Software - General / ProStockMaster issues with Windows 7
« on: September 08, 2010, 19:53 »
I've used PSM for a long time on an XP machine but have upgraded myself to a new PC with Windows 7. I installed PSM and got it working with my database, and I had normal success in uploading images to the various sites. Then I either upgraded Java or perhaps PSM (lost in my memory now), but I have had problems with it closing with no warning and no error messages part way through the second image. Before I start tearing my computer to pieces to try to find the cause, is anyone else having issues with PSM and Windows 7?

Their support has been great, but no solution so far - hence the widened search for potential problems.

DepositPhotos / Keyword sorting on Deposit Photos
« on: August 22, 2010, 09:45 »
I just uploaded about 200 additional images to Deposit Photos. I stick with the site because it was (traditionally) pretty easy to upload to, but I see that they now want us to sort the keywords to show the three main keywords, then 4 secondary keywords and then the rest. For those of us who use Lightroom for keywording, this is a lot of work, as the keywords are exported in alphabetic order. It has made me really question why I am bothering uploading all these images and then spending time on each one to sort out the keyword order as well.

Any comments from the site owners on this change? Are we supposed to go back and edit the keywords on all previous uploads to align with this new approach?

General Stock Discussion / Photographers Guides
« on: July 14, 2010, 14:37 »
This is slightly off the topic of stock sites, but is perhaps an interesting way to monetize some of our images. I recently spent a week in Warsaw, and had many walks around the old town with my camera. Of course those images are now on-line at the main stock sites, but I thought it might be interesting to create a short Photographer's Guide to Warsaw with a street walking guide and images that you are likely to see. The plan is that I would sell it as an e-book for downloading and printing prior to a visit. Getting it high up on Google wasn't hard (not much competition!), but it made me think that perhaps other members of this group would be interested in creating such books and we collaboratively sell them.

I have created a web site (to be on www.e-photoguide.com once the internet changes take effect). It is presently under an old domain of mine http://www.backyardbengal.com. The actual Photography guide itself is linked from the main site to my blog, and there is an example file (the first 3 pages) available on the site as well.

There are two possible business models - one which works as the site does now - the link goes to the owner of the guide and they sell it, or a second more complex version would require the addition of a shopping cart, contracts etc. and I operate the site making payments to the authors in much the same way as a stock site does.

I'd be interested in any thoughts on the format of the guide itself to photographers like yourselves, and whether you think there is a market to create and sell these guides. This is obviously a market where we could do much more together as I can't do more than a handful of guides on my own.

I don't have an issue with 123, but the last 3 uploads to BigStock have failed to appear in their unfinished images section. They are shown as uploaded by PSM, but nothing on the site. BigStock won't confirm if the images are there and not being shown for some reason.

Anyone have issues with PSM and BigStock recently?

Thanks for all the helpful responses. I suppose I could argue that some of the images were taken from a helicopter and not in the park, but I guess the answer would be that all the air above the park is also their property!  I'll just put it down to experience!

I had a batch of images taken in Australia of Ayers Rock rejected by Shutterstock using the rejection:

"Trademark--Contains potential trademark or copyright infringement--not editorial"

This is a first for me - are natural landscape images subject to trademark or copyright? I guess this could be on private land and so controlled in that way?

Veer / Re: Veer Dash for Cash
« on: May 07, 2010, 11:28 »
I was going to refer this promotion to a friend of mine who currently doesn't upload to Veer. Does Veer have a referral program? I couldn't find anything on the site.

Newbie Discussion / Re: New microstocker :)
« on: April 23, 2010, 11:50 »
I'm not sure the lighting is wrong (although the sky is very boring) - it is the fact that you can't see the object that you are trying to photograph, and even if it was a bit closer, it is still almost the same shade as the tree. As for improving composition, read some photo books and magazines, look at the stock sites and what sells. I'm not sure it is easy to explain in a forum post!

Just for background, I wrote a blog about my own experiences in getting into stock photography 2 years ago (as have a lot of members here). In the early days, I did go through my frustrations and successes as I got more experience.

I'll have a go at commenting as I have myself confused getting a tricky shot with something that is saleable. When I first glanced at the image, I thought it was a funny shaped tree with nothing interesting at all. Then I saw the owl, but it's color and contrast almost makes it invisible. Finally, the branches on the right make it very cluttered. So, while it was good to capture the owl like that, I'm not sure anyone glancing at lots of images would see the owl, and then I'm not sure how anyone would use it.

