Pond5 / Re: exclusive with pond5
« on: April 14, 2024, 20:23 »
As I mentioned in another thread, exclusive did not work out well for me. Previously, I was happy with my sales I was getting beforehand (even with a tiny port size.) I could see that P5 had great potential with the sales that I saw coming in. Well that all stopped as soon as I opened an exclusive account and moved all my videos to it. Since then, sales are super rare and are almost non existant.

Okay, my port is back.

Pond5 / My port has been mostly emptied
« on: April 12, 2024, 21:55 »
This morning, I discovered that my P5 port has been reduced to one video. I have no idea what has happened to all of my other videos. I have logged into my account on two different computers (not at the same time) and tried different browsers. The results are the same - only one video remaining. I have contacted support.

In the agency settings you can selects if you want to sell the rights or not.

I don't recall seeing that option in Stocksubmitter. I'll have to take a look.

5
Yea I know it has nothing to do with Stocksubmitter. Though regardless, it still happens (probably with any kind of upload system or method.) With a service, like Stocksubmitter, it's not a case of 'set and forget.' One still needs to remember to edit the files afterwards in DT and deselect that selling of the rights option.

I didn't know there was a bulk disable option.

6
Recently, Ive been submitting some videos to DT with Stocksubmitter. And I just happened to click on one of those videos that had been accepted into my port. That video, and all of my other commercial videos, are marked with "Sell the rights." I quickly disabled that option from all the files that I submitted with Stocksubmitter.

When you upload content normally to DT (via their web uploader) I note that files are marked with "Sell the rights" as default which is ridiculous. I'm sure that the majority of contributors have no intention of selling the rights to most of their images. I should have realised that the same thing would happen with files that were submitted with Stocksubmitter. It was only by chance that I decided to click on one of these uploaded video files in my port and I made the unfortunate discovery.

And then I remembered that I had also uploaded videos with Stocksubmitter last year and for all that time, they had been marked with "Sell the rights" and I never realised until now.

Pond5 / Can't edit my metadata
« on: April 10, 2024, 19:37 »
Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this issue on P5. At first, I tried to make some changes to my keywords for one of my videos on P5 on the laptop. But nothing happens when I click Save. I tried a few times but no luck.

I then tried to do the same thing on my pc and that did work. Then I tried to add some more keywords to another video (on my pc) and I'm having no success. No matter how many times I click Save, nothing happens. Seems like I can't make changes to the metadata anymore on P5.

I cleared my browsing data in google chrome but that makes no difference.

Just to clarify, with regards to non subscription sales, would we still get a significantly higher value sale for a 4k video compared to a HD video sale?

Pond5 / Re: Pond5 sales picking up in March 2024
« on: March 23, 2024, 02:17 »
I've been on P5 for nearly a year. Never sold anything. Have around 800 clips.

Myself and others have had similar experiences when starting out at P5. It can take a very long time for the sales to start. And when they do eventually start, it's like the flood gates are open and more will follow. It took many long months of waiting for my first sale there. And then other sales came shortly after.

Alright, thanks a lot. I thought I need to be exclusive to sell videos on there
Or doesn't matter?

Oh man, I had a really bad experience when I opened up an exclusive account. Previously, I was doing very well on P5 with an extremely small video port. Sales were good. There would even be occasions where I would sell a video one week and then sell another clip the following week - all with a tiny port. As soon as I opened up an exclusive account and moved some of my videos to it, my sales dropped like a rock. And they never recovered. So yea sales these days at P5 are an extremely rare occurrence for me. I stuck with the exclusive account for about a year and then moved those videos back to my non exclusive account but it didn't make any difference to sales.

I just did a test with some photos (using Stocksubmitter to submit them to Dreamstime.) They were editorial images and I selected the top editorial checkbox within Stocksubmitter. When they were submitted to DT, I checked the page where images were held for review and noted that these particular photos all had an editorial license. So this confirms that the top editorial checkbox is the one to select in Stocksubmitter (not the bottom one.)

What happens when you check the bottom box?

If you check the bottom editorial box instead of the top one, the images will be submitted as commercial. That's what's happened to me in the past. However, if you do intend to submit commercial content, I recommend keeping both boxes unchecked.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Monthly earnings and downloads

My understanding is that we are not allowed to publicly share our earnings on Shutterstock.

Fortunately, this isn't Shutterstock. We're on MSG.

Ouch! It's a good thing that I don't submit videos to iStock.

