Shutterstock.com / Re: Is Shutterstock dead?
« on: February 18, 2024, 12:10 »
For downloads, I'm tracking at about the same level as last year which isn't great because I added 30% to my portfolio since then. I would have hoped to have more downloads. Feels like I'm working hard to stand still.

However, for revenue, I'm doing a lot better than last year .. at  least so far.

Contact the auditors ... I believe it's PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Explain that you believe that SS may be defrauding suppliers/contributors and that this could be leading to a material misstatement of the financial statements. Obviously give sufficient detail to support your concerns.

You could also contact the SEC with your concerns and, if PwC ignore you, contact the PCAOB.

AS appreciably better than January 2023
- Download +88%
- Revenue +107%

SS marginally better than January 2023 for downloads but better for revenue
- Download +3.6%
- Revenue +57%

SS still better than AS for revenue but AS is catching up fast.

I do Adobe and Shutterstock.

As in previous years, SS is around 65% and AS around 35% of total revenue. We'll see if that changes in 2024.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Shutterstock "Contributor Fund"
« on: January 25, 2024, 11:59 »
Almost missed it, but I saw a small fee from the contributor fund yesterday. Not even half of what we got in 2023.

I got $1.40.

Off to buy the caviar and champagne in a few minutes.

The greediness of their management has no limit. So here are the consequences...and when the numbers talk all the rest does not matter.

Yeah, you can only screw people over so long before it catches up with you. By people I mean contributors - who they actually need to look after otherwise we go somewhere better, like Adobe stock. I have zero loyalty now towards S/S. Karma is a biatch.

It's business and loyalty doesn't come into it. I don't expect SS (or Adobe for that matter) to be loyal to me and I'm certainly not loyal to them. I will continue to contribute to SS just so long as it's is in my interests. If the terms or circumstances change so that it is no longer in my interests then I will walk away.

For 2023 .....

SS - Downloads +7.53%, Revenue +55.85%

AS - Downloads +29.17%, Revenue +52.36%

But ......

On SS, I increased the size of my portfolio by 32.18%. It feels like I'm uploading a lot of content for relatively little increase in downloads.

On AS, I increased the size of my portfolio by 26.71% so increase in downloads roughly matches increase in portfolio.

Nevertheless, increase in revenue on both SS and AS is very welcome and largely down to some pretty big sales during the year.

My expectation for 2024 is that AS revenue will continue to improve while SS revenue will probably stagnate or go down a bit.

My review backlog is slowly going down with the oldest in the queue having been waiting for just 18 days.

Shutterstock.com / Re: What a cool SS, how well he sells
« on: November 28, 2023, 07:46 »
every time i see one of these in this tread i think it's a plant.  so far this month i have a bunch of videos sold along with images on adobe totaling over $50 while SS hasn't cracked the $4 mark.  exactly 0 videos sold and a handful of dimes in image sales.  i would stop uploading if not for the keywording lookup that i then port over to other sites (though even that doesn't work as well as it used to).

Shutterstock is really beginning to struggle with both downloads and earnings. Even with a $123.90 sale earlier in November on Shutterstock, Adobe Stock is 21% ahead in earnings and 52% ahead in downloads.

I have the same experience with SS. I was doing great till the end of September. Then downloads and earnings suddenly declined significantly and that has been continued into November. Something has happened. Is it a major change to the algorithm or is it something else?

Fortunately, AS continues to sell although the review process remains painful.

Off Topic / Re: I will never use AI
« on: November 26, 2023, 13:35 »
I'm sure that AI has its place as do many other things. I see it as a tool - a bit like the increasingly sophisticated auto-focus systems on the latest cameras - rather than as something to replace my photography. As such, I have no interest in using AI to generate images.

So far, I haven't invested in some of the AI tools like Topaz because I really don't have a need for them. But I recognize that AI is going to creep into my daily life and, to an extent, it will be unavoidable. So to say that I'll never use AI is probably wrong.

I'm sure that AI will replace some aspects of photography. However, just as art survived photography so photography will survive AI.

Right now, my oldest is just 16 days. However, Adobe should beware ... the same image was accepted by Shutterstock next day and has already sold.

Other than that, some new material is getting accepted quickly on Adobe while other images are having to wait for weeks. Perhaps Adobe has their reasoning. If so, it would be nice of them to share it.

Is Shutterstock now "officially" accepting "ai" stuff, or was this just a regular photo? Thanks!

A "regular" photo. I don't do AI.

Personally, I have no interest in doing AI. I enjoy wandering around with my camera and shooting what catches my eye.

Sometimes I get to meet other photographers doing the same and we have a good chat.

Of course, stock isn't a major income stream for me so I get to pick and choose.

« on: November 15, 2023, 16:33 »
There was a very sharp decline in sales for me beginning of this month. Very unusual for this time of the year. Must be another search engine tweak or the cumulative effect of their clueless management

I have seen a sharp decline both this month and last month when compared to the rest of the year.

So far this month, Shutterstock sales are very slow. I'm at about 50% of the volume I would normally expect.

Adobe sales are normal.

I have three photos "Submitted 2 months ago" in the queue.

Is that "normal"?

My sales and revenue on SS have been increasing steadily as has the average rate per download which, this year, stands at $0.70. Yeah, I also get the $0.10 sales but they are in the minority and I've also had some big sales. In terms of total downloads and revenue, for me, SS continues to outperform Adobe. And my uploads are generally reviewed within 48 hours.

I'm now at over 6 weeks on some of my submissions. It's a joke.

Adobe Stock / Re: Big drop in sales
« on: September 17, 2023, 12:19 »
No AI images here either. Adobe Stock is my best performing agency this month and it is usually not due to just a smaller protfolio than the others.

Pond5 is a complete disaster for me with now over 2000 clips (and they are sell-able) now and not one sale this month so far even with hundreds of views. Shutterstock is performing poor so far this month too.

Shutterstock started slowly for me this month but last week was pretty good and made up for it. Adobe is on track to be a good month. Revenue on both is only average for the month although the bonus payment for the Adobe Firefly training helped.

I had two photos in my queue approved today. Strangely, they were not the oldest shots awaiting review. Those are still pending approximately 35 days in.

« on: September 15, 2023, 06:23 »
The Contributor Dashboard is working fine on my Mac but not on my phone. On my phone, neither the app nor the web site will load. I keep getting invalid password/userid even though I verified that I was using the right one.

Update: reset the password and everything is working now.

35 days right now - still not reviewed.

I'm over a month on some of mine.

Adobe Stock / Re: review times??
« on: September 06, 2023, 06:15 »
Im still not seeing this.  I'm getting maybe a 2-3 day time period for new images to be uploaded and its been like that for a while.
Last batch i submitted on the weekend have been reviewed sometime before now when i checked.

That said, for some reason, ive had 4 images stuck in the queue for 2 weeks now that havent budged but the other 150 or so went through.

You are lucky. My oldest batch of photos (not AI, real photos) has been sitting in review for 16 days now, still not reviewed. The batch after that has been sitting unreviewed for 10 days, another one for 9 days and so on...
The only photos that get reviewed faster for me are editorial ones.

I have a bunch of photos (also real) sitting in the queue at 25 days.
