At the end of the day if you sell your images on a subscription site whereby a buyer can DL an image at any size they want for a standard commision, then you're going to get screwed.

Correct! The "eat as much as you can" business model is only concerned with volume and basically an al-carte menu doesn't exist.  There's nothing particularly wrong with the concept except the food is crap, you'll probably get food poisoning and the management don't speak English!

In case you didn't see it, shutterstock wrote a nice message in response to all the comments they receive on their price increase.  Their message is here

http://submit.shutterstock.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=37831&start=465

and since it appears that their forum is public i thought i may just as well quote their message here

Quote
We'd like to make a few points in response to this thread before ending the discussion.

On the raise:

The goal of the new payout structure is to reward submitters who, according to the download stats, have contributed the images that our customers go on to license. Our customers appreciate the large total number of images in our library, but they vote every day on which of those images are most valuable to them. It's fair to say that this raise was structured as much by our customers' download histories as it was by Shutterstock management.

Prior to this raise, a new submitter could look forward to only a single 20% payout increase, whereas now they will enjoy a 32% initial increase, followed by the chance for two additional increases down the road. The new payout structure aims to continuously encourage all submitters to improve and enlarge their galleries. We want everyone to work their way up...

There are many ways to contribute to your lifetime earnings total. You can refer buyers or other submitters, you can sell Enhanced License downloads, and you can contribute footage to our growing footage library. The stock footage industry in particular has plenty of growth ahead, as mobile devices and digital advertising become more sophisticated and bandwidth becomes less expensive.

As has been pointed out, your own current earnings rate is not locked until next year. Our hope is that the larger initial raise and the two new subsequent raises will motivate every submitter to improve their quality and increase their gallery size throughout the year. You can earn more money by contributing more high quality content, and when you reach these thresholds, you will benefit from your content working harder for you. It's true that our library is massive and growing. But it's also true that quality content is quickly found and licensed by our growing list of customers. Our four search result sort orders -- Most Popular, Newest, Oldest, and Random -- are simple, have not changed in years, and are in combination very fair and effective. If your image is not being downloaded, it is because the image is not in demand right now, and not because the demand cannot find your image.

On the price increase:

While a few specific products in a few countries did go up quite a bit, we did not increase our overall prices by 50%, or even close to that. Our blended US and Euro price increases were about 26%, and our UK increase was about 36%. Above our core price of 249 USD or the equivalent, we charge higher amounts in some non-USD currencies to reflect the much higher costs of advertising in those markets. The UK is one example.

As some have pointed out, it's true that when a customer pays a higher price they will work harder to capture the value of their purchase. In our industry this means that, having paid a higher price for their subscription, they will go on to download more images.

We have a group of customers who lock in the lower rates with our rebilling program, so the price increase has no effect on the revenue we bring in from those customers. However, we still pay submitters the new higher payout rates when rebilled customers download.

The weak US dollar makes Shutterstock a low cost exporter to countries that have a stronger currency. While it's true that submitters in those strong currency countries are paid in USD, it's also true that a weak USD means our products are a tremendous value when compared to the locally available alternatives. The resulting increased demand for our products in those countries leads to increased downloads for all our submitters.

On the forums:

All submitters start off enjoying the benefits of forum participation, but this is a privilege, not a right. If you cannot act in a constructive and polite manner then we will remove your forum privileges.

Conclusion:

We look forward to seeing your new content and we appreciate your input. We're working very hard to continue the growth we have enjoyed over the last few years -- that is our primary objective. We hope you will all continue to let us represent your content as we move forward in this exciting industry.

Best Regards,

Shutterstock

That's a pretty balanced and well thought out reply. No response to that I'm afraid.

Shutterstock.com / Re: What SS Tier Are You In?
« on: May 14, 2008, 06:02 »
Correction. IStock simply cannot match the earnings from the top 6 combined... for you.

No it's not just me! It's basic mathematics!

If, say for argument sake, you've got 500 decent shots in your portfolio and submit those to the 6 top sites; if those shots are good enough to do well on istock they're good enough to do well elsewhere and that's where the figures don't add up.

Say I was getting on average $1.00 per sale for going exclusive on istock and all the others $.30 cents. Now multiply that .30c x 5 and you'll see where I'm coming from.

