Hm, the survey is a nice idea, but somehow useless, because I cannot compare agencies that I do not deliver to. So probably one of the agencies where most people upload to will be on top of the list.

General - Stock Video / Bestselling videos at Pond5 in 2011
« on: March 26, 2012, 15:25 »
Hello,

I have asked Tom Bennett, the CEO of Pond5 to tell me what videos sold most in 2011 at Pond5.

Here ist the list, plus my own bestseller there:
http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.alltageinesfotoproduzenten.de%2F2012%2F03%2F26%2Fdie-top-10-der-meistverkauften-videos-bei-pond5-in-2011%2F (automated Google translation)

Or if you understand German, read my original post here:

For example most image buyers won't download on sundays or if they are in holidays, have to work on location and so on...

Since about a week I am missing the "Status of your submitted images" emails from Shutterstock, though image batched have been processed as I can see on their website.

Anybody else is missing these emails?

I already asked Shutterstock via contact form and Twitter, no reply yet.

Thanks in advance,
Robert

I have wrote a blog article about the new sensitive use licences from Shutterstock and my take on it. Sorry for the poorly automated Google translation to English, the original text would be in German. Here the translated to English version:

The nature of the image dictates its possible uses. If you picture a kid crying, or sad, or in a wheelchair, or with a black eye, you know what you can expect. A kid laughing has almost zero possibilities of being used in questionable ways. I'm sure AIDS orphans laugh now and then, but not in ads.

I dare to disagree, because I HAD some examples in the past. For example some happy young women (some even underage) used to promote a Dildo party website (had the image removed really quick) and another images of some young ladies holding thumbs up promoting right-wing political presidential candidate McCain. Shutterstock had the image removed quite fast too. I wrote about the second story here in my blog (poorly automated Google translation from German to English): http://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.alltageinesfotoproduzenten.de%2F2011%2F12%2F12%2Fwie-ein-stockfoto-fast-die-us-praesidentschaftswahl-in-den-usa-beeinflusste%2F

General Stock Discussion / Re: Model/Property Release Workflow?
« on: December 30, 2011, 18:56 »
H Bob,

I have worked with about 200 models now, so maybe I can help a bit:

Quote
  • What format(s) do you prefer to keep releases in, and what format do you upload them as?

I use JPG, though some others use PDF as well. That's usually it.

Quote
  • Do all agencies accept all generic releases, or do some agencies have specific requirements? Which ones? and how do you manage those differences?

I only use one generic release form for ALL agencies and most pros do the same.

Quote
  • What data/fields do agencies need to know about each models/property?

Some want to know: Age (or age range), sex (male/female), ethnicity, Location

Quote
  • Do you produce seperate releases for each shoot? (I vaguely remember iStock introduced a requirement for something to do with this in '09)

Yes, though I try to only upload one release for ALL shots, because it gives better results for the "more of the same model" searches.

Quote
  • Do you track image-volume/acceptance-rates/rpi/other on shoots/models/locations? If not, would that be helpful to you?

On a basic level, I do and it has been proven very helpful for casting new models.

Quote
  • Do you find much results from 'More Images from this Model' in some agencies?

Yes.

Quote
  • A couple of agencies have added MR-via-FTP... anyone using this yet? (If so, do you prefer a 1MR-Entire batch import, or would some kind of filenaming (like with .eps) be more suitable?)

Only sometimes.

Anything else:
A batch support to add several releases to a group of images at once would be really time-saving, especially for group shots.

If you need anything more, let me know, you know how to reach me...

Best regards,
Robert

123RF / 123rf video prices and commissions
« on: December 17, 2011, 10:03 »
Hello,

for a while now has 123rf announced that they start to sell videos now.

BUT: I was not able to find the PRICES they want to sell the videos for and the commissions they want to pay the videographers.

I sent them a mail weeks ago, but did not get a response.

Does anybody know more?

I do not want to upload my videos only to find out that they will severely undercut the prices of my other video agencies.

Thanks in advance,
Robert

Envato / Re: PhotoDune Non-ex Rate Increase from 25% to 33%
« on: November 22, 2011, 08:27 »
Definitely a step in the right direction.  It's great to see an agency being actively involved here and listening to contributors.  I'm still not ready to make the jump until the prices are raised.

