Off Topic / Re: Message to all Russians in these forums
« on: March 04, 2022, 17:52 »
Dear Russian friends, I know there is a significant stock photographers community, so I have an appeal to you.

Please do not believe in your Russian media propaganda saying that terrible war is some kind of "special action". It is regular war against Ukrainian civils. Putin is cannon firing kindergartens, hospitals and civilian areas. Your Russian dictator is not better that Hitler or Kim Jong-un. He started the worst kind of war in the middle of Europe so no one can feel safe now.

I am asking you to inform and spread the true information wherever you can in your country. Putin already cut you off from most foreign media, so all ways to reach you are good.

Thanks!

BTW, I am not Ukrainian, but I have so much sympathy to their people that I had to post it, hope it won't be removed. If is reaches even one unaware Russian, my message makes sense. The only way to bring peace back to Europe is to make Russian aware and ready to avert from their ruler.

Dear users, do not believe this person and the lies he is spreading on this forum. He makes no sense, he has no proof, he is biased. The West is spreading lies, the same lies when they showing us pictures of dead bodies when coronavirus strike. Nobody is innocent in war. It's always two sides. But in this case, we can all see that West has gone too far.
The west is not spreading lies how can they fake news videos which are geolocated so proven to come from Ukraine. In any case the whole world thinks Putin is wrong killing civilians for NO reason how on earth can you agree with that?. COVID 19 was very real no way it could be faked.

The West is spreading lies. Are you blind or ignorant? Can you remember of weapon of mass destructions in Iraq? Google that. Can you remember bombing Yugoslavia? Let me help you: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legitimacy_of_the_NATO_bombing_of_Yugoslavia. Russian attempt to end the bombing was useless back then. More than 5.000 people died.

In any case, the whole world thinks what media wants you to think. There is no single evidence of Putin killing civilians. It's just childish. Covid was real but the media makes us sooo scare of that. Did you forget vaccines? Where is this deadly virus now?

Learn history and stop being ignorant.

This picture is a snapshot from the movie.
I an visually impaired NOT BLIND & Ignorant. Someone kick this insulting troll off the forum NOW!
Those things have nothing to do with Russia invading ukraine. Saddam Hussein was killing his own people and was also a dictator the west doesn't have dictators.
So whose bombing Ukrane then the fairy godmother? I bet you cannot answer that?
You are a nasty bitter troll calling someone blind & ignorant whom you don't even know. GET VA LIFE and I will report you to the moderator

Shutterstock.com / Re: Sale have stopped?
« on: March 04, 2022, 13:10 »
They have dropped for me like 60% compared to how it was a few months ago. I mean it wasnt like I swimming in success or anything but definitly feel that images that sold all the time suddenly stopped selling. While others have gained traction.

Anyways they reject half of everything so I guess theres hardly any new content for clients. I uploaded about 1000 images and around 300 videos and guess how many got accepted? around 300 photos and les than 10 videos.

Compare to Adobe stock they accepted around more than 500 photos and about 100 videos.
SSTK are in a real rejecting mood now. it was about one half rejected before then this week I had 14 out of 15 photos rejected & ere all accepted on DT, alamy & adobe.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Equipment you use
« on: February 23, 2022, 16:22 »
I looked at the website of the store Cameraland in Alkmaar, where I bought my camera and lenses. I would like to have this lens: https://www.cameraland.nl/sony-fe-600mm-f-4-0-g-master   :)
And then please with this camera: https://www.cameraland.nl/sony-a1-body

Maybe something for my next birthday. I'll ask my wife and kids about it.

Thijs, but for a gift of this magnitude you need a lot of kids. Good luck. ;)
Do you have an e mount or A mount Sony camera? I have a Sony nex 5n with kit lens & various 1980s vintage lenses incl olympus & pentax. and 3 ext. tubess for close up. Also have an A mount minolta 75-300 lens with an AF e-mount adapter.
I also have a Canon SX powershot superzoom which I mainly use for youtube video & ebay pics now. but I still got photos accepted when I started on SSTK over 2 years ago. I even used the canon when it was realy cold in UK a year ago & worked flawlessly. The Sony though kept reading camera error on the screen and didn't like the cold at all

Microstock will just get worse over the short term, commission rates will continue to be cut, maybe even stopped or put on hold as many of the sites will call it.

Shutterstock have shown the way on this with their January restart every year, I believe the overall outlook is very grim.

On the upside, in the long run, I believe that many countries, probably starting in Europe will look to bring in legislation to fairly compensate contributors, perhaps with a law that makes these companies responsible to all stake holders on a equal basis, when a company is sold, takes on debt, commission rates or terms and condition changes, basically all contributors having a equal vote at the shareholders annual meeting.

