out of curiosity and I had to fill just a few fields....no address, country, no ID card, basically you will never know who I am!! Now, does this apply to buyers as well? There are frauds going on everyday on big agencies that I would be very concerned to sell my photos through a website that collects no data from people. Since you are not acting as a traditional agency, I wonder what happens in case a buyer misuse our images??

Hi David,
I think lightburner is still not uploading on bigstock. I tried it yesterday but it didn't work.
thanks

I agree with Lisa.
Sigma lenses are not that good IMO. I had the 24-70 some years ago and I sold it right after a few months. Unless my lens was faulty, I experienced lots of flare and ghosts. Plus, it's not as sharp as canon and you have to push sharpness in post.
The only lens I recommend from sigma is the fisheye, which always finds a place in my bag. But it's not much cheaper than the canon 15mm.

Diego

If we want to speculate, why not speculate about what copyright infringements they would talk about? His portfolio is at DT if anyone wants to see.

Now, would make sense to someone who is culprit of copyright infringement to come here and start a thread about this as FD did? Unless this infringement is something that he wasn't aware of - hard to imagine from someone with the knowledge he has ever shown here - and therefore probably something any of us would be unaware of.

I still believe he is not culprit and it's not his current silence that will make me believe otherwise. Having no reason to believe SS/BigStock are right, those believing his silence is a sign of guilt are just speculation indeed.

I'm sorry about the harassment, nruboc, it's completely uncalled for, even if I disagree with your position.
+1

sooner or later the Scarlet will be released, which as far as I know will be priced much much lower.
Not that I'm going to buy it, but it will be nice to see how other brands like canon, panasonic and sony will react.
I read that the entry level scarlet will shoot 3K raw footages, autofocus and will have very fast fps.
Let's see!!

OMG! Only just saw this thread. Sorry to hear this, FD!

Why terminating his account should have anything to do with any opinions FD has voiced over here on topics that have nothing to do with what he is being accused of, is beyond me. I hope he'll be able to sort it all out.

What about independants that are inspectors, say at Fotolia? Aren't they allowed to submit to SS? And is that stated somewhere in the SS contract?

me too!
I'm so sorry FD. We are with you!

I just wanted to ask you if it's possible to keep the thumbnails of the pictures uploaded on LB after automatic removal. Otherwise I can't see how analytics will work since contents will be deleted.

Hi Diego,
Are not they kept? I was sure they are, as well as the 400px previews. At least it was designed for that... Do we have an issue here?

David,
the test picture I uploaded last week has been automatically removed. I got an email about automatic removal with one day notice.
Am I doing something wrong with settings? I checked my account out but I can't find any option to store previews on the site.
Thanks!

Hello David,

Thanks for addressing some bugs.
I still experience duplicates with crestock and canstock. Pictures do not always show up at Alamy.
That being said, this tool works much better now!

I just wanted to ask you if it's possible to keep the thumbnails of the pictures uploaded on LB after automatic removal. Otherwise I can't see how analytics will work since contents will be deleted.

Fotolia: Files delivered to Fotolia go directly to the approval queue, as long as they have all the metadata in place. The same is correct for iStock and many others. So @zenpix' original question is the right one - does Fotolia count that?

Hi David,
the problem with pushing files straight to the FT approval queue is that we cannot add model releases at that stage. Good for still life, but not for images showing people  ;)
Keep on the good work!

Leaf, thank you so much for posting this interview. Quite useful!

I wonder why if istock stresses so much on footage they don't hire a few more reviewers. As far as I know a footage needs weeks to get inspected, right?

Best,
Diego

Looks to me like you're out-voted Jonathan. Take yet another 'Bull-Sh!t Badge' for your nonsensical and misleading posts. In truth you don't know too much about this game as proven by your sales record in micro. Judging by that you're the wrong side of 'Average' and certainly no expert as you like to pretend. Somehow though you are actually very good at persuading newbies that you are a guru and long may you continue to mine that vein if it provides you with some income or fluffs up your ego.

Btw, taking an opposite point of view to you isn't 'aggressive' and it is actually allowed. It seems that you squeal "Unfair" every time that you lose an an argument. Heigh-ho.

Did I miss something? Was it a competition and you're the winner?
I'm sure that Jonathan doesn't need my support but I think that someone here should learn some very basic good manners when expressing his own point of view..... at least to let us not going through a bunch of 'aggressive' posts every time that one shares his opinions!

Cheers,
Diego
