« on: November 15, 2019, 15:38 »
Sorry, James. If a photographer has set an editorial setting (as is the case here) it is because there is something in the image that they feel is protected in some way - a building, a piece of artwork, a person in the background etc. How can the photographer choose to remove that limitation without opening themselves up to a potential lawsuit. The publisher of an image is the one in the best position to judge if there is a risk in the use case they have in mind - not the photographer. Not sure what an exclusive sale has to do with an editorial marker. The question that was asked was whether the photographer would allow commercial use for an editorial image? How can they answer that question in any way other than "no".

I always find it very strange for Alamy to do this. Any client (ie the publisher) can use an image in whatever way they wish and they are in the best position to judge if it is a risk using the image in the way they want. So there is no need for the photographer to be asked anything. All they are doing is passing the potential liability back to the photographer who is in no position to judge if the planned usage is appropriate or not. In my view, the answer should always be - the client can decide.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Adding an agency: Depositphotos?
« on: November 02, 2019, 09:05 »
In October I had 10 sales over $1 on DP and one of those was for $10.66. I'd be the last to argue that those are great results, but I just put forward as one of the facts into the debate.

General Stock Discussion / Re: October Earnings Report
« on: November 01, 2019, 15:09 »
My results are now online as well. I ended up with just over $3000 although perhaps Canva will change their minds on earnings as it appears their reports have a mind of their own.

This shows the historical trend. October was not as good as October 2018, but a welcome pick up from the summer doldrums.

More details, as always, on my blog: https://www.backyardsilver.com/2019/11/making-money-from-stock-photos-october-2019/

Thanks for that clarification! So only requesting earnings from the smaller agencies every few months makes sense to keep those transactions to a minimum. Some of the agencies pay out automatically at pretty low levels. I'll have to see if I can stop that from occuring.

Steve

I report the 1099Misc's plus I report what an agency has paid me if they don't give me a 1099. I haven't had a 1099K from Paypal, so I'll keep my fingers crossed that I don't!

Good job the earnings from stock are leveling off and falling otherwise this could be a bigger issue! ::)

Don't these links show your personal best sellers? I thought the OP was looking for the best sellers on the agency in the month?

The shopping around is one element of the decision, but a key one is the uniqueness of the clip. I think we all agree that iStock has the lowest RPD for video (not sure how that varies with usage and video size, but lets assume they are the lowest). Buyers presumably know that and so if they have an account with iStock, they would start their search there. They will be presented with multiple options for their search and they would normally choose one. Only if none of the options meet their specific needs would they search elsewhere on the next stock site.

So if your video is not on iStock and is not particularly unique then that buyers wouldn't find it and buy it.

Steve

RPD is rate per download (or earnings per download). I noticed you did ask for photos and videos. My photo earnings per download is $0.60 on 5300 downloads in 2019. Shutterstock, for comparison, is $0.80 for photos and $20.85 for video. I don't often upload my videos to iStock these days.

My RPD is 0.5 USD

For video? I thought the original question was about videos?

For me - $6.00 in 2019 so far on 60 sales. Sales range from $0.08 to $85.64

General Stock Discussion / Re: September earnings

I find that istock earnings depend a lot of a few higher priced sales bringing up the totals. So the difference between a good month and a poor one depends on how many of this sales you have. This is a 3 month total so it reasonably accurate against the normal trend.

Those are the numbers I see in the same months as Sean - it appears that some of us see this incorrect menu drop down for months. What a fine development team they must have over there!

Good question about the trend! I was thinking about two things - the fall off in the past 2 quarters from previous highs, and also the background fact that I had around 5000 images online at the start of this graph and now have 14000 so my earnings per online file (which I included in my blog post) is falling fast. I think that is partly to do with the sort of images I take (travel shots) where adding a 1000 images from a big trip is not unusual, but they don't sell very frequently. Concept shots are generally uploaded in smaller volumes and sell better while they are current and interesting (bitcoin shots were a prime example a couple of years ago). However, they lose their sparkle after a while, partly because the competition increases and partly because the main users have enough bitcoin shots (with RF licenses) to allow them to keep using ones from their "stock" and still appear to be "fresh" to their viewers.

Great analysis Robert. How confident are you in the results you see in the Sales page though - whenever I click to a new month (and September 2019 isn't there in the drop down) I see different figures and image sales for multiple different months in the details.

The interface seems to be really screwed up in terms of what it is showing and the figures don't match what I have been putting into my spreadsheets each month using the older interface.

Finally got round to working up and publishing my September results and the 3Q of 2019. Overall the month was pretty good with almost $3000 in sales, but the historical trend does not look great:

I've written about my own workflow for doing that in the past, and have a few articles about using stock submitter as well.

It would be nice if once, just once, they agreed to swallow the mistake between them (Canva and Getty) and keep the contributors whole...

Video Equipment / Sofware / Technique / Re: dynamic zoom solution
« on: September 19, 2019, 09:01 »
I have occasionally zoomed in and panned across a 4K video to make it more interesting and then exported as HD for upload to the agencies. Have sold those from time to time.

Hi Mat - How about - why can't we do a sort in Lightroom to put our keywords into priority order when that is what Adobe Stock requires?

Steve

I looked on the US site and there are some used Edelkrone products plus some from resellers. Nothing from Amazon themselves with Prime shipping (which is what I normally use.

Steve

Hi David

Do Edelkrone sell their stuff on Amazon? I've always bought directly from the company. They have a scheme where your purchases are counted against a future discount if you buy something else from them in the future and their shipping has been fast and professional.

Being a bit cheeky, I worked for some time to be able to set up an affiliate account for Edelkrone and I've written quite a bit about their DollyOne product. If you are happy to do so, please use my affiliate link...
