I would pay for a book written by one of the best microstock photographers. Since they prefer to sell photos than writing books to earn money, I will not...  ;)

Steve is one of the best.

So Mr. Duck needs to back that up, and buy Steve's book? LOL  ;D

Perhaps he has - anonymously!

Or maybe not!

How do you find your editorial sales on Adobestock vs. Shutterstock?

That is really hard to answer. I have many more at SS because they take all sorts of editorial, and also I have no way in Microstockr Pro to split out editorial shots. I did this analysis of Adobe by eye - looking at each image that sold and deciding if it was editorial or not.

No way I can do that for SS.

To a large extent, it doesn't matter - I put all files with all agencies that will take them and use Stock Submitter to do that. So the cost of putting a file on an agency is zero so I do it. Relative sales of different types of image then are "interesting" but not "important"

It has been really slow until the past 30 minutes or so - maybe something has been fixed!

Wow - that put me in my place! I guess any great microstock photographers don't come and post things on this forum either?

But seriously, aren't we being a bit hypocritical here? If you have been a long time contributor but have stopped uploading now that the industry is harder than it was, then I can accept that your advice that no-one should think of starting in stock photography now. However, if you are still submitting then you have decided that it is worth taking and submitting images and videos because the rewards are worth the effort. Not as good as it was, but still worth doing.

So why shouldn't a new photographer be able to do the same - take and submit images just as we presumably are still doing. All my book then does is help them with my view of the best way to do that in today's environment.

Yes, so did I - and I noticed that on the little map on the contributor page, each of those sales is shown as an unknown location for the buyer. New license type? I hope not!

I hesitate to mention this among the doom and gloom posts in other sections of the forum, but I've updated and published the 2020 edition of my best selling book (OK, my only book) on Getting Started in Stock Photography.

https://www.backyardsilver.com/2019/12/getting-started-in-stock-photography-2020-edition/

It is aimed at beginners but does get good reviews (on Amazon) from a wider range of readers. It doesn't paint a rosy picture either. But if you are interested in getting started in stock, this is a way to learn the basics quickly and easily.

I had some questions from the readers of my blog about what exactly an illustrative editorial image is. I've just tried to explain that in a new post and outlined how successful the first two months of my experience with this new usage type has been with Adobe Stock:

https://www.backyardsilver.com/2019/12/adobe-illustrative-editorial-stock-images/

Hope it is helpful for those interested in submitting such shots to Adobe.

Sean - you are right - it is no longer as clear as it was about how many dishes/shots are required. It is sort of implied in one of the FAQ, where it says if the restaurant is particularly expensive you might shoot 2 shots with agreement. But I'm going to confirm with the program manager when they confirm the restaurants they want me to shoot.

For all of mine I had to take three meals. Not all entrees - you could have a soup, salad and entree. I tended to buy one salad and two entrees because I always looked for something that was easy to plate and towards the end, I had my table top set up with the lights and the camera on a tripod over the table and would take the three shots in maybe 10 minutes. Then we would eat half the food and freeze the rest for a second meal later. That meant I spent more than my allotted allowance, but we got two good meals for two people out of it. I found that the prices are higher on the doordash app than direct from the restaurant, so I tended to visit the restaurant myself instead of having them delivered. That gave me a feel for whether we would ever go back and eat there! Some definitely not!! So you could just about get away with spending the $30 and no more, but it would be hard, to be honest!

It is not a great way to make money and I'm sure is contributing to the downgrade of earnings of proper food photographers (look at one of the comments to this blog post" https://www.backyardsilver.com/2019/10/nice-little-side-earner-with-snapwire/

But there is little creativity in what they want - they define how it is supposed to look and I set up my studio set to replicate that time after time. So I felt comfortable with the process.

I've only had one sale a long time ago - a couple of years or so and I can't even remember what it was for! What I use the site for are these location based requirements. There have been many from Doordash for the local restaurants that I wrote about, plus there are ones for tech real estate company - WeWork, but none of those in my area. The payments for purchasing food have been pretty instant - ie as soon as I was approved to take those restaurants, I got the money via Paypal for the food. I only claimed my money for the fees associated with the shoots themselves at the start of this month and I'm still waiting for that. So I can't really confirm that they pay as promised yet.

