Newbie Discussion / Adobe Stock FTP Uploads Slow?
« on: September 12, 2023, 08:16 »
When I'm uploading my 4K clips to Adobe Stock, they only upload at around 270 KB/sec. It has always been this way. Is this typically the upload speed everyone else gets? I can get much faster speeds when I upload to shutterstock, pond5, etc (easily in the low MB/sec, rather than hundreds of KB/s like Adobe).

Has anyone received their 1099-MISC from Envato/Videohive yet? I haven't received mine yet and it also doesn't appear under the tax summaries section yet either. I made between $600 and $20,000 USD on Envato this year (both Envato Market and Envato Elements combined).

3
I'm a US resident, and I signed into Envato/Videohive to view my 2022 tax documents and noticed there was a "Australian Royalty Withholding Tax" for July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022 document. I don't believe this was ever mailed to me, and it doesn't show up anywhere on the 2021 1099 form that I was sent last year.

I was completely unaware a royalty withholding existed, and I essentially completely ignored it when completing my taxes last year.

Was I supposed to complete some kind of US/Australia tax treaty document to account for this? Nothing on my 2021 1099-misc indicated any type of withholding whatsoever. All it showed was the "royalties" box.

It's also odd that it starts in the middle of the year, from mid 2021 to mid 2022. I don't really understand this.

For those in the US who also sell on Envato, how do you handle this on your tax return (Schedule C I assume, that's what I use anyway)?

Just got an email from Paypal today about the threshold being lowered down to $600.

You've received $600+ in goods and services payments this year which the IRS considers taxable income. PayPal will make it easy for you by tracking your commercial income and sending you a 1099-K early next year. PayPal supports businesses by including Purchase Protection on eligible purchases, providing tools and reporting to help businesses run smoothly, and more.

Does this mean all my 1099 income from Adobe Stock, Shutterstock, Pond5, etc. are going to be double reported this year?

Has anybody been able to get this to work using Python? Nothing I try works and I'm wondering if anybody else has had success. I use Python to automate all my uploads rather than using the GUI of an FTP client.
I dont know anything about Python
But have you already looked for an SFTP library?
Or an SFTP upload example?

I have been able to get it to work using WinSCP through the GUI. However, I have not been able to get it to work with WinSCP's command line interface. I thought maybe using a Python SFTP library would help but I have had no luck there either (I just get exceptions thrown). At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if it's Python or any other programming language, what matters is that it can be done via command line so I can automate it.

Also, I upload videos, not images, so I have to use SFTP, I can't do it through Adobe's online interface.

[accidentally posted twice somehow].

These responses are not helpful. I am obviously going to pay my taxes but I need to know how to prevent it from getting double reported. Besides my earnings are so massive I could never incur enough expenses to completely write them off. Unless investments count as expenses (joking).

General Stock Discussion / PayPal 1099Ks Incoming
« on: January 12, 2022, 14:25 »
For everyone based in the US, now that PayPal will issue us 1099Ks starting for tax year 2022, how will we handle this considering we also have 1099-MISCs reported by Shutterstock/AdobeStock/Pond5/etc? That means the income will be double reported. What is the correct way to handle this? Do we report it twice and write it off once somewhere? Only report it once? I don't want the IRS to think I'm underreporting my income when in actuality it was simply sent to them twice.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Envato Elements?
« on: October 27, 2021, 23:09 »
Yes, Envato owns both. The offer is for 90 days after upload, per clip, but runs until the 3rd of May, so anything uploaded on the 3rd of February or before will get the full 90 day bonus. I'd ignore the estimates they've come up with as I've no idea how they figured those out. Some people earn less than what they do on VideoHive and some people earn more (some considerably more), so it's impossible to give a prediction. However, I've never heard of anybody earning less on Elements and the marketplace combined, than they do just being on the marketplace... so, if you're already on VideoHive, and you're happy to carry on selling there, then it makes sense to join Elements.

The way the email explains it says that my items will be transferred from Videohive to Elements. You suggest that I can continue selling my items on both. Do they let me sell the same item on both platforms?

Personally, I don't think very highly of Team Envato but that is just me  :-\

I'm already selling on Videohive, I just don't know if there's much of a benefit to selling on "Envato Elements" vs. Videohive. I think Envato owns both.

General Stock Discussion / Envato Elements?
« on: October 26, 2021, 08:07 »
I have been uploading my videos to VideoHive and selling them directly there. I recently got this email:

Quote
Hi [my name],

Your Videohive portfolio caught our attention and we think it would be a great fit on Envato Elements!

Thats why were inviting you, a valued Videohive Author, to join Envato Elements and take advantage of Triple Rewards for Video Authors on Elements.

Joining Envato Elements is an invitation-only opportunity, allowing authors like you to reach new customers and earn more from your new and existing Motion Graphics items on Videohive.

How much can I earn with Envato Elements?
To help you understand how much you could earn with Envato Elements, weve provided an estimate based on the average earnings per item for Motion Graphics on Elements.

Including Triple Rewards, you could expect to earn $ 190.00 - $ 220.00 per month, based on your portfolio of 120 Motion Graphics (on Videohive).

Triple Rewards is calculated as twice your usage fee earnings on Envato Elements customer item downloads of your Motion Graphics items, for 90 days.

Please note that this is an estimate only and may be less depending on the commercial demand of whether customers are looking for the type of items you create.

What do I need to know?
Selling Motion Graphics on Elements is an all-in deal. We will automatically transfer your Motion Graphics items from your VideoHive portfolio onto your Elements portfolio. This will happen one time for all of your existing content then on an ongoing basis for all new content you upload to VideoHive.