I admit I don't know much about Canva.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Is Shutterstock dead?
« on: February 25, 2024, 18:54 »
If this is the new normal for Shutterstock (and I really hope it isn't) then this imho is a collapse of the agency in terms of its revenues from image and video sales. I'm astounded at the depth and velocity of its fall but maybe I shouldn't be so surprised. It's predictable.

  • First, you slash contributor earnings for a quick profit boost
  • You fully decentivize your main contributor base
  • Your bulk of quality contributors stop uploading - and instead upload their fresh quality content to other agencies (your competition) that treat their contributors with more respect
  • A large segment of your customer buyers and subscribers just naturally follow the better, fresh, quality content where contributors are uploading
  • Your sales, revenues and profits drop.

I remember some years ago when Getty / iStock drastically reduced contributor commissions and SS acknowledged at the time that they were dealing with a huge influx of new contributors joining up (who were obviously deserting iStock in droves.) It's just crazy that SS did not learn from this. They clearly observed with the iStock situation that when an agency slashes contributor commissions, there will be a large contributor exodus. Surely, they must have been expecting that to happen. Well history repeats itself.

If you go ahead, make sure that you watermark those videos.

the AI models are evolving so fast that in no times customer will no longer need to look into a library. Not a second. They will generate what they want and with tons of option, styles etc.

I think there will always be a demand for editorial photos.

19
I hope it works out well for you. The stock footage industry is in such a bad state right now (and we can blame SS for that.)

Okay, I think I'll perform a test (in order to get my answer.) Usually, I use Stocksubmitter to submit videos. Though for the test, I'll submit some editorial photos to Dreamstime. I'll select the editorial checkbox near the top of Stocksubmitter (Ive got a feeling that may possibly be the right one.) Then I'll check the files in review on DT. If they are all marked as editorial within DT, I guess that would indicate that the top checkbox is the right one to select.

Adobe Stock / Re: Adobe have updated their terms of use
« on: February 17, 2024, 18:17 »

Regarding the editorial rules, you can crop and clone as long as you aren't making a material change. The illustrative editorial guidelines were last updated in August 2022: "Only post-process or crop if you can do so without changing the context or meaning of the content. "

Yes, cropping is fine. Though there is no mention of the acceptability of cloning out people or objects or other details. I'm not sure if this line is new or was already part of the existing terms of use: "....the Work truthfully depicts the subject" (in regards to editorial images.)

The very long link you posted had some strange behavior - a screen saying if I didn't accept the terms of use I'd be unable to continue using Adobe apps and services!

Yep, I got that message too after first signing into Adobe! Typically strict of Adobe.

Regarding the term about uploading or not removing works meaning you agree with pricing changes, I think they're trying to say that if you don't agree with changes, you have to remove your work (they don't say how quickly), not that if you remove one file 1 year after a pricing change that signals you don't agree.

Yea later on, I figured that's likely what it means.

23
It's been a while since Ive used Stocksubmitter. I recall there are two editorial checkboxes (one up high and one down below.) When submitting editorial files, should you select the higher checkbox or the lower one? It's been so long that I can't remember which one to select.

I thought this was interesting: "You grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual, fully-paid, and royalty-free license to use, reproduce, publicly display, publicly perform, distribute, index, translate, and modify the Work....."

In particular the words "fully paid." I'm hoping that doesn't mean we have to now pay Adobe when submitting stock content! Or perhaps it's referring to the commissions they receive from sales of our work.

And this bit is interesting too. "For Work designated "editorial use only," you represent and warrant that: (1) the Work truthfully depicts the subject; (2) all corresponding keywords, descriptions, credits, and captions are accurate and are neither deceptive nor misleading; and (3) the Work has not been modified in a way that alters its editorial context or integrity. You agree that we may apply the designation of a Work as "editorial use only" where deemed appropriate by us."

I guess this means we can't clone out people (and perhaps other objects too) in illustrative editorial images.

I thought this was a little odd: "By continuing to submit or upload Works or by NOT removing Works, you are agreeing to any new Pricing and Payment Details as revised from time to time."

Though what if you do remove works? Would that indicate that you're not agreeing to new Pricing and Payment Details?

Buyers may argue that the subject matter is the same regardless of file size.

Yes, there could be a choice between a 4k and a HD version of the same footage. The content will be exactly the same. However, the 4k version will allow the buyer to crop the footage extensively and still end up with a decent amount of resolution. And I would say that places a higher value on the 4k version. Plus the 4k version will also have a potentially wider range of applications (eg usage in big screen movies.)