This is how mine worked out:

Of about 800 images uploaded (580 of which are on Shutterstock, Dreamstime etc.), 250 have been accepted into Zoomar, and then of those, 209 have been accepted into Polylooks, with a credit so far of 31.35 Euros. I have maybe 20 more to process. The ones on-line are getting hits from buyers, some with 5 hits so far. No purchases though!!

As I mentioned in the earlier post, I haven't bothered to check which ones failed because they were less that 6M though. All in all, not much work for 31 Euros.

**Updated after further investigation about how to offer to Polylooks***

After playing with this on and off through the day, here is my summary of how to work with this site:

1. Sign up as a photographer, which, after the normal email confirmation, requires you to read and approve the photographer's agreement
2. Go to My Profile, and set your default pricing - I've set mine to Standard for now, although I think you can later go in and give your best pictures the Premium rating
3. Download the file uploading Java application. This is pretty intuitive, and in my case, I added each of the folders containing my stock photographs (I keep them by month on my hard drive), and then the application works in the background to upload each file. It seems relatively slow, but you can just leave it running
4. Go to the site under Manage Pictures, and the system will tell you if any keywording or titling is needed. As far as I can see, the problem images are at the head of the thumbnails and you can add keywords, then add description and save. I found that if you do it the other way round, the description is lost when you come back to that page.
5. The files can be checked as they are being uploaded - no need to wait until the uploading is finished. After a few are online, contact them via the web site contact page to ask for the upload limits to be raised to 1000.
6. I couldn't see how to make the default license set to Royalty Free, and so all of the uploads ended up as Rights Managed. I'm not sure that matters for Zoonar, but it does if you want to promotion for Polylooks. So I went through each page of files, marked them all, and then selected Royalty Free. As the newest files are on the first page, you can check this from time to time and just amend the latest ones
7. Then go back to Profile to Partner Management and choose which of the Partner sites to offer them to. This selection doesn't actually push the images to the partners! Unfortunately, you need to go back to the Manage Pictures, select each file and then choose "PolyLooks: Request Approval". I think I must have selected this too quickly, because I can now see that when you choose "PolyLooks: Request Approval", the system marks each thumbnail with a symbol that first states that the image is being reviewed, and then changes to either say "approved" or "rejected". One of the links on the right "go to account" shows the earnings from this promotion.
8. I think that is all that is needed to qualify for the promotion.
9. Just a comment about releases - the standard update puts the release status as "unknown". If you have property or people releases, you need to select the files and choose "Model Release is available". As far as I can see, you don't have to upload the releases themselves.
10. Finally, they do have a referral program that can be applied for on the site in the Webmaster menu on the left. You have to register a web site, but then you get the referral code. Mine is below!

One thing I noticed - I uploaded a lot more files than now appear "on-line". It could be because they didn't meet the standard (although they are on-line on many other sites), or they are less than 6 Meg files. Many of my older files are probably aimed more at the 4M Shutterstock limit, but I could find no indication of what happened to rejected files on the site - another Michael question! Although I have almost 600 files online with Shutterstock, so far I have only 180 online here, which is going to limit my earnings! I have a few more to go, but there is a disturbingly high rejection rate unless I have a lot of small files!

Final point - no work needed on the vast majority of files, so it is very easy to upload.

Hope this helps

Michael

So we can do this now - ie set up the link to Polylooks in advance of the midnight deadline? I have photos uploading as we speak and have had the upload limit raised to 1000.

I've started the upload process - it is really quite simple using their java uploader which allows you to select various folders on your hard drive and it steps through the files in turn. Assuming I understood the instructions, you can upload all the images today, but you don't select the option to offer them via the partner site until after midnight today.

I'm not too sure about pricing yet, although you can easily make bulk amendments to the images on the site after uploading.

There are no categories, which is great!

They also have a referral program. Maybe this is cheeky, but here is mine!

A question - I read the Photographers agreement on the site, and two things jumped out at me - the first is that images need to be 6 Megapixels (compared to 4 with Shutterstock) and also the keywording must contain 10 English words and 10 German words. Does the offer about German keywording being performed for free apply to all images uploaded, or just the ones uploaded in this promotion?

General Stock Discussion / Flickr and Schmap
« on: March 29, 2010, 11:39 »
A little while ago, I put small versions of my stock photos on Flickr to see if it would generate some interest in the photos and lead to more sales. I'm not sure if it has, but I have been approached by a company called Schmap to "donate" one of my pictures to the Schmap Washington DC Guide in return for a Photographer attribution.

