Alamy.com / Alamy - More DLs less money
« on: April 18, 2013, 12:37 »
Alamy DLs are three times more this year than a couple of years ago, but the earnings are more than three times less. I have not been uploading to Alamy on a consistent basis and only slightly increased my port over the past two years.

It makes sense that Alamy has to stay competitive. I am glad it sells more. The problem is, three times more DLs does not compensate for more than three times loss of revenue. It simply does not sell enough images.

How do you feel?

Nobody has been talking much about Zazzle lately. I opened a store a few years ago and forgot about it. I am surprised that I have actually reached a payout with my pitiful small amount of products. Maybe I should give it more credits and have another try.

What should be considered a fair or reasonable percentage for a seller?

Payoneer / Be Aware of Payoneer Arbitrary Fees
« on: November 07, 2012, 13:07 »
I tried to withdraw $500 from a bank machine outside the US, and it only allowed me to withdraw $400. I didn't understand because my daily limit was higher than that. Perplexed, I tried to withdraw $500 a few days later, again it only allowed me to take $400. This time, I asked a bank employee, she said it was a limit set by ATM, not because I was over my daily limit. All I needed to do was to withdraw again, as another transaction. Of course, more transactions means multiple ATM charges.

Today, I looked at my Payoneer transactions online. Wow, each time when I tried to withdraw $500, they charge $0.90 for "Fee-ATM Withdrawal International Decline", even though the amount is totally within my daily limit and there was plenty money in the card. I must have tried three times, because it was listed three times. Not the amount was huge, but it is a rip off, I must say.

Did it happen to anyone else? I didn't know any other credit/debit cards do this.

Have you reached your 2011 RC level before September 2012?
- For example, if you are currently at 30%, have you earned enough RC to stay at 30% for next year if the target stays the same?

Do you expect to reach a higher RC level under 2011's target by the end of 2012?
- For example, if you are currently at 30%, do you think you are likely to reach 35% by the end of the year?

Did anyone buy any IS stocks when it was trading? When IS ceased trading, what happened to the stocks? Did you make any money when selling them back to the company?

iStockPhoto.com / iStockChart no longer public?
« on: February 29, 2012, 15:41 »
iStockchart asked me for user ID and password when I tried to take a look.

Is it no longer for public view? What happened?

iStockPhoto.com / Does inspector change our file size?
« on: August 18, 2011, 00:14 »
Does inspector make our file size smaller to allow the image to pass inspection?

In other words, if the original file size was XXL, will an inspector make it XL or smaller so the image can pass inspection? Just curious.

iStockPhoto.com / When they tun off the tap?
« on: August 02, 2011, 17:42 »
Is it a myth or reality when someone claims that iStock turns the DL taps off? Bad best match for a few? Or site wide? I also experienced 500 error when uploading today. When it happens, my sales seems to be affected.

I have seen many people saying "as if the tap was turned off". Personally I have experienced it, such as today. It should be a normal weekday, but hardly any sales.

What makes it happen?

I would like to find some sites to sell photo prints. I tried RedBubble before and never sold anything.

Which sites make good sales? Any sites accept RGB images? I hope I don't have to convert the images into 4 colors. Thanks.

iStockPhoto.com / Clue?
« on: December 30, 2010, 13:40 »
I have a gut feeling that something is cooking at Getty level. iStock management cannot respond because things are beyond their control.

iStockPhoto.com / Does Istock still pay referral fee?
« on: November 20, 2010, 14:51 »
I referred someone to Istock recently, who was accepted as a contributor a few days ago.

But I haven't heard anything from Istock, nor have I got the $25 fee.

Is the referral program still working?

iStockPhoto.com / Is it in a book or what?
« on: October 22, 2010, 11:37 »
I have always wondered about this.

It is nice to see that someone gives you a 5-camera rating on your work. However, many ratings come from relatively new contributors who have very few images of their own but have huge amount of ratings for their images. I imagine that they must be very active in giving out ratings to other people's work, while human nature makes others want to reciprocate by giving them high ratings back.