Perhaps they will bring in laws that state contributors/creatives are the ones who decide how much their work is charged out at, along with the commission rates.

As for the sites manipulating the search engines to favour the highest return for their shareholders this will also be outlawed.

As in the music industry, new technology has been used to scam artists in our sector of the creative arts, initially drawing in the talent and then after suckering them in, ripping them off.

The law and basic human rites are always slow to catch up with the 19th century mill owners, but it will come.

Or perhaps the advent of new technology will supersede microstock as we know it, like a search engine that seeks out individual websites of artist, photographers as a listing site, creating a market of independent online shops, which to a certain degree has been happening, maybe this will supersede microstock sites as we know them.

The other point I would make is, companies like Adobe have a vested interest in higher commission rates for us, as we buy their software, lets hope they hold their nerve, as many contributors (myself included) will only be uploading fresh content to them alone, ignoring SS/Getty and the other low hanging fruit, maybe 2022 could be a breakthrough year for Adobe.

I would suggest that if Adobe offered an exclusive contract, this could be a knock out blow for the likes of Getty and Shutterstock.

Personally, and I'm sure most people would like to see this, is Getty going bust and then wound down, with all the constituent parts sold off individually.

I also believe that there should be legislation on separating historic or commisioned photographs, art/illustation libraries from individual contributors portfolios on Microstock sites, companies should only be allowed to sell one or the other, or they should have the two types of content on totally separate sites.

Overall the outlook in the long term is better than in the short term.
Agree completely. Some of us actualy trained in this industry (or a related one) I trained in Graphic design back in the 1980s before everything went digital but when the internet got popular in the 2000s it became too difficult to earn a living at with websites like Fiver etc. I had to do another job but the horrible & rich new owners of the firm I worked for replaced my job & others with a machine. I then started photographing & selling things on Ebay, Amazon etc. but even that's declined in the last few years. It's much worse for me than most others because I have nystagmus in my eyes (limited eyesight) which naturaly limits the kind of work that I can do. (can't be a truck driver or plummer for instanse)
I could never have known back in the 80s that the internet was gonna be invented let alone how these websites would exploit others work. else I'd never have done art & photography..

Alamy.com / Re: Alamy sale for 7 cents
« on: February 22, 2022, 09:18 »
Following up my earlier posts...  it looks like Alamy has now closed my account, and it didn't take 45 days. I'm totally out of microstock and not looking back.

My final thought on microstock is that it was made possible by the web; but ultimately destroyed by it as well. The nature of web commerce allowed the market to be controlled by middlemen who added no value, and competed on nothing but price.

On to something new...
Yep summed it up realy and not just this industry. I used to sell a lot of 2nd hand items on ebay / amazon but they seem to have declined big time in the last few yrs.. I guess everyone's going to facebook marketplace to buy things even cheaper.

Good news for me at Alamy:
. I haven't sold anything under $5 gross yet.
. Received my first $50 from Alamy in October. (started in June 2020)
Bad news: Nothing sold after that
Your specialised macro shots probably are popular on alamy. One of the 3 sales I had so far on alamy was a extreme close up of a flower. I only have 900 photos on there though. I think you need way over 1k photos on there to get any real sales.

If I get any of those on alamy I'll leave straightaway & sent a letter to the D mail. if they don't reply it will be all over social media. I've only had 3 sales on there in 2 years anyway, grand total $4. I hear quite a few people are leaving there with the commission cut to 20% for low earners not suprised Daily mail are a shareholder because they are always criticize the poor yet help cut the money for them.

Adobe Stock / Re: Well done Adobe
« on: February 11, 2022, 13:29 »
If only Adobe took editorial video and photos directly from contributors I'd basically go all in and upload everything I have. We need a 3rd viable site, Pond5 and SSTK take editorial but that's it,...

123RF & DT also take editorial & make submission simple - you can choose to have images automatically considered for editorial if they fail commercial standards.  great as you don't have to play guessing games about what they'll consider editorial
Yes they are great because you dont waste your time and just submit it to editorial unlike SSTK who don't care about wasting your time.

Alamy.com / Re: Alamy sale for 7 cents
« on: January 14, 2022, 16:05 »
Ten sales today in China for 15c, all vectors, when I signed up to sell vectors on this site they assured me that they would sell for $30.00 each.

They have over the last five or so years renaged on this contract, dropping the price over and over again, tell they have reached rock bottom of 15c.