This sounds great! How do I get involved?
All you need to do is submit an Envato Elements application.

Once youve applied for Elements, youll need to pass an account history check and an author ID check. This provides a trusted environment for our customers and authors to conduct business, and maintain the success of our community.

Once youve been approved we will transfer your existing items from Videohive to Elements and you will triple your usage fee earnings on new and existing Motion Graphics items for 90 days from the date of publication!

Click here to check out the terms and conditions.

Thanks,

Team Envato

Is this worth doing? For reference I have been earning around $160 per month on average and the range they provided there isn't much higher. I'm not sure I understand any potential drawbacks of doing this.

I don't know if anybody uses the commandline features of their FTP clients, but I do. I have been using winscp to upload all my files to the various stock footage websites and now that Adobe moved to SFTP I cannot for the life of me figure out how to upload to it using command line.

Has anybody figured this out? If you use a different ftp client, I'm open to using that as well. I just need to automate it somehow.

https://www.twrblog.com/2021/03/american-rescue-plan-act-clarifies-scope-of-form-1099-k-reporting-and-reduces-de-minimis-threshold/

I guess the threshold for getting a 1099K from PayPal will be $600 going forward, so it looks like this will start applying to me. If Shutterstock/Adobe Stock/Pond5/etc. are submitting 1099-MISCs to the IRS and PayPal submits a 1099K as well, then I'm going to have my income reported twice. Obviously I shouldn't have to pay taxes on the income twice.

How do you account for this on a schedule-C?

NFTs have proven themselves as a way for larger artists to make decent, if not significant, extra income in the past few months specifically. I realize that they may not be as relevant for stock footage, but my guess is that they still have potential. Has anybody tried creating and selling NFTs, and if so, on what platforms?

Newbie Discussion / Re: Tax Questions (Dreamstime and Dissolve)

The stock agencies have no idea which accounting method I use. That has nothing to do with whether or not they send a 1099.

Newbie Discussion / Tax Questions (Dreamstime and Dissolve)
« on: February 12, 2021, 01:47 »
I have a few questions regarding taxes with Dreamstime and Dissolve.

I made some sales on Dreamstime in 2020 but never reached the payout threshold (only made $90). I have not received any tax form and don't see anything in my account. Will they only send you a 1099 if they actually pay out to you in a given year?

I made around $100 on Dissolve in 2020, which they paid out to me. Never got a tax form and I don't see one digitally. Emailed them but haven't heard back yet. Will they send me a 1099-MISC? Or do they only send one if I earn more than $600?

If we're suddenly seeing so many of these, are we thinking that this is a change made by Shutterstock (maybe they have gotten better at determining if transactions are fraudulent) or are we thinking there has simply been a rise in fraudulent purchases recently? Any idea which one it might be, or possibly something else?

I had four sales removed for the first time this month, losing out on over $100. I've never had any adjustments before, but I've only been on Shutterstock since July 2019.

Can I write this off my schedule C as a business expense?

21
2020 was my first year earning a significant amount from selling stock. I have only ever had W2 income before then, so self-employment income is basically brand new to me. Do you guys fill out form 8995 (Qualified Business Income Deduction - Simplified Calculation) as a sole proprietor? Does stock income count as "Qualified Business Income?" If so, how do you calculate the qualified business income or (loss) (line c)?

My understanding that it would be calculated as the Net profit or loss from Schedule C minus the sum of lines 14 through 16 on Schedule 1 (deductible part of SE tax, any self-employed pretax retirement account contributions, and self-employed health insurance deductions, respectively). Does that sound right to you?

Also, as a sole proprietor, would the business name (line a) just be my name?

Newbie Discussion / 1099 Taxes based on payout or earnings?
« on: December 27, 2020, 01:51 »
Let's say I earn $100 in December 2020 on Adobe Stock but don't receive the payout for this income until 2021. Does Adobe still report this as earned income on the 1099 for 2020, or does it only report what has been paid out to me in 2020?

I'm just wondering because, for audit purposes, I have been keeping track of all payments I have received from them, not platform-specific earnings. That won't do me much good if the 1099 reports the income based on when it is put into my account versus when I actually receive the payment since they wouldn't line up.

23
Yes, I create 3D animations that seamlessly loop, so I just loop them to be 30-60 minutes long and have been uploading them to YouTube for the past year. Once I got monetized, I was earning $2-$3 a day. I decided to throw mid-roll ads on them every 5 minutes, and now I'm earning $8-$12 a day. I'm getting about 3000 views a day. It's not a lot, but it's surprisingly consistent, and I only expect those numbers to grow over time. I can't say I feel the same about the stock websites.

24
I have over 250 animations/3D renders uploaded on Adobe Stock, Pond5, Shutterstock, Envato, iStock, Dreamstime, VJLoops.com, YouTube, Patreon and others. I'm earning between $500 and $1200 a month between all of those places combined. To rank which ones I earn the most from:

YouTube AdSense > Envato > Shutterstock > Adobe Stock > Patreon > VJLoops.com > iStock > Pond5 > Dreamstime

Sometimes YouTube, Envato, and Shutterstock trade places. Occasionally Adobe Stock beats Shutterstock. I've tried other sites as well (Dissolve, Canstockphoto, Pixta, 123RF, Depositphotos), but the earnings there are so bad I don't even consider them anymore. 123RF doesn't allow video uploads anymore anyway.

I've been doing this since summer 2019.