There is no compelling reason to go exclusive with IS and any knee-jerk reactions to the SS raise are going to be hasty ones IMO.

IStock simply cannot match the earnings from the top 6 combined so none of these arguments for exclusivity make any financial sense.

Off Topic / Re: Cloned cable connection?
« on: May 14, 2008, 04:36 »
Typically what happens is your router and IP becomes a mail server for spammers and that would explain your usage going off the scale.

But wouldn't that work only when my modem is on?

RMR, I don't need to log in.  I need the modem ID only to check the usage.  To use my cable connection, I only need to turn the modem on.  I know this is not usual, but it's how it works.  ASDL users however require an ISP, and this made cable cheaper that ASDL to us.

Regards,
Adelaide

If you've got broadband on the go using a wireless solution or something similar then you can be hacked. If it's a plugin connection ie; you're dialling up via your TV or cable connection it can also be hacked and it won't make any difference if your modem happens to be buried 20ft under the ground in a lead-lined coffin with everything disconnected. Some bad people have got access to your login details and that's all they need.

Sorry I don't have better news for you Madelaide but I understand how these issues can be extremely frustrating for the unwary.

Your solution is to get a techie who knows what they're at. I'd be able to look at your system from here but what you need is a little bit more complex than that.

33
I don't know if there will be saturation soon.  alamy is doing fine with 12 million images so why should the microstock sites have problems at these relatively low levels?  It seems that buyers always want new images.  There are swarms of new contributors but what percentage are highly motivated and have the skill to succeed?  Looking at my referrals on istock, there is still a balance between new contributors and buyers.

Agreed, but there are just too many other bit players coming into the arena and that also leads to over-saturation, thereby driving down pricing.

34

So an interesting announcement.  In fact almost exactly what one should have expected.

Interesting analysis but I'd be equally interested to hear your predictions over the short to medium term.

As I see it the market is in a steady state of decline with over-saturation looming on the horizon.

The SS subscription model relies too heavily on keeping content fresh and I can't see how they will continue to attract new customers at the level required to maintain earnings and still remain competitive.

It is one of the key reasons why uploads need to be maintained to keep this insatiable monster from imploding in on itself.

The istock model, in stark contrast, is ideal because they've maintained standards from the outset. SS, on the other hand, is still sitting on a mountain of detrius that needs to be flushed down the toilet but that's not going to happen either today or tomorrow.

With so many other competitors all selling virtually identical stock it can only lead to a price war which is why IS are pushing for exclusivity so heavily.

Let's face it, the arse is falling out of this business and if ever you needed evidence of that, look no further than the paltry raise provided by SS today.

For those of you who are relying upon this industry as your main source of income you need to diversify and you need to diversify quickly.

IP emulation is very simple to do and basically it sounds to me like you've been hijacked.

But would IP emulation count towards my cable usage? To know my usage, I have to provide the modem number, not an IP address. Is it possible to "read" the modem number through a trojan/spyware/whatever that might have been installed in my PC?

Regards,
Adelaide

It would yes. It's very easy to hack into your router (or modem) and that would also include access to your system depending on what type of firewall you have or what ports are open. I don't want to go into the technical details for obvious reasons but your modem ID is the least of your problems right now. Typically what happens is your router and IP becomes a mail server for spammers and that would explain your usage going off the scale.

I'd be ever so slightly past the $10,000 mark unfortunately.

Well I'm gonna say thanks to SS. That extra .8 cents has really made my day. NO THANKS! I mean thanks, no really thanks a bunch. And thanks to everyone who made this possible, and thank the lord I'm banned off that forum is all I can say. Yeah thanks a lot. Helix start another thank you thread. We need to thank people.

Adobe Stock / Re: sales on FT since search engine change?
« on: May 13, 2008, 08:49 »
Yes, my sales have fallen sharply too.

I notice that Yuri has complained on the FT forum that his sales have dropped by 50%.

It's going to be very interesting watching Yuri's portfolio ride the wave of discontent over the coming months.

I think his stuff peaked about 12 months ago and since then we've seen a steady decline by all accounts.

Observers may put it down to a downturn in the economy but I theorise it's little more than an attack of the clones when he made the dreaded mistake of publicising his earnings.

