Looking at monthly income report of Steve from January 2023. He is making about $2900 with average 15.000 images.
Thats an RPI of 0,19.
I cannot even dream of getting anywhere near an RPI of 0,19.

52
Has Steve Heap ever visited this forum or via a username by any chance?

To cut a long story short, I think the credit goes to smartphones.
These gadgets are seriously good at producing a decent image as we all know.
I started out saying the blame goes to smartphones, but that is not accurate.
Smartphones are just another extension in our digital world.
I use mine and upload with it. I have about the same acceptance rate (95%) as
I do with my Z9 and Z7 II.
Which smartphone is that?
Absolutely, heck my current phone takes better pictures than my old d200 did, some of which which still gets daily sales. I may have to start playing around with my phone more.

ETA: sigh, now I have to figure out my phone....

Problem is, you have to photograph people doing different things, and most contributors cannot pay for models and get releases. I certainly have no money for that or the correct lighting equipment etc.

$19.95  for 1 DL on Alamy but that's the actual price not sure what I got after their commission because they reduced the royalty for some of us last year.
$15.47 on SS for 1 DL even counting multiple DLs. I've had 23 DLs for one photo on SS but sadly added since the 10-cent DLs came in and have only earned $4.57, pretty dire as the photo was pretty unique - nothing anywhere near as good on the site for the subject.

General Stock Discussion / Re: This month's sales
« on: February 04, 2023, 17:27 »
I am reading in a lot of places that Adobe had an usually good January, several producers reporting best January ever on Adobe.

Maybe the gen ai collection is bringing them a lot of attention and new customers.
Yep, same here. I had over 3 times as many DLs on SS than adobe but earnings on both were nearly the same. Best ever month on adobe. (with less than half the no. of photos in my port than SS)

57
From a high point in 2018 with SS I can now barely afford the electricity to turn on the PC to check my pathetic earnings with this crowd of "on trend" wankers  :(

In the meantime oringer lives the high life along with his parasitic modern day plantation owners  :(
Yes, I agree. Oringer used to be v helpful to contributors when SS started in 2003 but after ss went public in 2012, he became 'one of the pigs in the corporate trough'  People who say (a huge amount of) money will never change them is lying.

How will you know if you got paid from the fund?

Only 1400 of my images have ever made a sale. Just over 25%. You can look at  https://submit.shutterstock.com/earnings/top-performers?page=1&date_range=0&sort_direction=desc&per_page=100 that's 100 per page, and just count the pages times 100. That's your sold images.

What's your percentage? That will tell you if the problem isn't how many images, but what are they?

Good Luck finding what you are looking for and Happy Sales

It also depends on how long you've had the images in your port. The percentage of photos sold should in theary go up over the years

If microstock continues to pay peanuts, it will eventually cease to exist with fewer and fewer people wanting to replace their worn-out cameras and instead use smartphones. The agencies will have to lower their standards, especially adobe & SS

61
Sales for me on SS were higher than in 2021 but only because my port is still growing with less than 1000 images & reached level 2 by late summer. Dreamstime DLs suddenly stopped 2 months ago even though I keep uploading,
I joined Depositphotos last May but after a handful of DLs at the start they also stopped and had nothing for 4 months since. Alamy sales suddenly increased last summer (although they coincidently cut the commission then) But it could also be getting over the 1k barrier for photos in my port last yr.

Adobe Stock / Re: Adobe Rejects
« on: January 01, 2023, 04:51 »
It always seems to be rejections for quality issues nowadays and I am having to guess which but can sometimes find problems but not always. I don't go on adobe forums anymore because they ALWAYS side with adobe. The revewers are wrong on there sometimes because I had more than one image re-instated after rejection and it sold soon afterward. Also someone on the forum calls himself a hardware/soft engineer but why would that make him an expert? hell, I'm a trained G designer from the analog era before digital but adobe with their software & apple ruined it all for me I'm afraid.

64
would upscaling work for old 2mpix (1600x 1200) photos? because I have a lot of good photos taken in the early 2000s but they were taken on my old Nikon Coolpix & Olympus P&S cameras.