Same here. Sounds interesting, but XXL prices are still too low for me...

I answered the questions regarding the "print on demand" sales on sites like Pixers in my blog (originally in German, so here the automatic Google translation):

What comes closest to your wishes might bei picworkflow.com, though it is definitely missing the "compare agencies" part for images not uploaded via their system.

The big problem is that many sites restrict scraping of data for security reasons, some have also CAPTCHAs (like Shutterstock oder 123rf) that prevents machines from gathering your information in the first place.

Robert

The problem as I see it with DepositPhotos is NOT the normal credit pricing BUT their offer to download images and pay by SMS for about 1 EURO (high resolution, no subcription attached). I tested that with Yuris images a while ago (http://www.alltageinesfotoproduzenten.de/2011/02/23/billig-billiger-depositphotos-warnung-an-fotografen/) and it worked. So maybe Yuri is getting a higher percentage in the back, but that doesn't stop this low pricing structure.

Yuri was informed by a fellow photographer via Facebook and responded, but no changes so far...

How far back is "a while ago"? Because (Im a designer) i have tried to get Yuri pics via SMS on DP and its not possible and it hasnt been for a while. That is, because he is platinum there and apparently platinum photographers are excluded from SMS. Again, i have found that out many month ago and asked DP why. So the "no changes so far" come across a bit strange...

@Gooner: My test was in the end of February and it still worked in March. Maybe he really managed to pull out his images of the SMS deal, BUT DepositPhotos does not mention anywhere that only some picture can be bought that way?

Seems like Siteboost 0.29b is not compatible with Firefox 5.01 or Firefox 6?
I guess I have to wait for an update then.

Thanks in advance... :-)

EDIT: 20.08.2011: Sorry, my mistake, I had Greasemonkey disabled. Now it works again... :-)

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia: New Subscription Commissions
« on: August 18, 2011, 05:52 »
Does anyone know how the vector downloads were compensated at the OLD pricing model?

The new one is 1 vector download treated like 1 photo download, right?

EDIT: Found it myself: OLD was 1 vector download equals 3 photo downloads.

Can one buy all the series of his cartoons and publish as a book, with a regular license?

To publish a book, you would need an Extended Licence, I suppose (like with calenders or posters for resale), but otherwise than that: Yes, you could make a book out of them.

It seems like the changes will go in effect when Fotolia releases their V3 version of the website. Until then they pay the old commissions. Might be a reason to hope it will take a while to V3 :-)

Ah, thanks. Instead of getting 34 or 39 Cent per Image Subscription Download, I now get only 33 Cent.

Can anyone compare OLD and NEW commissions? In the link it seems I see no difference to the current commissions.

As far as I have noticed, Pond5 and Revostock so far support video metadata that you easily insert like you apply photo metadata in the IPTC fields (I use Adobe Bridge, but Lightroom etc. should work as well) t has nothing to do with iSyndica.

I haven't found any of my images, but Yuri Arcur's images are credited as " media bakery" as well.

General Stock Discussion / Re: European trip
« on: May 28, 2011, 02:42 »
Let's put it this way: There are enough photographers living in every major European city who contribute to microstock sites. So it will be hard to find shoots that haven't been taken, but you sare can give it a try.

It's a nice idea!

However, I am activly blogging about microstock, so in your results many hits show my own blog pages or results of my microstock book. :-)

@Andrey:

I was willing to try your tool, but I got many error messages in the first place:

Quote
http://submit.shutterstock.com/stats.mhtml
Error: ShutterStock: Failed to fetch a page: System.Net.WebException: The operation has timed out
   at System.Net.HttpWebRequest.GetResponse()
   at MicrostockAnalytics.LogicBase.DownloadFile(String Url)
 Check your internet connection settings
Error: IStockPhoto: System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException: Year, Month, and Day parameters describe an un-representable DateTime.
   at System.DateTime.DateToTicks(Int32 year, Int32 month, Int32 day)
   at MicrostockAnalytics.LogicIStock.ProcessFile(Int32 FileId, String Html)

(this goes on for some pages)

In general the tool looks nice, but 50 dollar per month feels to much for me (I have more than 3000 files). The Photoshop comparison above says it all. A fixed price or a lower montly fee (e.g. 5-10 dollar) woul probably be more reasonable.