Alamy used to give it's profits to Charity, but since it has sold it's soul to PA Media Group (which really is the Daily Mail newspaper, owned by Viscount Rothermere a notorious tax avoiding family, he and his father have never paid any tax in the UK, his father was a well known supporter of Adolf Hitler). I write this, so you know the type of people and the context of the situation.

What is basically going on is exploitation, personally I'm never uploading to them again.

The Microstock market is a money grab by the wealthy, one has to ask one self, don't these people have enough already?

I'm moving in to different creative markets and leaving Microstock behind, after 12 years of designing, illustrating and photographing along with thousands of hours keywording and uploading, I will just leave my portfolios to run their course and then when they stop making money, I will delete them, with the exception of Adobe.

Anyone who is sane will do the same.
Well said. I'll think twice about staying with alamy with t''' s like that now owning it & they've halved the commission as well but for me it's 20% of nothing as i've only had 3 DLs there in 2 years.

Interesting portfolio https://www.shutterstock.com/g/pisanstock?sort=newest
I wonder how many of SS's photos are like that, shouldn't have been accepted. Not fair when you get decent colorful & maybe useful images rejected for noise or focus. here is an ex. of a photo rejected on SS. I even put motion blur keyword in but to no avail. https://www.dreamstime.com/people-fairground-night-riding-carousel-time-fair-park-boston-lincs-uk-oct-image233728080
Note: it was accepted on DT so the link is to there because the file was too big to upload here.

139
shutterstock no longer has the capacity to maintain the forum. It's all the more amazing how often they ask me to participate in the contributor survey. I get it at least once a week.

After months I uploaded an image again. It was rejected because of noise. With all other agencies the problem did not exist. But I don't care. If they don't want it, they don't want it. I do not make a second attempt.

I saw an ss blog and an example for noise they gave in a photo was the factory ceiling at 100% but I can't see it. https://www.shutterstock.com/blog/how-to-avoid-a-visual-noise-rejection
There may be color noise but I'm not sure. The other examples are easy to see though. I had to start shooting in RAW to get rid of this color noise but SS still rejected some of my pics for another type of noise or grain especially ones with trees or foliage. The same pics were accepted on adobe and they are pretty strict in what they accept.

Off Topic / Re: New Years topic
« on: January 08, 2022, 17:31 »
Same here: 2 DLs min cents for me this year on SS but I only have 660 photos on there. Alamy I have over 800 and ziltch sales for many months. I don't know what's going on there but just like SS they cut the royalties by a lot but only for $250 below earners. This makes it even harder for low earning people to get to that amount, Well Alamy was always a bit of an elitist agency.

141
My downloads at SS have declined alarmingly.
None of my best sellers have been sold yet.
My portfolie has been in weekend mode for 7 days.
Also at AS things are unexpectedly very bad.
Nothing is going on at P5 so far, but that's nothing new. I've always had very few DL there.

I guess there is the recession, economy, omicron, also in play and things are getting worse all the way down the line.

What recession? Canada is not in a recession at the moment. Neither is the US...

Depends on what industry you're in I guess, I am in Ontario and in Ontario and Quebec it's near impossible to find any job
Sorry for your troubles, but Canada is not in a recession and neither is your province.
Besides:
Employment in Ontario rose for the sixth consecutive month, bringing the province's unemployment rates back below pre-pandemic levels.
https://beta.ctvnews.ca/local/toronto/2021/12/3/1_5692371.html

Yep!, if you read the job reports in the media all through the pandemic you'd think it was the best of times here and the non-stop stories about the labour shortage and "employers can't find workers", I can start tomorrow, not looking for anything special and min wage is fine.  I've been looking for a year and looking and applying HARD since May because the writing was really on the wall for stock video and nothing yet.

If I have the time this weekend I need to deep dive into those stats and see who is actually hiring because just yesterday a company here laid off 5000 min wage workers.

It seems the same in my town which has been declining for years. ie shops boarded up outdoor market with less stalls but my country overall is not in recession. I watch someone's videos on YouTube where he looks inside large abandoned houses in Canada that had been empty for years. He never seems to run out of houses to explore. Maybe they were abandoned during a recession

Hi everyone. Any opinions on Wirestock?

https://www.wirestock.io/#howitworks

They seem to be the follow up of the group that wanted to start a blockchain linked agency.

https://www.microstockgroup.com/selling-direct/peer-to-peer-direct-stock-selling-platform/

Now they have opened a place that on the surface looks similar to blackboxglobal, they take 15% distribute to seven micros but also do your keywording and description (unless it is editorial).

For many part timers or newbies or people who are not good with English, this is certainly a very attractive idea.

makes more sense than a blockchain site IMO.

