And you and my older daughter also have something in common for 2012, since she & her husband are expecting a baby (boy) early May. First grandchild on both sides of the family.... a (furless) model who (literally) can't say no! Hope you'll have a chance to share baby pictures down the road, Morphart. re Morphart: "I just got my new baby girl on the 17th (yesterday), wasn't here for a few days, but tomorrow I should get the time to complete and send the cards."
Congratulations, Morphart! My baby girl turned 30 on January 17th!
@Ann Wow what a coincidence , same birth date for your <<baby>> as mine... Your baby is as old as I am... I turned 30 the 17th... of July .
@Madelaide Thank you for you good wishes and blessing !

My baby girl turned 30 on January 17th! ---------- My lot is stamped, addressed, and waiting for me to think of something to write next to address. 2 years of cards scattered over & under furniture when I swung my monitor into postcard display holder, so hope I'm not leaving any out: - racephoto - peaceful Falls, sad legend
- karimala - atmospheric, contrasty BW
- reckless - jazzy, 2-sided (barely survived reckless attack by postal machinery)
- Opla - image + glossy pearl paper made for each other

BaldricksTrousers - I certainly agree with your "It is silly to sound ridiculous," which is why I included "...ideally in a way that doesn't sound stilted." The above sentence reminds me of a somewhat related point. Though the comma/period goes inside closing quotes in America, it looks incorrect to so many that I sometimes "rearrange the furniture" to avoid it. (At least I never "feel badly.") smiles - Ann

This thread - in more ways than one - has reminded me why I should avoid assuming things about other people, including their motivations, life experience.... -------- FWIW Re: "The first paragraph ends with a preposition "something to be happy for". Should read "something for which to be happy." Really nitpicky but some judge merit on grammar."It's okay to end a sentence with a preposition. However, what's right (from a writing mechanics standpoint) and what's wise (for effective communication) can be two different things. So, if you suspect your audience will consider it an error if you end a sentence with a preposition, then, certainly, rephrase the sentence, ideally in a way that doesn't sound stilted. RacePhoto - When I was buying postcard stamps for your first postcard exchange here, the postal clerk mentioned that all (regular sized) International postcards were 98-cents, so I guess that was about a year ago.
(I thought you got that nifty-looking postage rate chart from someplace online, or I wouldn't have said anything about the 80/98.)

jsnover's comment about bacterial films - which reminds me of "the tipping point" - is well-worth keeping in mind. Jsnover: "If you've ever read about bacterial films (meaning a collection of bacteria on a surface, not a movie) nothing much special happens until they're there in sufficient quantity. It may be that there is no immediate effect of one or two photographers leaving iStock, especially if those anecdotes about how buyers work that we've heard here are true - that buyers choose a site and stick with it rather than shopping around for each purchase to find their chosen image at the cheapest price." The advantage, for me at least, is peace of mind. I can't in good conscience support a company that refuses to support its contributors.
+1 Well said.

LOL, so it costs more here in USA to mail International Postcards when the text is bigger? I thought all regular-size International postcards sent from USA = 98-cents postage.

So far I've found about 18 copies of the postcard I'd like to send out, so this should work! smiles - (Ann)

XPTO - IF the Newspaper Scheme is where those dozens of small sales are from, have you considered opting out of it? Especially since I have such a small port (400+ images, all of NY, mostly RM), I'm in neither Newspaper Scheme nor NU. I feel it's preferable to risk losing small sales rather than losing a big sale where client needs right image with "less complicated" sales history. [quote...] they already have subscriptions too, for instance their deal with UK newspapers like Daily Mail, Guardian, Telegraph, etc .. that means 5$/photo if you're lucky for web size (RM or not).
That's true. I've got about 50 sales under $10 (gross), being half of them about $3 (gross). In these latest I get $1.85 / $1.90 per sale.
And being the RM images included in the deal is just awful. Some of the RM licenses given to clients are so broad in spectrum and duration that they basically RF.
And I'm not even in the NU program.

My pleasure, Mellimage!
OPLA - thank you for hilarious card - people must look forward to them each year!
RacePhoto - 80 lb paper for Vistaprint postcards sounds right. They're much less expensive than Moo's postcards, which are 352gsm/130 lbs, so it's all about priorities.

RacePhoto - Glad you like the postcard - I used Vistaprint Postcards are not as thick as the "dollar each" kind, but company's reliable and very economical - amazingly so for large quantities. When people use this "tell a pal" link for 1st order, they get up to 80% off & I get referral credit: ann's Vistaprint referral: http://vistaprint.tellapal.com/a/clk/3qJddAnd, happily, one can often find 25% Off offers after the first order.

Reaktori - so soulful, peaceful. I tried putting little Christmas hat on my cat last night, and she was hatless and in another room in seconds - need to go back to Christmas collars, which they'll tolerate. lthn - Happy holidays! Mellimage - You captured that with a monopod! (Hmm, I should get mine out of car trunk, with all the lovely, though non-spinning, holiday lights.) Christmas market makes your head spin in my hometown: Spinning
Hope you all are having a wonderful holiday season!

I though it might be nice to have a spot to post link to a holiday image to share with fellow MSG'ers - could be one of your stock photos or not. http://tinyurl.com/ice-skating-Mohonk-2011Above is link to one of 2 ice skaters in New York's Catskill Mountains earlier this year. Older daughter is pushing younger one around. (not a stock photo, of course)

For my handful of sales, including first Distributor sale late October, funds have averaged around 45 days to clear, based on memory. (Started this year with under 100 files, now have around 400.) My zooms/sales don't seem to be much related.

Yeah he cracks me up. He's the same bloke that tried to pay one of his bills with a drawing of a spider. That one went viral a year or two back.
Missing Missy too. Thanks to OP for posting the original site.
OMG, I have tears in my eyes from laughing so hard over "Missing Missy" (and I Love cats). Thanks for mentioning that one, AttillaTheNun. http://www.27bslash6.com/missy.html

Hilarious. If future historians, or aliens, use our stock photos and TV shows for research, perhaps they'll find it heart-warming how often people sit squeezed around 1/2 of table.

[....] I think you have to be accepted as a news photographer to get into their news stream and then you can't send them commercial work. [....]. If you have News Route uploading priviledges, you can use that news Route only to upload current news photos. But you definitely can still submit other types of images, including commercial, using the regular "submit stock images" route.

alamy traffic doesnt look to good:
http://siteanalytics.compete.com/alamy.com/
does anybody know why?
Well, I certainly don't mean to dismiss the big disparity in traffic size, but keep in mind that Alamy is not a microstockgroup agency, where making Lots of rather small sales that involve little-to-no Customer Service is crucial. (BTW, the link leads to info based on U.S. Data Only, and Alamy's home base is in England, though it's continuing to open offices in other countries.)

I think you have to be accepted as a news photographer to get into their news stream and then you can't send them commercial work. Certainly, if you have any news images you are not allowed to be promoted in their special commercial section.
Here's a way to apply for Creative if you have both Editorial and Commercial images: Put your Commercial images in a pseudonym different from one(s) used for Editorial images. Open a 2nd account Ask Alamy to move images under your Commercial pseudonym to 2nd account Apply for Creative through that Commercial images account