That, or the Russians are coming, I can't work out which is worse?

I don't use P2P programs, except Kazaa very rarely (last time was at least 2 months ago).

Regards,

Kazaa is a P2P program so get rid of that for starters and then get a registry cleaner as it installs other 3rd party applications alongside it.
IP emulation is very simple to do and basically it sounds to me like you've been hijacked. Here's another helpful program to see if that is the case.

General Stock Discussion / Re: How many more LuckyOlivers?
« on: May 12, 2008, 14:44 »

I do my part to upload good content to these sites.  They need to do their part to provide a viable marketplace for our images.  If they aren't doing their part then they don't get to make money off my hard work anymore.

If ever you needed a compelling reason to dump the losers it's contained in the above paragraph. Checking and uploading costs time and money and it's as simple as that. If the return doesn't match the input - allowing for a reasonable saturation period - well then bye bye!

Don't forget folks there's a credit squeeze in all major economies at the moment. Spending is down, advertising is down and it's generally just sluggish across the board.

mad...

I would say there is nothing to show as these images were added a couple of years ago just kind of a test. Two years being on micro is a lot...

Most sold Wooden cross, 44 times.

On artistrising I deleted some images and some new are waiting for approval.

Contakt@ agree with you according "fine-art photography is the one last bastion of refuge that I will not touch by lowering my pricing. " and in general according to lowering our prices... Just curious, what could be a masterpiece if someone can pay for it's print 1,500.00?... Or I miss something?

Without wanting to sound like a babylonian whore-master, we're talking about 50 limited edition prints at that price, just to clarify.

I had a quick glance at that site and it nearly brought me to tears. Oh Mary mudder of God the prices for fine art - and exceptionally good stuff it is too - is so off-the-wall that not even the Lord himself would be able to see me without the aid of a pair of binoculars, I'd be so far away from that site.

I have a lot of fine art stuff that I'd neither put there nor anywhere else like it. If you really want to hit rock bottom by all means do so but fine-art photography is the one last bastion of refuge that I will not touch by lowering my pricing.

Case in point I've just recommended to one client that he raise his prices up from 450.00 per print to 1,500.00 pp and he's getting it thankfully. The man is a pure genius but just didn't realise it and pitched his work pitifully low. The same could be said for microstockers but that's a different genre entirely.

Is it possible that someone may clone/hack a cable connection, using it even when the modem is turned off?

I was recently warned by my cable provider that I had used much more than my monthly transfer quota (20GB/month).  I never paid attention to that, as I am not a heavy Internet user.

Checking my daily transfer stats, I found that it ranged from 0 to 0.3 GB, rarely summing more than 2GB/month, then suddenly from April 24 these numbers rose immensely, reaching on some days 10GB in just one day!  And that even when I was out of town on a business travel!!

Nobody uses my computer and I turn the modem off with the computer.

Regards,
Adelaide

Obviously this has been happening while you were powered up. Do you have any P2P programs such as Limewire, Emule, or Lphant on your system and have you run a virus or trojan check on your system lately?

Pretty much consistently lousy. You've got to upload your shirt each week to try and keep downloads on an even keel. I've close to 3,000 images there and earnings always decline if I don't upload regularly.

I'm gonna be shot for saying this, but I like the site. I like the look and feel of it and I like a lot of the content; with one exception that is; do a search using "model" and some blonde comes up on page 2 and 3 with more bags than Terminal 5 Heathrow on a bank holiday weekend. Not good when I look at the amount of space she's taking up and virtually identical images all over the shop.

Obviously reaching critical mass is going to be your biggest challenge but I think if your reviewers don't get it right from get go it's going to be very hard to convince the pros to come on board.

Photoshelter is a prime example of what I'm talking about. Great GUI and very slick interface but shite content. They've basically shot themselves in the foot by rejecting perfectly adequate content and seem to be running the site on one individuals personal preferences and not what I would regard as commercially viable stock.

So that's my tuppence worth John, good luck with it, you look like you've burnt a few dollars and let's hope you make a fortune.

50
My downloads increase as I upload more.  There could be lots of reasons why this doesn't work for some people.  It is impossible to know why without seeing a portfolio.

Totally correct!