I just got an email from SS titled: Contributor earnings now reflect generative AI Here's the first paragraph of the email:

News for artist recognition in advanced technology worldwide, and news for Shutterstock contributors!
You will now accrue royalties when your IP is used in the training of AI-generative models or used for licensing of generative assets created using Shutterstocks software. Contributing artists can view their earnings in their account in the Earnings Summary 'By month' tab as 'Contributor fund.'

yes, I did find out that If your images are dark they often get rejected for quality issues so if I brighten it up and re-submit it then gets accepted. They even reject if they think the color balance is wrong but that is subjective at best.

And secondly, the fact that newer images don't seem to really get traction.
My better selling images are nearly all dating back from two years ago, and I'm a far better photographer now then I was two years ago. (to my own personal taste)
Same here on SSTK my photos keep selling from at least a year ago. New uploaded images still sell but not as much. There was a huge gap in my sales for 3 wks from Oct 4 to 24th. but it's now back to normal

There could be something wrong with my account but I didn't deactivate it. I'll have to search for my images & see if they turn up.

General Stock Discussion / No sales on Shutterstock lately
« on: October 18, 2022, 13:17 »
This is very unusual (even for me) but I've had no DLs at all on there since Oct 4th. Do you think the website was not functioning correctly of is it the beginning of the end for SS? I usualy have about 15 DLs a month

A.I. can't use images from microstock because they are watermarked it would have to use Google or PD images. Of course, google would find out that they're using said images and would probably buy them out.

I don't post much because I'm way too busy shooting pictures and doing searches.

Congratulations on your successes.
Well, you post here constantly, so you seem to have time. May I ask you  what medications you are taking? I would like to have the same stuff for a good and colorful world  8) ::)
Lol

I've had nearly 4x as many DL sales on SS than Al, AS, DT & DP put together over nearly 3 years. Although I joined some of these agencies many months later than SS, I've still had several times the no.of DLs per month on SS. Though I'm hopeful that the others will catch up because I have more images on each of them (bar AS) than SS.
However, the revenue I earned from the other four agencies is 84% of my SS total achieved with only 26% of my DLs. That said, I've only had one payout from AS but two from SS so far.

Dreamstime.com / Re: Closing account caution
« on: September 07, 2022, 02:58 »
If you close your contributor account on adobe stock they will pay you the remaining balance even if it hasn't reached the payout amount but they charge a few $ to cover the processing fee. Luckily I cashed out in the end at 25 (not $) after they paid me for free images. I wish Dreamstime would do the same because I've been adding images for over 2 years. but earned less than $20 even though I have over 1k in my port..

I would suggest istock because unless the pictures feature children or interiors, they'll all be accepted. Since they're old and you have nothing to lose, even 2 cents per picture would be better than zero.  And generally, there are at least a few pictures every month that make me a dollar or more. I put pretty much all my mobile phone pictures and old images that won't be accepted anywhere else on istock and they generally make me at least a 100-200 dollars a month.
Thanks, I wondered about istock.

Shutterstock.com / Re: SS strict rejection policy
« on: September 05, 2022, 08:32 »

When I downsize my images, as you guys said, most of them get accepted, but does that means that they will not be sold for an extended license and mostly at 10c?

That will completely depend on what the customer wants the image for, not necessarily the type of licence. If he wants to print it on a huge billboard in town, then, yes, small image size might keep him from buying the image. But if he wants to print it as a postcard, then the minimum size Shutterstock requires is more than enough. I guess in the end it's probably like this: Downsizing will not keep you from getting extended licence sales, but it will make the chance of it smaller as it does limit the possible usage of an image.
But, in the end, the one image you won't get an extended license sale for sure is the image that never got accepted, so I'd say it's better to have a downsized image accepted than not having it accepted at all.
I don't see many printed billboards anymore. They are mostly adverts on big LED flat screens and if you look at them closely you can see the dots that make up the image which means even a 4MP image would work fine with them.