Here is the link to the image they want to use: http://www.schmap.com/shortlist/p=46106336N03/c=SO2005701

Anyone aware of Schmap and their approach to using photographs?

Did anyone see an update to Prostockmaster that fixed this issue? I am still having the same problems with uploading to BigStockPhoto and 123

Adobe Stock / Re: Hahaha, 2 EL's for $3.92 each, lol
« on: February 25, 2010, 11:46 »
I just sold my first EL for 20 credits and got $6 something, but I noticed that current uploads are automatically defaulted to 50 credits for an EL. Did anyone find any way to change all the previous uploads from 20 to 50 besides going to each file in turn and modifying the field?

General Photography Discussion / Re: Hubpages

Hub pages look pretty interesting - I will check that out using the link provided.

The one I found last year was ehow.com - here is my profile and list of articles (of course there is a Stock Photography one!):
http://www.ehow.com/members/steveheap.html?view=3rd

As far as I know, they don't have a referral scheme.

The articles are really easy to write, you can put links to your other web sites (as long as they are relevant), and they pay based on some calculation of interest in the content. Not a great earner - $35 - but after the first flush of enthusiasm you can just leave it alone and it continues to pay.

New Sites - General / Re: Anyone heard of, or using Catooh?
« on: February 03, 2010, 12:51 »
I had a look at it yesterday and thought I would try to upload some images. The actual upload was OK, although extremely slow (about 2 hours for 20 photos), but I am stumped by the next stage of the process. It doesn't seem to import the metadata - no title, description, keywords (although it helpfully adds the filename as the Title!), and then there would be a laborious selection of categories through a folder system. I've given up without getting one photo through the process.

Horrible, indeed!

General Stock Discussion / Image Sizing before upload
« on: January 15, 2010, 12:31 »
Like many people here, I am uploading to about 10 sites, and have got into the habit of uploading the full size image to all the sites. I use the Canon 5d ii and so that can be a pretty big file if it hasn't been cropped. I do that for laziness reasons - I only have to maintain and keyword one copy of each file, and I think I am also assuming that a designer will buy the size they need on the site that they find the image on. On Shutterstock that means that someone may get a massive file for the 35c, but unless they would have searched for the same image on iStock and paid more for a larger copy, then I haven't actually lost any money. I may feel like I have given them a lot for 35c, but it is still a sale.

Any thoughts - is there evidence that buyers who see some small file on Shutterstock would seek out the same file on iStock if they needed a larger file size?

General Stock Discussion / Does Flikr help with Stock Sales?
« on: January 05, 2010, 13:08 »
I recently (3 days ago) uploaded small versions of all my stock photos onto a Flikr pro account. I put a small copyright watermark along the bottom of each, but that would be easily removed if someone really wanted to - however, all they could download is an 800 pixel wide image. I put some generic words in my profile to say that I was a keen photographer and that my images were on Shutterstock, iStock etc. - no direct links to any portfolios.

I saw a lot of initial views of the photos, but today, a real sleeper file (http://www.flickr.com/photos/backyardimage/4235218883/#) was viewed on Flikr and then purchased on Shutterstock.

Does the group have any views on whether this sort of activity is beneficial to sales or just allows unscrupulous buyers to pick up small images for free?

OK - I uploaded a full size, non-modified file direct from the original RAW. I converted to JPG to upload it, but used the maximum quality.

Anyone see the artifacts in this one?

Example: if I put a 1.4 extender on a f/5.6 400mm lens and have to tape the contacts to make it autofocus, the EXIF will show 400mm when it's really, 560mm. If it's a non-Canon extender, it may not be reading the data correctly.

What extender(s) are you using?

Sorry - I wasn't very clear - these are extension tubes rather than an extender. I was trying to focus down to about 12 inches or so by adding "air" between the lens and the body! No extra glass in the optic path.

The photos were full frame in the camera as Raw, and then cropped down to 3000 x 3000 (approx). No downsampling at all - just a simple crop to draw attention to the interesting piece of the picture.

I'm still struggling with what is an artifact though, as opposed to noise!

It makes me wonder if I have a problem with the camera!  The shots were taken at ISO500 hand held using a 70-200 f4 lens with extenders. They are raw from the camera. I'll load the same files with no cropping and no "development" at all tonight - this is helping a lot, thanks.
