I have been exclusive with iStock since 2006. I still like iStock and hope they can make it. To me iStock did not understand the market and that a lot of small buyers were artist as well. When KT started yanking us around things started to go south. SS jumped at the chance and now you have the current situation.

This made me laugh

Hey iStock (whoever might listen),

I really shouldn't care, but you are paying the marketing out of the 70% you keep from the revenue of my images.

Today I stumbled upon a new ad on a German website:
istock_ad

I am really confused now. It says in bad or at least ambiguous German that "1/2 of the files do cost 1/2 times more (!) forever" which I understand as "we have raised the prices for 50% of our images by 50%" (at least that is my understanding as a native German speaker).

I don't think that this is intended

Nice of you to check in Yuri and I applaud your success. I am frustrated with iStock's current silence but understand your move. Now my question is what are you willing to do for the photo community at iStock?

I am confused on this restructure. First according to Lobo it is not finished, but when they say we will get an update it doesn't happen. Next we had another GM change and the new GM might not like some of the changes that were in the pipe so now who knows. I am amazed at the so called "professionals" that run this company. They said communication was important and bam now hardly any from them except Lobo. I would be thrilled if they pulled an ace out and people come running back but I just can't see it at the moment.

Exclusive = Confused

732
You can slap me now or later but I am feeling bullish on iStock! I think SS is in more of a bind long term with shareholders then iStock is at the moment.

Disgusting!

I like the scoopshot concept and think it has a market, I have always wished iStock had a submission app like this for iStock! Combined with easy release bam you have it all there on a good sunny day

Hello Yuri,

I am exclusive with iStock and have been a lot longer then you have. That being the case I have only seen Getty reduce our share espically with the RC system. I would love your ideas on how to get rid of the RC system, I would be thrilled to get behind you on this as would the whole community. Please advise us as the ball is in your court.

Sean state's the truth in that what iStock said is an out right lie. If they said you can only find his content on iStock and our partner sites that wold be true. You see Getty bought peopleimages, now the crazy thing here is Yuri keeps 100% commission at peopleimages?? Whhhaaat! So I need to start a site, sell it to Getty and I still keep 100% of sales for me :-), Now that is a good deal!! Fact is people Stocksy is still the most honest and fair place for photographers to sell at!! I am exclusive and not on Stocksy but it is what is needed here. Still can't figure out why Stocksy dose not get more hype here. Yuri is for Yuri and that is fine, he won't do anything for me and if he thinks he is so special to Getty he will have a hard lesson to learn. That goes for anyone and any job, there is no one person that is so special, trust me if you quit today the industry will still be fine without you that is just life.

737
Hello Yuri,

Love your success and have followed you and Sean for years. I still chug along and am stay exclusive with iStock. On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the highest. How much better do you think iStock is compared to shutterstock?

738
The only one really communicating is Lobo.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: New Pricing
« on: July 16, 2013, 08:30 »
Well, I am smart enough to not post that. It dose irk me to see the double standard for being exclusive. Now from a business point I think iStock is making the right moves in the market. Pricing was to high for a lot of buyers so the cut is good for buyers and long term health of the company. Next iStock has different level pricing which other sites have as well, example "OffSet" which is another completely different site from the SS main site. I am still feeling bullish on the iStock changes.

Would it be safe to ask in the iStock forum if exclusive artists can sell from their own site now? Yuri peopleimages as an example, along with the press release how could they say no?

Been doing this full time for 3.5 years now. Quit not a chance, can't think of another job I would like more! I love the changes at iStock and am glad I stayed exclusive. If you love something it never feels like work.

I'm thrilled with this! One way to survive in this market is to set yourself apart from the others. Hated PP from the start as it was a down sale not an up sale!

743
Rockin my ... I was actually hopeful cause this happend all day long. So basically they gave me a double payment of Getty earnings and are now going to subtract it. $690.83 in my case.

Good post Sean and that is how business works. The fact is that buyers are paying less for the main collection no matter how you slice the pie. Using credits for brand loyalty just makes sense. Most of my sales are from credits very few in % are from cash. iStock knows what that percentage is. SS makes you buy a credit package as well and can play the same game. These prices are still a lot more manageable then they were. All in all still a good move by iStock and the exclusive at this point. If you are non-exclusive that is another story!

The market is a little different online so we will see if these changes are enough to bring iStock back to what it was in the neat future. Funny everyone wants their images moved up in the higher priced collections but everyone complains about how iStock is to expensive. RC's are another matter.

I still see this as a bullish move for iStock. To have different priced collections has been proven to work now. To have mostly exclusive content in the upper collections makes sense. To have great pricing in the main collection I hope will bring buyers back. I will be back. I hate RC's as well, time will tell if these bold moves will work or not, I hope it is not to late for iStock. I am staying positive on this one

Buyer habits dictate most buyers won't use the lowest price point, now at the lowest price point iStock now is priced to include the small spender, the one man band like myself. For the past two years I have bought from SS and Pond5, now that IS prices are lower I will be shopping there for my images. Exclusive will dominate the upper price points so the up sale will benefit all exclusives. Since the market is saturated it is good to have less competition in the upper price points. Don't get me wrong as I feel non-exclusives should never be lower than 20% and iStock has not treated you fair at all, I am sorry for this massive pay cut for you as well! For the customer it is a good thing and only time will tell if it is good for exclusives or not. All of you are so talented, please keep in mind I have 40 pages of video in the "$" collection and I know the same will happen to video as photo.

One more thing, the problem is supply and demand, iStock has enough suppliers to do what they want hence they are in the drivers seat, so is SS and others. The best thing they can do is to protect their exclusive base!

You can shoot me for this but I think this is a good move! They are looking out for their exclusives first and giving the customer what they need! I hope buyers come running back to iStock, heck it stills pays more then SS most of the time! This is a customer centric change so lets see what happens! You can always become exclusive if buyers come running back!
