I don't use StockSubmitter for this because I want to keyword my images in Lightroom so I can later find them. I could keep a separate catalog of my stock images, but I like to have the originals keyworded.

The one I like at the moment is this: https://imstocker.com/en/keyworder

It does search multiple agencies and it is easy to select the images that are closest to yours. Then picking the keywords from the ordered list is very smooth. I think you end up with a good selection of keywords and then you can add your own specific ones to that before uploading.

My latest earnings report shows the earnings for the main stock agencies I submit to (including 500px). So that will give you an idea of the bigger sellers (as does the poll on the right). But I have 12000 images, so your earnings with 5 will not be huge!

What a coincidence. I organized a lighting workshop last Friday and he was the speaker. He mentioned this - he seemed genuinely honest that he has been subjected to a several year attack from another photographer (known as the Angry Photographer I think) and his response was that he would be happy for someone to file a charge against him if they think they have a case. All the internet innuendo and claims are so easy to make and so difficult to dispel.

New Sites - General / EyeEM Earnings

Anyone had their earnings from EyeEM for April? Nothing so far for me

Tricky question - as for contributors with mixed video and photo portfolios, the high value of the video will bump up the average even though the number of them might be small.

I use Microstockr Pro to track such things and I think I can get somewhat close to the answer. For the 12 sites that the App tracks, in February I got 2595 downloads for $2092 - 81c.

iStock brings that down a lot with its less than 10c downloads. Adobe Stock is about 90c, Shutterstock is about 72c. But it varies from month to month.

The real answer though isn't the income per download although that might make you feel good. Isnt the question how much your images would have earned if they weren't exclusive? Not sure your question is getting you there because you don't know how many times they would have sold on other agencies.

Yes, I was going to say that - I don't see any path to creating a living wage (in the USA) out of this activity. The headwinds are too strong. But as a supplemental income stream, it is fine.

Incidentally, I'm impressed with Society6 as a place for more artistic shots. I've only got 32 pictures there, and my store has been open for no more than 6 months perhaps, but I get $20-$30 a month from it. Again, not fantastic in the grand scheme of things, but getting arty shots onto someone's wall does feel better than seeing a shot of a bitcoin on a webpage somewhere. I wrote about my latest sale on my blog today.

I'm confused... did you earn $9,650 or $3663?

Your post says $9650, yet - you only list $3663???

My attempt at an April Fools report was perhaps too subtle. It was, of course, $3663. I thought the rest of the post made that clear. Sorry.

Steve

235
Phew - what a month! $9650 earned from my activities.

OK - it is the first of April, but it was a very good month - best ever, with $3663 earned. Full details, as usual, are here: https://www.backyardsilver.com/2019/04/april-1-report-on-earnings-from-stock-photos/

This is getting much better. I like the alternative ways to browse the images, the selection is keywords is easy. In fact this is now my "go to" keywording tool.

The steps you describe in the Edit releases to create a new release sound correct. Presumably you uploaded your release file as part of that step. At that stage, the newly created release should be shown in the Saved Releases section of that dialog. Then I close that dialog and highlight the thumbnails of the files that need the release. I type in the first few characters of the release name in the field under the categories and your release should appear as a choice. Click on that to select it and click save. You can also add releases when your file is selected in the Edit Releases dialog box itself.

Not sure where your steps differ to this? I'm on Windows if that makes a difference.

First you have to add the release (as a Jpeg) to Stock Submitter. You do that in the manage releases section over on the right. Once the release is in the system, you click to select the file (s) you want to add a release to, type part of its name in the release field and select the appropriate release, then click save, and that is it. You should see a small badge over the thumbnail saying MR or PR. When that file is uploaded to an agency, the release goes to the agency with the file.

I'm not sure you can reference releases that are already with the agency that StS knows nothing about. I believe you need to add it to StS first, but the app is intelligent enough to refer to that release once it is aware of it. I don't think it submits a new one every time.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Wemark hows it going

I sold two earlier this month - not sure if I have earned Wemarks or real money to be honest... I'm going to be rich!!