Is this trick in some stock photo books or blogs? Otherwise, how do these new member know this? Does it help sales?

What will you do? Do you reciprocate their ratings?

iStockPhoto.com / Vote on Kelly Thompson's Sep 10 explanation
« on: September 10, 2010, 17:58 »
Kelly has just offered another soul searching explanation, but changed nothing. Please voice your opinion.

I saw the petition on IS forum but thought it was too simple an emotional response. So I didn't vote.

I understand IS intention to reward new talents faster. However, the major flaws in KT's announcement are, as I see it:

- goals too high
- few consideration for long-term contributors
- few hope for advancement for the majority

I propose to revise it as:

- setting up rewards for the talented and productive, and,
- setting up rewards for the long-term members (meaning that your seniority will mean something), if you get a minimum numbers (for instance 100) of images accepted every year.

Do you have any other and better suggestions?

iStockPhoto.com / How does IS Structure Change affect your DLs?
« on: September 08, 2010, 17:52 »
Maybe it's interesting to see if and if yes, how KT's structure change announcement affects the buying behavior of the buyers.

Please compare the week before the announcement and after. In theory, we should see a buying surge after the Labor Day weekend.

If you shoot RAW, how many photos can you process from RAW to stock quality, if you work alone?

Please note that this question does not ask how many photos you can process and upload since we all contribute to different number of agencies.

If you have any assistant(s) to help with the process, you are not working alone, even though the assistants maybe your spouse or kids.

General Stock Discussion / Royalty-free - a misleading term
« on: July 18, 2010, 13:55 »
Many people have mistaken royalty-free means Take-It-For-Free. It's really frustrating.

Do you think that the agencies should come up with a better term?

I have been toying with the idea about going exclusive with IS. I have deleted all my images from all sites, including the last image from FT yesterday.

How long should I wait before applying for exclusivity? In other words, how long will it take to get rid of the images from FT and its affiliates? By the way, I have written to FT, Picmax and ImageTrail.

Thanks for any suggestions.

How many images did you have if you have achieved at least 1 download everyday for at least three months?

My sales went downhill since April with over 600 images.

Alamy.com / What should I charge for this private license?
« on: February 25, 2010, 11:30 »
An education publisher contacted me to seek permission to use a photo which has been deleted from my Alamy Collection by myself.

The same photo was previously licensed by Alamy once.

The photo will be used inside three times, once at 1/8 page, once at
1/16 page and once spot size.

iStockPhoto.com / Non-Exclusive Sales?
« on: January 16, 2010, 17:37 »
Since the second week of January, my sales really plummeted at IS. Last week was the worst.

Just wonder if it is due to the price change, or best match change.

Veer / What happens to Veer MP?
« on: November 30, 2009, 19:34 »
Veer Market Place has been very quiet lately. I have had no sales and few views for a while. My new submissions have been pending for 10 days. Does anyone have an explanation?

StockXpert.com / Is it a signal?
« on: August 14, 2009, 12:48 »
Just had a whole batch rejection from StockXpert after the photos were pending for around 2 weeks. The batch includes photos accepted by all other big 5. Given that StockXpert was traditionally more easy-going than other agencies, does this signal something?

Attila or doom's day?

Veer / My new uploads disappeared from Veer MP
« on: July 27, 2009, 20:57 »
Some of my newly uploaded photos have disappeared. They are not in the approved nor rejected folders. I don't want to upload the duplicates. Does it happen to anyone else?

Alamy.com / Alamy recommends Photoshelter as a hosting site
« on: July 02, 2009, 16:35 »
Alamy has recently sent out a message, recommending the hosting service of Photoshelter. Looks like a good deal, for it only charges $40 per year for the first year if we sign up before July 15.

I am debating whether or not I should take the offer. Can anyone share the experience? Thanks.