The Doordash ones ones are image buyouts, but they only take the 3 that they are looking for. If you have taken more shots from different angles, you can obviously sell those on stock if you want.

I just had one of mine (from Vienna) taken down on Alamy. The thing to remember is that any private place - a church, a palace, a castle, that you might tour, especially if you buy a ticket, can have its own rules about photography. Some ban photography altogether and have signs to that effect, others might have a sign somewhere that says no commercial photography. Their place, their rules! There is no "free speech" right to take a photo there and sell it, even under an editorial license. So they are well within their rights to request that it is taken down.

The question on whether you take the image down from other agencies is a matter of risk - you probably should, but you could balance that against the chance of discovery. The legal answer is - take the images down.

Photography Equipment / Re: The Best Unlimited Cloud Storage?
« on: December 16, 2019, 10:20 »
I keep separate folders for all the JPEGs that have been created for stock uploads on a different physical drive to my original Raw shots. I back up the Raw ones continually onto an external drive, but I've been uploading all the JPEGs to the free Amazon prime drive over the past weeks. I now have 25000 images for 159GB of storage that is all free (obviously I pay for Prime). It all happens in the background - whenever I add a new JPEG to my stock upload folders, it gets backed up to their cloud. I can see them and download them wherever I am, which also helps if someone actually buys an image from my personal stock website and something goes wrong with the delivery!

Good point now about Windows 10. I think I first loaded Avast well before I moved to Windows 10 and stuck with it. I agree that the Windows Defender program is fine on its own.

Software - General / Lightroom performance with Avast Anti-virus
« on: December 12, 2019, 10:51 »
For months I have struggled with slow performance from Adobe Lightroom - several seconds delay before the metadata would appear ready for copying between files and although I thought it was linked to the Avast free anti-virus app I have on my Windows 10 machine, nothing I could do in the settings seemed to help. I had discussions on their support forum but basically was told that it was doing what it was supposed to be doing...

Finally I gave up and uninstalled it - Lightroom is now like a happy puppy - eager to take on the next task with joy and anticipation! So if you have this combination and have these issues - this seems to be the only solution I have found. The fuller story is on my blog, but you already know the bottom line.

I know this is a really old post, but I was looking for the most recent earnings survey. Anyone remember what the most recent survey (that had results published) was?

I forgot to talk about which agencies did well for me in November in my previous blog post so I rectified that this morning. No surprises - Shutterstock was my best agency!

My understanding from reading the photographers guide to copyright is that selling a print of your own work is not considered to be "publishing" and so you can sell prints (at least in the USA) of anything you have taken. It is the act of "publishing" that bring the potential risks of infringing on trademarks or needing releases etc.

By the way, I've just published my own monthly report on video sales today. I always wait until the month finally ends to do my main report. The video one is here:

General - Stock Video / Re: Wildlife stock footage opportunity
« on: November 28, 2019, 12:14 »
It sounds like a great job to have - but, I do wonder if the earnings will ever be there...

I blog a lot about my earnings from both photos and videos and how many assets I have online on https://www.backyardsilver.com/. As you will see, the earnings from video are very variable. Sometimes it is $600, sometimes $150 or so. But my videos are of topics that are in demand (at least from time to time) and I take things that I believe will form part of a story on a website or perhaps a short clip in some news story on the TV perhaps.

I may be wrong (as I have almost no wildlife shots) but I am not sure what the demand is for clips from a stock agency. Perhaps there are agencies that focus on wildlife videos, but where do you see them being used? The main uses of videos like that are in nature documentaries I suspect, but there, the TV company will be producing their own clips as part of the documentary. Would they use stock clips?

So I don't have an answer for you, but hope these thoughts help you work out if there is an opportunity.

OK, thanks James. Perhaps your emails to contributors should make that clear? A friend of mine asked me the same question a few months back and there was no mention of liability.