I just export with the file name that the image has in my system - nothing special. I don't change that because I think Stock Submitter uses it own file names for uploading and submission, and also the stock agencies change the file name to something else as well. As far as I know, the file names we use don't make it through to the final agency file.

This is a windows screen. If you right click on any file in your file explorer and click "properties", you will see something like this. With JPEG files, the details tab of this shows what information is being stored in the file itself  - the keywords etc.

As an experiment, can you put some keywords, descriptions and the like into a JPEG and then modify the keywords in StS? When I look at one of my files that has been changed there (I alter the order of keywords when I get them into StS), and right click the file to look at properties and then details, I see all the information still in the JPEG itself. You can see the title and description are there  with the tags. I assume that the long set of characters in the comments field are what the StS system writes into the file to identify what has happened to that file in the application - ie has it been uploaded, submitted etc. Certainly I didn't put all those comment characters in there. I assume that each time you do something in the App, that information gets updated and that is why you are asked if you want to save changes.

This never happens on my system. Yes, you do get the notice that the images have changed and do you want to save the changes, but that is because the status of the images has changed - ie they are now uploaded, submitted etc. I've never had the keywords removed or changed without me doing that directly.

I wrote in some detail about how I handle my images (and videos) on my blog. I don't think much has changed since I wrote it:

I'm a bit late this month, but here is my February report on earnings. Bottom line - similar to previous February's, although with a much greater volume of files for sale, that isn't a great message!

https://www.backyardsilver.com/2019/03/making-money-from-stock-photos-feb-2019/

I did pass a major threshold over the weekend though - 100,000 downloads from Shutterstock. Just took me 11 years to do it!!

I added several videos to Adobe this past week using Stock Submitter (and Microstock Plus) and all of them have been submitted to and accepted by Adobe. Not sure if the extra involvement of Microstock Plus made a difference, but I haven't had issues.

123RF / US Tax form 1099 from 123RF
« on: February 14, 2019, 09:48 »
I asked 123RF when we will get our 1099 forms from their agency for the 2018 tax year. Helpful as always, they said:

The 2018 tax statement will be made available via the Tax Center page at a later date in March.
Link: https://www.123rf.com/tax/index.php

Kindly check the page in the coming month for updates on your tax statement.

Hope this clarifies, have a nice day!

Best regards,
Your Submissions & Review Team

Great news for those that like to file their taxes early...

Hi Jacob

I went to your newsletter and then to your own site. Very smart and modern looking. But I scrolled to the bottom of the page and was looking at the footer when the screen froze. My other Chrome tabs were fine. It started working again and I looked at a specific image and it froze again - I was trying to press "Extended" but nothing worked. After a while, it starts again. Don't know if this is a server issue, but worth looking at.

On the more general point, I still have my Symbiostock (Version 2) site and it works fine. I recently moved it to a new hosting company to give myself some more storage for new images, but sales are rubbish - one or two a year. I only keep it because I put so much effort into it (and I know that make zero business sense but I'm attached to it!)

General Stock Discussion / Re: How was January?

Cold and snowy? Tractor broke down twice.
And February has started even colder and more snowy!

My January was a bit better than December and more in line with previous years. In fact, it matched my January 2017 earnings, which sounds good until I remember that I added 2500 files during the year! Talk about lots of effort for no immediate reward!

Here is my complex graph of earnings in each month for the past 5 years. Overall, I'm still showing growth and I had some good video sales in January which definitely helped the monthly results, but it is still a hard old business!

Full discussion on the results are here: https://www.backyardsilver.com/2019/02/making-money-from-photography-january-2019/

By the way, I only mention the earnings posts on this forum normally. You can subscribe to my blog with your email address to get notifications of new posts - I do nothing at all with those email addresses!

I've been playing with it and while I may not understand everything about your color codes, I'm finding it helpful to get me started on my keywords. What I found would be helpful is that when you click the arrow to show more images, at the moment you just show one more. It would be better if you showed a new row of images to choose from - ie replace the current set by a new set.

I plan to do a blog post at some point comparing these different keywording systems - it would be interesting to see how they all compare.
