Photo Critique / Re: Critique for iStock Submission Test

If I was a reviewer at Istock I would say no. I can clearly read and see the Nissan Icon which is not acceptable! Also is there really any money potential from your photo?

Wow, your photography is beautiful! I absolutely love some of your images. My favourites are:

Down Town San Diego
Ocean Sun Set
Bridge Across The Water

Have you submitted your photos to Istock yet?

I hope you get in ;)

What type of tennis balls are you using? And are they fresh? I would suggest altering the lighting or editing the tennis balls to make them stand out a little more and be a bit brighter. They dont look very fresh. You could also redo the image using new brighter balls which will give the same effect as the techniques stated above.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Do Effects Sell Well

I have two images in sepia that sell better than their originals. Also some images in which I applied a colorization do as well or better than their color counterparts. I agree that not all buyers are willing to edit anything, and that edited version may look just like he wants - either the color hue or the mood or the general look.

In fact I've seen few instances of my color photos in use with any effect of that sort. Cropping and resizing seem to be the most common editions.
Can you post me a link to your Sepia image?

Thanks Cobait and Madelaide! I am hoping to break even and shoot 50/50, half of what I like and the other half on what is going to sell.

Cobalt I think I'm going to need a lot more experience and skill to start producing high quality photos like my hot air balloon shot. I have a couple of beachside locations around me which I want to shoot, except I shall follow your guide and use a tripod.

Thanks to all the helpers ;)

Great photo, not a huge fan of the water bubbles though.

Hope it sells ;)

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Are Your Exclusive To Istock?
« on: July 15, 2011, 03:29 »
I don't know why you would think that. Since you can't get any benefit of exclusivity until you sell 250 or 500 images, or whatever the current target is,  why would you want to avoid getting paid by anybody else during the months or years it takes you work your way up to qualifying as an exclusive? If you submit everywhere to start with then at least you have an idea of whether or not your work sells at other sites and how much you would give up to get the extra benefits from exclusivity. It looks like a no-brainer to me.

Frankly, I can't see how exclusivity could be beneficial to anybody just starting out now.

PS: If your images aren't reckoned good enough for iS, there's not much chance of them getting into DT or SS and without top-tier agencies the earnings potential in this game is pretty poor.
Nonono, what I meant is I want to be able to get my photos non-exclusively into Istock prior to submitting to other agencies. I believe if I can make it there, I can make it on the others.

The truth hurts sometimes but you are not likely to be accepted by iStock if the samples you posted are considered your best.

If I were you, I'd try to get into agencies such as Dreamstime and Fotolia first because they will aceept individual images. Then if you learn from their rejections and improve your work and learn the essence about stock photos, you'll pass iStock's application one day if you survive the leanring process.
I want to try and pass Istocks entry exam before submitting to any other agency, if I can get into Istock, I believe the other agencies will be easier to pass there exams.

People and Lifestyles seem to be the current fad. Scenery will be effective as long as it is something that hasn't been submitted before, is technically correct and looks drop dead gorgeous.

Can anyone give me some more feedback on each of my images individually?

Thanks ;)

The girl or boy hiding round the curtain is nice, except Black and White doesn't sell as well as photos in there natural form. You can read my topic about photo effects for more info:

http://www.microstockgroup.com/general-stock-discussion/do-effects-sell-well/new/?topicseen

Mmmm, strawberries. I personally think the strawberry shot is amazing, but as mentioned earlier it has been done before.

As for the train tracks, personally it is my least favourite of the three. Not really any potential money wise and overall isn't a great shot...hope im not being to mean.

What microstock sites want is images that are going to sell and images that haven't been done before. If you can capture images that fit in with those categories your bound to do well.

Hope this helps ;)

You must face the fact that stock photo industry including micro has become a highly professional and competitive battlefield, you must strive to become a pro. If you only want to shoot what you like and get wows, you will be disappointed. I don't mean to discourage you, but your purple flower will not get accepted due to poor lighting, composition, lack of sharp focus and poor subject.
Understandable and fair. I wanted to see Susans portfolio to see what she is shooting and her image quality. Is anyone willing to show me their portfolio? And finally, who are some of the "giant" photographers in the industry apart from Yuri Arcurs?

So what are microstock agencies looking for? Is it fashion, models, objects? Can someone point me into the right direction towards what the agencies are looking for?

UPDATE: The link now leads to ImageShack where all images are in their original size.

That's the thing I hate! Microstock isn't about selling what you love to shoot, it's about selling what sells well and what the market wants.

My quality of images aren't worth being accepted, fair enough as they were taken with hobbyist equipment. I am currently also a hobbyist who would like to eventually start selling in the stock industry.

First off I think I have to generate at least 10 images that Istock will accept, from there I can only keep expanding my portfolio.

What was your opinions of the purple flower?

I shall put the images up now.

TIP:If your thinking about uploading to Microstock sites for the first time..Join Istockphoto first and keep at it until your accepted.Build a portfolio there and if the sales come, you will need no reason to venture outside IMO
True, I thinks it's best if I can get accepted into Istock before adventuring onto another agency. Thanks for that tip.

Photo Critique / My Style

Hi MSG,

I am pretty new and am hoping to be editing and releasing photos within the next 6 months. Currently I have just under 30 "decent" photos which I am considering to upload once I have captured another 20 or more.

I am also going to be buying Photoshop CS5 and Lightroom soon to help aid my photos. My current photo gallery has no computer editing and was taken with a Sony Cybershot Camera and my old Sony Ericsson Mobile.

Here are currently 12 photos from my current portfolio. All effects were done via the camera or phone.

http://imageshack.us/g/39/beachsepiawtmk.jpg/

All forms of critism is welcome, please keep in mind that I haven't had the chance to edit the photos. If you have any tips to help improve my photography skills, then please share. I am very interested in which agency(s) you think will best suite me?

Kind Regards
-Will Dutt

P.S.
Sorry for the disgusting watermarks, this free program I downloaded is rubbish!

Read this tutorial by Yuri Arcurs:

http://www.arcurs.com/microstock-agencies-an-overview-for-beginners

It contains common faults which lead to microstock agencies rejecting photos. I thought some of your rejected photos were quite nice.

Hope next time you get accepted.

Actually, I would like to have a peak at some of your shots as well.

If you post a couple of your best into the critique forum, some top contributors will be able to point you into the right direction like which agency would be most suited for your style etc.
Sure no worries. The watermarks on my photos are very bad, I used some free program which literally destroys the photos.

Of those, likely 10 will be accepted and will likely get lost in the crowd.  I certainly wouldn't expect to start today with pictures of buildings, expecting that to finance traveling the world.
Can I send you a PM with some of my work for you to criticise?

Don't plan on quick or lots of sales.  Everyone with a camera wants to license their 'landscape, building and animal' shots.  That's some of the most oversaturated stuff right there.
Quick sales is defiantly not what I am aiming to achieve. My microstock goals are:

To produce high quality images of things and places I want to shoot
To build up a large gallery/portfolio of my work
To develop a knowledge of how the industry works
And to earn enough allowing me to travel and take more wonderful shots.

Currently as we speak I have around 30-50 raw files that I am planning to submit in the future, many of which I already have plans for.

Eeep, using those stats your most likely to make a sale on 1 out of 100 photos that you upload. Profiting well from Alamy would really only pay off well if you sell a photo sized valued around $300. Still it maybe worth a shot ;)
