One of the main reasons that I work for myself is that my sanity is not for sale.

Also, keep in mind that you are NOT going to give the same level of service to a PITA that you will to a nice client, and you've created a scenario where someone may be out there talking about that poor service.

You aren't doing anyone favors working with people that you don't like.

It would still be a pretty simple matter to add a couple of lines of code to the script that deletes the files that makes it find the owner's account, grab the email address and send an email with the image name/number.

If you're running a site that size, writing that script shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

General Photography Discussion / Re: Grey Card Question?
« on: February 16, 2014, 11:45 »
I dont understand how you would use it to set exposure can someone explain that also?

  • Purchase a grey card similar to this one on eBay
  • Take a photo with it filling your frame in manual mode under the same light that you will be shooting in
  • View the histogram of your photo. All data on bottom histogram should fall in the center. (see attached photo of 5DII histogram)
  • Adjust exposure as necessary

All these years of buying and using Grey cards for white balance, and it's for exposure readings? Sorry but I must disagree.

I believe that people are saying that it's not only for white balance. When filming, I use my collapsible 18% grey card to set both white balance and exposure. Of course, I may need to fine-tune the exposure, but it gives me a very close starting point.

All of the data in your histogram should be bunched right up in the middle with 18% grey filling the frame completely.

Regarding white balance, I've used white, grey, and black to set white balance in the past and they have all worked. As JPSDK said, the only difference would be if you are using histogram of grey card photo for exposure purposes.

You may want to take a look at averaging your photos for noise removal. From what I've read, this is a very non-destructive method that produces excellent results.

If you are looking for photos that you can use in your app without paying and only providing a credit, you may want to check out www.sxc.hu. It might be just the thing for you.

Hi, although this topic wasn't active for some time, I was hoping to find some answers here from professionals.

I am working on a smartphone jigsaw puzzle app where users can put together a bunch of images. Therefore I was looking for suitable pictures out there. This is how I found PublicDomainPictures.net which was mentioned above.

It says the pictures found on that website are public domain and "free to use", even commercial, but I couldn't found any real disclaimer or licence text, so I am not sure about that.

What I want to do is to include some pictures into my app and to provide some more pictures that can be downloaded from a server from within that app, and those images can be used only inside the app then, as a jigsaw puzzle. Maximum resolution of an image would be 1024x1024 pixels.

So am I allowed to use those pictures or not? Credits would be given to each picture, of course.

As tab62 mentioned above, there are obviously also images there that are NOT "public domain". Or may I use them, as long as I do not require high resolution copies from them? That's quite confusing for non-photographers... :-(

Thanks for helping
Mike

Selling Stock Direct / Re: Blue host down again? Sick of it
« on: February 10, 2014, 14:31 »
can't do anything about bluehost..

but what I can do is recommend you godaddy web hosting..

I have been with them for 3 years now and it has been up almost %100 (I think my site was down for like an hour in 3 years and they gave me some store credits as an apology)

I have hosted my own sites since 2006 and used like 4 different companies.. I experienced major downtime issues on all of them apart from godaddy..

As a web developer, I REALLY don't like working on GoDaddy's servers. I love them for domain registration, but I always warn people away from their hosting because they make everything more difficult for a coder.

I've been saying it for months now. BlueHost, HostMonster, HostGator, all run on the same servers and all are garbage hosting companies. I really don't know why so many folks recommend them, other than because they're cheap. So I guess if you want cheap and unreliable, go with these companies.

Otherwise, avoid them.

I have over 150 domains hosted with HostGator and have VERY rare downtime. Also great customer service. That's why I recommend them.

Tyler, thanks for running the drawing in the first place and congrats to all of the winners!

chasing google algorithms will make you insane,,, trust me...

 :o

[sarcasm] What do you mean? They only change the algorithm about 500 times per year or 1.3698 times per day. That should be as easy as pie. [/sarcasm]

I don't know if it's done as much in photography, but in video people mix and match all of the time. In fact, one of my favorite lenses for my Canon bodies is an old Yashica 50mm f/1.4 that I picked up for under $100.

lucagavagna has got it spot on. One other thing to add is that the closer the mic is to the mouth of the person speaking, the less of the ambient (surrounding) noise you'll record.

Photography Equipment / Re: Advice on lenses

I have to give an enthusiastic +1 for KEH. I've purchased several things from them and have never had a problem. On the other hand, I've always read the listings carefully on eBay and have never had a problem with camera gear purchased there, either.

Also, I recommend the Tamron/Sigma/Tokina 3rd party lenses as a way to get the most bang for your buck. I have very little Canon glass and have never had trouble with rejections for anything other than my composition, LCV, etc.

"baddabing!!"

LOL! Now he is using his 'extended' lens on the particular dancer. Just hope he has a hood on it  ... ;)

I would strongly recommend an underwater housing! ;)

The real ,question is why did he do it for free? Is it really for free or is the "photography" free but any enlargements aren't? Unless its charity why on earth would someone really do it for free?

I've done many projects for free and will probably do many more. Those projects are usually something that mean a great deal to my. In this case, the chance to score with some sexy dancers probably means a lot to him!  :D :D

I've got a set of those cheap extension tubes. Did you pick up a macro focusing rail? If not, here's one for $11.65 USD with free shipping. It makes your life much easier!  :D

Computer Hardware / Re: Which PC or MAC would you buy "now"?

lb for lb MACs are at least twice the price - I'd prefer to spend on CPU and RAM than badges or complete non-essentials like SSDs.

I would hesitate to put SSDs into the non-essential category. The increase in performance is pretty amazing!

I realize that is will probably get me flamed, but if any of you that think that $200 is nothing, feel free to PM me for my PayPal address and you can each send me $200!  :D :D :D

I also had a RadioShack TRS80 color computer. I remember being SO excited when I soldered in my gigantic new 128KB chip and also when I was able to store programs on cassette!

Basic was great!

I had to add another vote to the PC/cost-effective camp. I agree that specs are MUCH more important than brand and if you're looking at specs only, PCs are so much less expensive than Macs. My build which cost ~$1,000USD is below:

AMD FX 8150 8-core processor @ 3.6GHz
Biostar TA970 motherboard
NVIDIA GeForce GT 630 w/ 4GB DDR3
32GB RAM
2x OCZ 240GB SSD
2x 2TB 7200RPM HDD
850watt modular power supply
Generic case w/ 6 fans
Window 7

I built this system to be able to handle Canon HDSLR video editing and it's been superb. I tried to price out a Mac with similar specs and the price that I came up with was about $3000 with only 16GB of RAM.

That extra $2000 could buy a nice lens! The other benefit is that I can easily upgrade my system when I need to. The motherboard supports up to 64GB of RAM, so I plan to increase that in the near future.
