I own the Sony A350 and love it!  I think Sony has some advantages over Canon and Nikon; particularly with full compatibility to the legacy Minolta AF mount lenses of which there are many good quality ones to choose from and are well priced on places like Ebay.  Also be sure to check out
 www.dyxum.com
which is main Minolta/ Sony user forum and has many excellent reviews on Minolta AF mount and Sony  lenses.  The A900 also has an APS-C lens setting where non full-frame lenses can be used with the A900.
If you still want to get into Sony but don't want to plunk down the coin for an A900, I'd recommend the 14.2MP A350 instead.

I don't agree with the freebie thing on CC either and I won't offer any of my images for free.  I too think that SS and others of it's ilk that are offering 2 bits per download are indeed "two-bit" operations.  I used to have a port on SS but have since deleted everything there in favour of supporting sites more in line with what CC is doing.
I have about 400 images submitted so far with about 20 rejects, but at the same time I'm careful with quality control so I expect a low rejection percentage.
I was around the same percentage of acceptance at Photoshelter as well.  I still got another 250 or so images left to submit to CC, so I'm doing my part to keep John busy!

I'm working on submitting 500 or so images onto Cutcaster.  Investing time and effort into a new company can be risky as I found out with Photoshelter, but I really want to support places that rise above the basic microstock rates like the big 6.  I also like the fact that John seems to be a pretty open and up front kind of guy who replies to your emails and comments pretty quickly, so I'm certainly up for helping cutcaster succeed.

I'm uploading to Cutcaster now as well.  I've set the algorithm to start at a 30.00 minimum.  I'm really trying to get away from microstock-type payouts for my images.  I uploaded 400 images via their FTP,so I've got my work cut out for me over the next week or two to get them submitted.  So far I'm quite liking their uploading features except that the thumbnail generator isn't happening for most of my uploaded photos.

I'm gonna try out cutcaster as well.  I had high hopes with Photoshelter, but that all went south.  I really don't want to go back to Microstock; especially Shutterstock with their two bit (literally) commission.  Ive got several
hundred good images, so as I have the time Ill see how things go over there.

I have about 20 or so 50.00 images on there as well, but no sales yet.  Congrats on your 50.00 image being sold, but I think those are the exceptions.

It would also depend on where it's submitted.  Shutterstock for example would be a couple weeks or a couple months if the image is quite good.  Istock seems to be longer, like 6 months.
My best image with microstock so far has earned me about 90 bucks with Istock.  That same image earned me about 10 bucks with Shutterstock.   Of course submitting images to better stock sites like Photoshelter can earn you potentially alot more money especially if you license it as Rights Managed.

Having recently switched over to Sony DSLR's, I'd definitely consider the A900 as a future purchase should it prove itself to be a good performer and the price is reasonable.
There's certainly alot of great 35mm full frame Minolta lenses still around that should work with the A900.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Buying your very first DSLR?
« on: May 21, 2008, 23:35 »
"My definition of serious: Willing to spend $900 or more for your first DSLR, means your serious."

Alright then.  Consider this scenario which I recently faced.  I consider myself an experienced Landscape photographer with 2.5 years experience with DSLR's; sorry, "entry-level" DSLR's (Olympus E-500 and E-510.)
Before that it was over 20 years of good old film SLR.  Anyway I sold my Olympus gear and combined with microstock money earnings I had $2000.00 to invest in a new body/ lens system.
What to do; buy a D300 and an 18-70 kit lens or spend less on the body and more on lenses?
In the end I got an "entry level" Sony A350, 3 half decent lenses (with some serious bargain hunting) and a couple high quality filters.  DSLR bodies come and go every couple of years but lenses can last a lifetime, so if one is indeed serious about photography where should the money really go?
Lenses!

I signed up and threw on some of my more traditional best-sellers from other sites.  It'll be interesting to see where it goes.

My best seller at SS; still not quite sure why:

This one does fairly well on both SS and IS:

I'd second CanStockPhoto.  I tried them for awhile and got 2 dl's.  Looking at their upload stats, even the most popular photos don't have much in the way of dl's compared to other sites.
I also wonder about shutterfarm and their business model.  They don't seem to be going anywhere either.

I have the S9100.  It's not so much the noise that's the issue but the horrendous amount of JPEG artifacts even at ISO 80 and shooting in RAW.  By the time you get rid of the artifacts, the image has been reduced to an unacceptable quality.