All content goes into a central port, juts like blackbox, not into your individual portfolios.

What I really don't like that nowhere on the site kann you find address, telephone number, bios of the team and managers.

But jjneff has looked at them, also brasilnut.

https://brutallyhonestmicrostock.com/2020/01/08/review-wirestock-stock-agency/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cClb-o5lQss&fbclid=IwAR3gzhzM4UBqgclksMj9Nm-_BjAYgYQ7bIotZTSwR6ICkHNjUS0I9yRqJ-c

I find it interesting enough to sign up.

But more info about the faces behind the service would make a huge difference.

Like Blackbox it will  be an additional place and not replace my main ports.

What is the minimum payment cash out on wirestock ?  I am thinking of uploading to wirestock after closing my Dreamtime & Alamy ports because it will take me maybe years to get to their minimum payouts due to low sales.

143
Shareholders need convincing the collection is growing faster than competing agencies. I wonder if they just accept this stuff then bury it from searches. Also wonder if/when shares eventually tank will SS face action  over this stuff (misleading shareholders)?

If you search, you will see more similars with him. https://www.shutterstock.com/nl/g/pisanstock?searchterm=flag+of+japanese.+The+rising+sun.&sort=popular   Not bad in quality, but I think if I uploaded them, a fair amount of these images would also be rejected as similar.
So much is uploaded and so much is rejected at Shutterstock, that there must be another reason. The shareholders mainly look at the profit and number of sales.

Omg those stripy patterns hurt my eyes and I'm an ex designer so why would anyone buy those?

144
Looks like a 3 year old got hold of a camera and pressed the shutter button multiple times.

https://www.shutterstock.com/g/CharoensilpPhotoData?sort=popular&page=10

Who would anyone take so many blurred photos and how on earth were they accepted when you get a tiny bit of a normal photo rejected if it's OOF? It's totally unfair to get those accepted.

145
I think the main stock sites need to explain to stingy buyers the advantages of paying for content instead of going to the freebies.

Shutterstock.com / Re: does SS do not like anymore new photos???
« on: December 18, 2021, 16:38 »
I always zoom in on my photos. If it's not quite sharp at 200%, I know I could have a problem.
Landscape photos without a foreground, where the foliage of trees is not sharp, is a problem.
Before shooting for Shutterstock, I thought I took nice photos, but almost all of them would be disapproved for sharpness.
Sometimes the question is whether that sharpness is necessary for certain photos, but that is the rule at Shutterstock.
Photos that are on the border are sometimes approved and rejected the other time. And sometimes, of course, photos completely unjustly rejected.
On the shutterstock forum. the rejected photos were often shown. Often it turned out to be justified according to the Shutterstock rules.
I found that educational. I rarely see pictures here. Just complaining doesn't help, of course.
I think a lot of the time people are shooting in camera jpeg photos only & not Raw then converting to jpg. on a RAW editor program. My brother who was a full time pro in the film era realised early on when he first started in stock photography (on Alamy, he won't do microstock) that his jpeg camera images weren't sharp enough so shot in RAW from then on

Shutterstock.com / Re: Focus Pocus?!
« on: December 18, 2021, 16:20 »
Almost every landscape photo that has trees with leaves is being rejected for focus (The main subject is out of focus or is not in focus due to camera shake). The other agencies have no issues with my photos. How is your experience?
Yep had exactly the same problem with tree photos yet DT Alamy & even adobe accepted them so I think ss don't want that subject and are too lazy to tell us the real reason

148
Shutterstock.com / Re: does SS do not like anymore new photos???
« on: December 18, 2021, 16:12 »
it was better last week, now this week everything gets declined again for crap reasons like noise.

I think I will just stop uploading with them, it is my main income agency with a 4 digit number every month but I cannot take this daily frustration anymore.
Wow you're lucky I only earn a few dollars per month on SS but it still much more than Alamy Abobe and DT but I only have a few 100 photos. I found out some time ago that if I clean up & downsize old pictures taken with my 10+ year old entry level Olympus & Samsung cameras they accept them on SS and one even sold 5 times despite being downsized just over 4mpix in size. It wasn't my idea but someone told me this method on the old ss forum.
Note: downsizing means that you can reduce noise & sharpen a photo from say 20 mpix to 10 or even smaller. useful for cheaper compact cams. If you have a DSLR or mirrorless & you shoot in jpeg in camera only & use a cheaper lens it can still sharpen up nicely. I started shooting in raw to get sharper cleaner photos but ss still rejected pictures with trees & foliage in so they can't be human reviewers.
